Calories in Rajgira Ladoo
One rajgira ladoo has about 199 kcal, with 4.4 g of protein, 22.5 g of carbohydrate and 10 g of fat. The Indian Nutrient Databank recipe behind the figure puts 23 g of rajgira, 10 g of jaggery, 4.5 g of almonds and 6 ml of ghee into each ladoo. Light puffed-rajgira ladoos sold in packets are a different sweet.

These figures are from the Indian Nutrient Databank (INDB), which calculates each dish from a standard recipe using Indian food composition data. They describe that recipe and that serving: a larger portion, or more oil, ghee or sugar, gives more. Source: Vijayakumar A, Dubasi HB, Awasthi A, Jaacks LM. What this figure covers
The recipe is a ghee-bound ladoo, not the airy puffed-grain ball held together with jaggery syrup. It uses 232 g of rajgira, 47 g of almonds, 100 g of jaggery and 60 ml of ghee to make 10 ladoos. One ladoo therefore carries 23 g of amaranth, which is a solid amount of grain, plus 10 g of jaggery and 6 ml of ghee. That makes it a dense, fairly large ladoo, and explains why it is the heaviest of the five ladoos in this set and 8th from the lightest among all 20 sweets. A puffed-rajgira ladoo of the same diameter weighs far less and would not match these numbers.
Carbohydrate and fat supply 46% of the energy each, and protein 9%. Most of the carbohydrate is the starch of the grain; only 8.7 g is counted as sugars, the lowest sugar figure among the ladoos here apart from the atta ladoo. The fat comes from ghee and almonds. With 4.4 g of protein and 2.2 g of fibre it is more of a grain-based snack than most sweets. It remains an energy-dense food: grain, nuts, jaggery and ghee pressed into a ball.
What goes into one serving
The recipe INDB analysed makes 10 ladoos. These are its main ingredients; spices, salt and water are left out.
| Ingredient | In the recipe | In 1 rajgira ladoo |
|---|---|---|
| Amaranth seed (rajgira) | 232 g | 23 g |
| Almond | 47 g | 4.5 g |
| Jaggery | 100 g | 10 g |
| Ghee | 60 ml | 6 ml |
What changes the number
- 01
Puffed seeds or roasted flour
Puffed rajgira is mostly air, so a ladoo made by coating it in jaggery syrup is light. The recipe measured here packs 23 g of amaranth into each ladoo with ghee, and is far denser for the same size.
- 02
Ghee to bind
Each ladoo has 6 ml of ghee. Flour-based ladoos need fat to hold together, and a heavy hand shows: one extra teaspoon of ghee per ladoo brings it to about 244 kcal.
- 03
Jaggery quantity
At 10 g per ladoo this recipe is mildly sweet. Recipes for fasting days often use more jaggery or sugar to bind puffed seeds, which raises the sugar while lowering the fat.
- 04
Almonds and other nuts
The 4.5 g of almonds adds fat and a little protein. Swapping in peanuts, cashews or dry coconut, or adding more, changes the ladoo's fat more than its size suggests.

In a meal and in a day
One rajgira ladoo accounts for about 9% of a sedentary man's daily energy requirement and 12% of a woman's. Two come to 398 kcal with 8.8 g of protein, which is a small meal. Rajgira ladoos are popular on fasting days, when they may be one of only a few things eaten; in that setting one ladoo with a glass of milk or a bowl of curd is a fuller snack than two ladoos alone. On an ordinary day, half a ladoo, about 100 kcal, is plenty after a meal.
Ways to keep it lighter
- Make the puffed-rajgira version bound with a thin jaggery syrup, which needs no ghee.
- Roll smaller ladoos than the recipe's, so the batch gives more than 10.
- Roast the amaranth flour slowly so that it binds with less ghee.
- Pair one ladoo with milk or curd instead of eating a second.
Before you rely on the number
One ladoo is counted at 8.7 g of sugars and 10 g of fat, the fat coming from ghee, almonds and the grain itself. Rajgira is often sold with large health claims; what can be said from these figures is only that the ladoo has a little more protein than a besan or rava ladoo, at a higher calorie count. During a fast, people with diabetes or on regular medication should check with their doctor or dietitian about what and when to eat.
Food composition is general information, not a diet plan. Anyone managing a medical condition should plan their diet with a doctor or a registered dietitian.
Rajgira Ladoo: common questions
How many calories are in 2 rajgira ladoos?
Two ladoos of the size in this recipe have about 398 kcal, with 8.8 g of protein, 45 g of carbohydrate and 20 g of fat. Three come to 597 kcal. Packet ladoos made from puffed rajgira are lighter, so check the weight on the label.
Is rajgira ladoo good for weight loss?
This particular ladoo is the heaviest of the ladoos compared here at 199 kcal, so it is not a low-calorie choice. It does contain more grain and less sugar than most, which makes it a more substantial snack. One, counted as part of the day's food, is reasonable; weight depends on the total.
How much protein is in a rajgira ladoo?
About 4.4 g, the most among the ladoos in this set, coming from 23 g of amaranth and a few almonds. Protein is 9% of the energy, so the ladoo adds to the day's protein without being a main source of it.
Can rajgira ladoo be eaten during a fast?
Rajgira is one of the grains traditionally allowed on many fasting days, which is why this ladoo is common then. Nutritionally one ladoo gives 199 kcal, mostly from grain, ghee and jaggery. Customs differ between families, so follow your own, and plan the rest of the day's food around it.
