Calories in Besan Chilla

One besan chilla has about 71 kcal, with 4.1 g of protein, 11 g of carbohydrate and 1.5 g of fat. The figure is from the Indian Nutrient Databank and describes a small chilla: one of 6 made from 100 g of gram flour, so about 17 g of besan each, cooked with barely any oil. A thicker, oilier chilla has more.

Of this energy, about 60% comes from carbohydrate, 18% from fat and 22% from protein.

1 besan chilla is about 3% of the daily energy requirement of a sedentary adult man and 4% of a sedentary adult woman's (ICMR-NIN, 2020).

These figures are from the Indian Nutrient Databank (INDB), which calculates each dish from a standard recipe using Indian food composition data. They describe that recipe and that serving: a larger portion, or more oil, ghee or sugar, gives more. Source: Vijayakumar A, Dubasi HB, Awasthi A, Jaacks LM. 02The number

What this figure covers

The recipe behind the figure mixes 100 g of gram flour with 30 g of onion and 25 g of tomato, and cooks the batter into 6 chillas using only 3/4 teaspoon of oil for the whole batch. The source does not fix the size of a chilla, so one serving here simply means one of those 6 portions, each holding about 17 g of besan. That is a thin, small chilla made on a pan that needs almost no fat. A home chilla poured from a full ladle and cooked in a teaspoon of oil is a different thing and will come out well above 71 kcal.

Carbohydrate supplies 60% of the energy, protein 22% and fat only 18%. That split is unusual for a breakfast cooked on a tawa, and it follows from the ingredients: besan is a pulse flour, so it brings more protein and fibre than wheat or rice flour does, and there is very little oil to dilute it. Each chilla also carries 2.2 g of fibre. The moment oil goes on the pan the picture shifts, because a single teaspoon of oil holds about 44 kcal, which is more than half of what the chilla itself contains.

03The recipe behind it

What goes into one serving

The recipe INDB analysed makes 6 chillas. These are its main ingredients; spices, salt and water are left out.

04What moves it

What changes the number

  • 01

    Oil on the pan

The recipe spreads 3/4 teaspoon of oil across 6 chillas. Cook each one in a full teaspoon instead and a chilla rises from 71 kcal to about 115 kcal; with a teaspoon of ghee it is about 116 kcal. On an ordinary tawa this is the largest single change.

  • 02

    How much batter in each

One chilla here holds about 17 g of besan. A chilla as wide as a dinner plate may use two or three times that batter, and its calories rise in step: 142 kcal for the batter of two small ones, 213 kcal for three.

  • 03

What is mixed into the batter

Onion and tomato add almost no energy, and the same goes for chopped coriander, spinach, methi or grated carrot. Stirring in grated paneer or cheese raises protein and fat together, and the calories with them.

  • 04

    The stuffing and the sides

A chilla folded around paneer, or eaten with butter, ketchup or a sweet chutney, is no longer the 71 kcal item. Green chutney and plain curd add little; anything richer needs to be counted in addition.

In a meal and in a day

Nobody eats one small chilla for breakfast. Three come to 213 kcal with 12.3 g of protein, and even that is a moderate meal: a single chilla is only about 3% of a sedentary man's daily energy requirement and 4% of a woman's. Among the 22 breakfast dishes in this set it is the third lightest, behind idli and rava idli, and it gives a good amount of protein for its calories. A bowl of curd or a glass of milk alongside rounds off the meal.

Ways to keep it lighter

  • Use a non-stick or well-seasoned tawa and wipe the oil on with a brush or half an onion.
  • Add grated vegetables or chopped greens to the batter for more bulk and fibre at almost no cost in calories.
  • Have two or three chillas with plain curd for protein and leave the butter off.
  • Fill it with crumbled paneer or sprouts on days when it has to serve as a full meal.
07Worth knowing

Before you rely on the number

The low figure depends on a recipe with almost no oil and a small ladle of batter, so do not carry 71 kcal over to a thick, well-oiled chilla from a stall or a restaurant. The batter is salted to taste, and salty chutneys or pickle add to it. Besan suits many eating plans, but people managing diabetes or kidney disease should take their portions from their doctor or dietitian.

Food composition is general information, not a diet plan. Anyone managing a medical condition should plan their diet with a doctor or a registered dietitian.

08Questions

Besan Chilla: common questions

How much protein is in one besan chilla?

About 4.1 g in a chilla made from 17 g of besan, which is 22% of its energy. Two give 8.2 g and three give 12.3 g. For a higher protein breakfast, add curd, paneer or a glass of milk to the plate; that works better than counting on the chillas alone.

How many calories are in 2 besan chillas?

Two chillas of this size have about 142 kcal, with 8.2 g of protein, 22 g of carbohydrate and 3 g of fat. That assumes the nearly oil-free recipe. If each chilla is cooked in a teaspoon of oil, count about 115 kcal for every one.

Is besan chilla good for weight loss?

It is a sensible choice: few calories per chilla, a useful amount of protein and fibre, and very little fat if the pan is lightly oiled. It stops being light when it is cooked in a lot of oil or stuffed with cheese. No single breakfast decides weight; the total eaten over the day does.

Besan chilla or moong dal chilla: which is lighter?

In this set a plain besan chilla has 71 kcal and 4.1 g of protein, while the moong dal chilla listed is a large stuffed one with 352 kcal and 15.9 g of protein. They are not the same size, so compare them by what goes into the batter and the filling, not by the name.
