Calories in Peanut Chikki

One piece of peanut chikki has about 79 kcal, with 1.7 g of protein, 11.7 g of carbohydrate and 2.7 g of fat. The Indian Nutrient Databank figure is for a small piece holding 6 g of peanuts and 12 g of jaggery, from a slab broken into 8. Thicker bars, or chikki with more peanuts than jaggery, have more.

These figures are from the Indian Nutrient Databank (INDB), which calculates each dish from a standard recipe using Indian food composition data. They describe that recipe and that serving: a larger portion, or more oil, ghee or sugar, gives more. Source: Vijayakumar A, Dubasi HB, Awasthi A, Jaacks LM. 02The number

What this figure covers

The recipe melts 100 g of jaggery, stirs in 50 g of roasted peanuts with half a teaspoon of ghee, rolls the mixture thin and breaks it into 8 pieces. One piece therefore has 6 g of peanuts and 12 g of jaggery, a thin square that weighs very little. This is why it is the lightest of the 20 sweets in the set. Two things should be kept in mind. A packet bar or a thick slab from a chikki shop is larger than this piece. And this recipe has more jaggery than peanuts, whereas many chikkis are packed with nuts and so carry more fat and protein in each piece.

Carbohydrate supplies 60% of the energy, fat 31% and protein 9%. Nearly all the carbohydrate is jaggery: 10.8 g of the 11.7 g is counted as sugars. The 2.7 g of fat is the peanut's own oil. With 6 g of peanuts in a piece, the protein is 1.7 g, the lowest of any sweet in the set. In this recipe, then, chikki is mainly a jaggery sweet with peanuts in it, not a peanut snack held together by a little jaggery.

03The recipe behind it

What goes into one serving

The recipe INDB analysed makes 8 pieces. These are its main ingredients; spices, salt and water are left out.

04What moves it

What changes the number

  • 01

    Peanut to jaggery ratio

The recipe uses 100 g of jaggery for 50 g of peanuts. A chikki made the other way round has less sugar and more fat and protein in each piece, and more calories for the same weight, because peanuts are more energy-dense than jaggery.

  • 02

Thickness and size of the piece

A slab rolled thin and broken into 8 gives small pieces. Thick bars and packet squares weigh more, so their calories are higher in proportion to their weight.

  • 03

    Jaggery, sugar or glucose syrup

Home chikki is set with jaggery. Many packaged ones use sugar or liquid glucose with or in place of it. The calories are similar; the label tells you which sweetener was used.

  • 04

    Ghee and other additions

Only half a teaspoon of ghee goes into the whole slab here, too little to register per piece. Sesame, cashew or dry coconut versions each have a different balance of fat and sugar.

In a meal and in a day

A thin piece of chikki is about 4% of a sedentary man's daily energy requirement and 5% of a woman's, the smallest share of any sweet in the set. Two pieces are 158 kcal and three are 237 kcal, with 5.1 g of protein in the three. Chikki is hard, sweet and easy to keep eating, and a packet rarely stops at one piece. As a winter snack after lunch or on a journey, a piece or two is a small amount of energy. It is not a protein snack in this form; a handful of plain roasted peanuts does that job with no added sugar.

Ways to keep it lighter

  • Break the slab into small pieces before storing, so one piece stays one piece.
  • Make it with more peanuts and less jaggery for less sugar in each bite, accepting that the calories will not fall.
  • Buy thin chikki, not thick bars, and check the weight per piece on the packet.
  • Have plain roasted peanuts on days when the aim is a snack and not a sweet.
07Worth knowing

Before you rely on the number

The figure to notice is sugar: 10.8 g of sugars in a 79 kcal piece, against 2.7 g of fat. Chikki is sticky and hard, which matters for teeth and for anyone with dental work. Peanuts are a common allergen, so it should not be handed to children whose allergy status is unknown. People with diabetes should check with their doctor or dietitian, since jaggery raises blood sugar as sugar does.

Food composition is general information, not a diet plan. Anyone managing a medical condition should plan their diet with a doctor or a registered dietitian.

08Questions

Peanut Chikki: common questions

How many calories are in 2 pieces of peanut chikki?

Two pieces of the size in this recipe have about 158 kcal, with 3.4 g of protein, 23.4 g of carbohydrate and 5.4 g of fat. A thick bar from a packet is heavier than these pieces, so go by the weight printed on the label.

Is peanut chikki good for weight loss?

One thin piece at 79 kcal is easy to fit in. The trouble is that 60% of its energy is carbohydrate from jaggery and it does little for hunger, so the second and third piece follow quickly. Portioning it out beforehand works better than relying on restraint. Weight follows the day's total intake.

How much protein is in peanut chikki?

About 1.7 g in a piece, because the piece contains only 6 g of peanuts. Three pieces give 5.1 g along with 237 kcal. For protein, plain roasted peanuts or chana are the better choice; chikki is best counted as a sweet.

Is peanut chikki better than a ladoo?

It is lighter per piece in this set: 79 kcal against 109 kcal for a til ladoo and 168 kcal for a besan ladoo. That is mostly because the piece is small. It also has less protein than either, 1.7 g against 2.9 g and 3.1 g, so lighter is the accurate word, not better.
