These figures are from the Indian Nutrient Databank (INDB), which calculates each dish from a standard recipe using Indian food composition data. They describe that recipe and that serving: a larger portion, or more oil, ghee or sugar, gives more. Source: Vijayakumar A, Dubasi HB, Awasthi A, Jaacks LM. 02The number

What this figure covers

This is a khoya-based nariyal barfi, not the simpler kind made from coconut and sugar alone. The recipe combines 50 g of coconut, 100 g of khoya, 50 g of castor sugar and 2 tablespoons of ghee and cuts the set slab into 4 pieces, so each piece has 12 g of coconut, 25 g of khoya and 12 g of sugar. That is a large, rich square, and a shop may cut its pieces larger still. It stands 10th of the 20 sweets from lightest to heaviest and is the heaviest single piece in the set: every sweet above it is a bowl or a whole kulfi.

Fat supplies 66% of the energy, carbohydrate 27% and protein 7%. Three fats stack up in one piece, 19.7 g in all: coconut, khoya and ghee. Each of the three is high in saturated fat. The sugar is moderate by the standards of Indian sweets, and the coconut contributes the 2 g of fibre. So the calorie load of this barfi is a matter of fat much more than of sweetness, which is the opposite of what most people assume about mithai.

03The recipe behind it

What goes into one serving

The recipe INDB analysed makes 4 pieces. These are its main ingredients; spices, salt and water are left out.

04What moves it

What changes the number

  • 01

    Khoya or no khoya

Each piece carries 25 g of khoya along with the ghee. Barfi made from coconut, sugar and a little milk has none of that concentrated dairy fat, so the plainer home-style version can come out lighter than this figure.

  • 02

    Fresh or desiccated coconut

Dried coconut is more concentrated than freshly grated coconut because the water is gone. The same spoonful is heavier on fat, and recipes that use it tend to add milk or condensed milk to bind.

  • 03

    The size of the square

The 265 kcal is for a slab cut into 4. The same mixture cut into smaller diamonds gives pieces that are each a fraction of this, and half a piece is about 132 kcal.

  • 04

    Sugar and condensed milk

Each piece holds 12 g of sugar. Condensed milk, a common shortcut, brings sugar and milk solids together and makes it hard to know how much sweetness went in.

06On the plate

In a meal and in a day

One piece is about 13% of a sedentary man's daily energy requirement and 16% of a woman's, which is the scale of a bowl of kheer and not of a small sweet. Two pieces come to 530 kcal with 39.4 g of fat. It makes sense to count a piece as the dessert for the day and not as a bite alongside others. Having it after a meal that was light on fried food and ghee keeps the day's fat in proportion. The 5 g of protein comes mostly from the khoya.

Ways to keep it lighter

  • Cut the slab into small diamonds so that one piece is a much smaller serving.
  • Make it with fresh coconut, sugar and a little milk, leaving out khoya and ghee.
  • Grease the tray with a thin film of ghee and add none to the mixture.
  • Keep it to one piece and skip other fried or creamy dishes at that meal.
07Worth knowing

Before you rely on the number

Fat is the number to know: 19.7 g in a single piece, 66% of its energy, and coconut, khoya and ghee are all rich in saturated fat. Sugars come to 17.9 g, which includes the milk sugar in khoya along with the 12 g added. A person who has been told to watch saturated fat for a heart condition or cholesterol should ask their doctor or dietitian about coconut-based sweets specifically, and should remember that a larger shop piece raises every figure.

Food composition is general information, not a diet plan. Anyone managing a medical condition should plan their diet with a doctor or a registered dietitian.

08Questions

Coconut Barfi: common questions

How many calories are in one nariyal barfi?

About 265 kcal for the piece in this recipe, which contains 12 g of coconut, 25 g of khoya and 12 g of sugar. Nariyal barfi made without khoya, or cut smaller, will be lower; the figure describes one rich, fairly large square.

How many calories are in 2 pieces of coconut barfi?

Two pieces have about 530 kcal, with 10 g of protein, 36.4 g of carbohydrate and 39.4 g of fat. Three pieces come to 795 kcal. These are large numbers for something eaten in a few bites, and they come mostly from fat.

Is coconut barfi higher in calories than milk barfi?

Yes. In this set a piece of coconut barfi has 265 kcal and a piece of milk barfi 178 kcal. The coconut recipe keeps the khoya and ghee of a milk barfi and adds coconut and more sugar on top.

Is coconut barfi good for weight loss?

It is one of the more energy-dense sweets here, with 66% of its 265 kcal from fat and little to make it filling. A half piece of about 132 kcal is the realistic portion for someone cutting down. No single sweet makes or breaks weight loss; the pattern across days does.
