Tomato: nutrition per 100 g
Per 100 g, a ripe local tomato gives 20 kcal, 0.9 g protein, 2.7 g carbohydrate and 1.8 g fibre, according to IFCT 2017. It carries 27.5 mg vitamin C, 42 per cent of a woman's daily need, and 905 micrograms of beta-carotene, which ranks 1st of 31 vegetables. Hybrid tomatoes are close, with 25.3 mg vitamin C; unripe green tomatoes have less, 16.4 mg.
About tomato
Tomato reached India only a few centuries ago, yet it now underpins almost every gravy, dal and chutney in the country, and it is one of the most widely grown vegetables. IFCT 2017 records names in 17 languages: tamator in Hindi, pakke tamator in Punjabi, tameta in Gujarati, velvangi in Marathi, takkali pazham in Tamil and Malayalam, ramamulagakaya in Telugu, goore hannu in Kannada, bilati baigan in Odia, poka bilahi in Assamese and rowangun in Kashmiri.
The tables compare three forms. The ripe local tomato on this page has 20 kcal and 27.5 mg vitamin C per 100 g. The firm, uniform hybrid tomato sold in most cities is almost the same, at 19 kcal and 25.3 mg vitamin C. Green, unripe tomato, cooked into chutneys and pachadi in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, has 21 kcal and 16.4 mg vitamin C. Beyond gravies, tomato stars in South Indian rasam and thokku, Bengali tomato chutney with dates, Assamese masor tenga and Gujarati sev tameta nu shaak.
What tomato brings to a meal
- 01
Top vegetable for beta-carotene
Ripe local tomato carries 905 micrograms of beta-carotene per 100 g, 1st of 31 vegetables and 30th of 160 foods. Cooking tomatoes with a little oil, as in a tadka or gravy, helps the body absorb carotenoids.
- 02
Vitamin C, 8th of 36
With 27.5 mg vitamin C per 100 g, tomato gives a man 34 per cent of his daily need and a woman 42 per cent. Raw tomato in kachumber keeps all of it; long simmering keeps less.
- 03
Very light
At 20 kcal, 2.7 g carbohydrate and 93.6 g water per 100 g, tomato adds flavour, colour and acidity to a dish with almost no energy. Its natural sugars are 1.3 g per 100 g.
- 04
Some potassium
Each 100 g supplies 204 mg potassium and only 10 mg sodium. Tomato is low in protein, iron and calcium, so its role is flavour and vitamins rather than minerals.

Before you plan around it
A common Indian belief holds that tomato seeds cause kidney stones. Tomatoes are in fact low in oxalate, and most people who form stones do not need to avoid them or remove the seeds; anyone with a specific diagnosis should follow their doctor's advice. Tomatoes are acidic, and some people with acid reflux find that raw tomato or very sour tomato dishes worsen heartburn. Unripe green tomatoes contain tomatine, which is reduced by cooking, so eat them cooked in chutneys and curries rather than raw in large amounts.
Food composition is general information, not a diet plan. Anyone managing a medical condition should plan their diet with a doctor or a registered dietitian.
What people ask about tomato
Do tomato seeds cause kidney stones?
This is a common myth. Tomatoes are low in oxalate, the compound that forms most kidney stones, and there is no good evidence that tomato seeds cause them. People with recurrent stones should follow the diet their doctor or dietitian recommends.
Is tomato high in vitamin C?
Tomato is a moderate source. IFCT 2017 lists 27.5 mg vitamin C per 100 g of ripe local tomato, 8th of 36 vegetables. Because tomatoes are eaten so often, raw in salads and cooked in gravies, they contribute a fair share of many Indian diets' vitamin C.
Are local tomatoes better than hybrid tomatoes?
In IFCT 2017 they are very close: local ripe tomatoes have 27.5 mg vitamin C per 100 g and hybrids 25.3 mg, with similar calories. Local tomatoes are often softer, juicier and more sour, which many cooks prefer for rasam and chutney.
Is tomato good for weight loss?
Tomato is very low in energy, 20 kcal per 100 g, and adds flavour that makes vegetables and dals more satisfying. It suits a weight-loss diet. Rich tomato gravies with cream and butter are a different matter.
