Calories in Jowar Dosa

One jowar dosa has about 97 kcal, with 2.8 g of protein, 13.4 g of carbohydrate and 3.4 g of fat. The Indian Nutrient Databank figure is for a small dosa: the recipe makes 13 from 100 g of jowar, 80 g of rice and 88 g of urad dal, and cooks each with about 3/4 teaspoon of oil.

1 jowar dosa is about 5% of the daily energy requirement of a sedentary adult man and 6% of a sedentary adult woman's (ICMR-NIN, 2020).

These figures are from the Indian Nutrient Databank (INDB), which calculates each dish from a standard recipe using Indian food composition data. They describe that recipe and that serving: a larger portion, or more oil, ghee or sugar, gives more. Source: Vijayakumar A, Dubasi HB, Awasthi A, Jaacks LM. 02The number

What this figure covers

The recipe is a mixed batter, not a pure millet one. It soaks and grinds 100 g of jowar with 80 g of rice and 88 g of urad dal, ferments the batter and makes 13 dosas using 3 tablespoons of oil. One dosa therefore contains about 7.5 g of jowar, 6 g of rice and 6.5 g of dal, which is a small dosa, lighter in batter than a typical plain dosa. Most of the difference in calories between the two comes from that smaller size and not from the grain: jowar and rice are close in energy, weight for weight.

Carbohydrate supplies 56% of the energy, fat 32% and protein 12%. Nearly all the fat is the cooking oil, and on a dosa this small 3/4 teaspoon of oil is a large part of the total. The urad dal, which this recipe uses generously, supplies much of the protein. What jowar adds is not fewer calories but a whole grain in place of some polished rice, which is where part of the 1.8 g of fibre comes from.

03The recipe behind it

What goes into one serving

The recipe INDB analysed makes 13 dosas. These are its main ingredients; spices, salt and water are left out.

04What moves it

What changes the number

  • 01

    Oil for each dosa

Three tablespoons of oil across 13 dosas works out to about 3/4 teaspoon each, and fat supplies 32% of the energy as a result. One extra teaspoon of oil takes a dosa from 97 kcal to about 141 kcal, so a heavy hand at the tawa changes the count more than anything in the batter.

  • 02

    The ladle of batter

Each dosa here holds about 7.5 g of jowar, 6 g of rice and 6.5 g of urad dal. A full-sized dosa poured from a bigger ladle holds more of everything, and its calories rise in step.

  • 03

How much of the batter is jowar

This batter has 100 g of jowar to 80 g of rice and 88 g of urad dal. Raising the jowar and cutting the rice changes the fibre and the grain, but does little to the calories.

  • 04

    Whole jowar or jowar flour

Instant versions stir jowar flour with rice flour or suji and skip the dal and the fermentation. They cook faster but carry less protein than a batter with this much urad dal.

In a meal and in a day

Two jowar dosas come to 194 kcal and 5.6 g of protein, and three to 291 kcal and 8.4 g. A single dosa is about 5% of a sedentary man's daily energy requirement and 6% of a woman's, so most adults will want three with sambar for a proper breakfast. The plate still wants more protein and vegetables than the dosas themselves supply. A dal-rich sambar, a peanut chutney or a glass of buttermilk fills the gap.

Ways to keep it lighter

  • Spread the batter on a seasoned tawa with a brush of oil, well under 3/4 teaspoon.
  • Increase the jowar and reduce the rice in the batter for more whole grain at similar calories.
  • Keep the urad dal generous, because it does most of the work on protein.
  • Pair three small dosas with sambar instead of adding a fourth with chutney.
07Worth knowing

Before you rely on the number

Swapping rice for jowar does not by itself make a dosa low in calories. In this set of recipes the jowar dosa is 97 kcal and the plain dosa 138 kcal, but the jowar one is also the smaller of the two. Millets are a useful whole grain, yet portions count the same way. Anyone choosing millet dosas to manage diabetes should settle the number per meal with their doctor or dietitian.

Food composition is general information, not a diet plan. Anyone managing a medical condition should plan their diet with a doctor or a registered dietitian.

08Questions

Jowar Dosa: common questions

How many calories are in 2 jowar dosas?

Two jowar dosas of this size have about 194 kcal, with 5.6 g of protein, 26.8 g of carbohydrate and 6.8 g of fat. Each is a small dosa cooked in about 3/4 teaspoon of oil, so larger or oilier ones will be higher.

Is jowar dosa lower in calories than plain dosa?

Per dosa in these recipes, yes: 97 kcal against 138 kcal. But the jowar dosa is made from less batter, so the comparison is mostly one of size. Jowar and rice are similar in energy for the same weight. The real difference is that jowar is a whole grain.

How much protein is in a jowar dosa?

About 2.8 g in one and 8.4 g in three, or 12% of the energy. The urad dal in the batter contributes much of it. A plain dosa in the same group has 3.7 g, but it is a larger dosa.

Is jowar dosa good for weight loss?

It can help in the sense that a small, 97 kcal dosa made partly from whole grain is easy to fit into a controlled breakfast. It is not light because of the jowar, though; it is light because it is small and cooked with little oil. Total intake over the day is what moves body weight.
