02The number

What this figure covers

This is the raita most often sent out with biryani: chopped raw onion and tomato folded into beaten curd. The recipe uses 100 g of curd, 40 g of tomato and 35 g of onion, enough for one small bowl. That matches a single home helping fairly well, though the bowl placed in the middle of the table for everyone to dip into is several of these. A caterer's or restaurant's version may be thinned with water, which lowers the figure per bowl, or sweetened, which raises it.

Of the energy in the bowl, 47% is carbohydrate, 28% fat and 25% protein. The curd provides nearly all the protein and fat. Onion and tomato add a little carbohydrate, which is why this bowl has 12.6 g of it and comes out above a mint raita made from the same amount of curd, at 81 kcal. The 10.6 g of sugars in the bowl is what is naturally present in the curd and vegetables; the recipe adds none. This is the highest of the four raitas in the set, but the spread from lowest to highest is small enough to ignore when choosing between them.

03The recipe behind it

What goes into one serving

The recipe INDB analysed makes 1 bowl. These are its main ingredients; spices, salt and water are left out.

04What moves it

What changes the number

  • 01

    The chopped vegetables

At 40 g of tomato and 35 g of onion, the vegetables are a larger part of this raita than the cucumber or mint in others. They add a little energy and some fibre. Doubling them makes a chunkier bowl without doing much to the total.

  • 02

    Thick curd or thinned curd

Raita beaten with water or a splash of milk pours more easily and has fewer calories per bowl, because part of the bowl is water. One made from thick, creamy curd has more. The recipe assumes plain curd, 100 g of it.

  • 03

    Sugar and chaat masala

A pinch of sugar is a common restaurant habit. A full teaspoon adds about 16 kcal and takes the bowl to 121 kcal. Chaat masala and black salt add no energy but do add sodium.

  • 04

    Tempered versions

Some cooks pour a tadka of mustard seeds and curry leaves over onion tomato raita. A teaspoon of oil in that tempering makes the bowl 149 kcal, which is a large rise for a small side.

06On the plate

In a meal and in a day

A bowl of this raita takes up about 5% of a sedentary man's daily energy requirement and 6% of a woman's. Next to a plate of biryani or pulao that runs to several hundred calories, it is a small addition that supplies what the rice lacks: 6.6 g of protein, the calcium that curd brings and some raw vegetable. Three bowls over a long dinner come to 315 kcal and 19.8 g of protein, which is still less than a second plate of most rice dishes.

Ways to keep it lighter

  • Beat the curd smooth without adding sugar or cream.
  • Use more tomato and onion for a chunkier raita from the same curd.
  • Season with roasted cumin and coriander leaves and go lightly on salt and chaat masala.
  • Serve it plain, without a tempering of oil.
07Worth knowing

Before you rely on the number

Raw onion and tomato draw water out once they are salted, so this raita turns thin and sour if it stands. Mix it shortly before eating. The recipe is salted, and extra chaat masala or black salt adds to that. Anyone asked to restrict salt because of blood pressure should stay within the limit their doctor or dietitian has given, including what comes from sides like this.

Food composition is general information, not a diet plan. Anyone managing a medical condition should plan their diet with a doctor or a registered dietitian.

08Questions

Onion Tomato Raita: common questions

How many calories are in 2 bowls of onion tomato raita?

About 210 kcal, with 13.2 g of protein, 25.2 g of carbohydrate and 6.6 g of fat. Each bowl in that count holds 100 g of curd. A sweetened or tempered raita will be higher than this.

Does onion tomato raita have more calories than other raitas?

A little. In this recipe set it is 105 kcal a bowl, against 90 kcal for cucumber raita, 86 kcal for lauki raita and 81 kcal for mint raita. All four are made from 100 g of curd, so the gap comes only from the vegetables.

How much protein is in onion tomato raita?

About 6.6 g in a bowl, 25% of its energy. The curd supplies it. Eaten with a rice dish that is low in protein, a bowl of raita is one of the easier ways to add some to the meal.

Is onion tomato raita good for weight loss?

At 105 kcal a bowl with some protein, it is a sensible side, and it can stand in for richer accompaniments such as fried papad or a creamy gravy. It will not offset a large plate of biryani, though. What matters for weight is the meal and the day as a whole.
