What are the main ways to study nutrition in Delhi?

Three routes, leading to different jobs. A university degree, usually a four-year BSc in home science or food technology followed by a two-year MSc in food and nutrition, is the route into clinical and government work. A one-year postgraduate diploma in dietetics suits a graduate who already holds the right subjects and wants a focused year that includes hospital training. An online skill qualification or short course suits people studying around work or family, and leads to coaching, wellness, fitness and education roles rather than clinical posts. Which Delhi colleges teach food and nutrition?

Four verified examples, and the list is not complete. Lady Irwin College, a University of Delhi women's college on Sikandra Road, runs a four-year BSc in Home Science, a two-year MSc in Food and Nutrition with specialisations in Clinical Nutrition, Public Health Nutrition and Food Science and Processing, and a one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition that includes a three-month internship in a hospital dietetics department. Its 2025-26 prospectus lists 28 MSc seats and 47 diploma seats, while noting that seat numbers may vary. Its food and nutrition department dates from 1958.

The Institute of Home Economics, also a University of Delhi women's college, in Hauz Khas Enclave, teaches the same MSc in Food and Nutrition across the same three specialisations, four-year BSc programmes in home science and food technology, and its own postgraduate diploma in dietetics and public health nutrition. Jamia Hamdard runs a two-year master's in nutrition and dietetics with an intake of 30, open to graduates in home science, nutrition, the life sciences, nursing and AYUSH systems with at least 50 per cent, and names hospitals including Max, Lok Nayak and Holy Family for training. IGNOU, headquartered at Maidan Garhi, offers a distance Diploma in Nutrition and Health Education and an MSc in Food and Nutrition by open learning. How do you get into a Delhi University nutrition programme?

Through CUET for the degrees, and through the colleges themselves for the diploma. The BSc programmes admit on CUET (UG) scores. The MSc in Food and Nutrition admits on CUET (PG), and the 2025-26 rules ask for a bachelor's degree in home science, food and nutrition or nutrition and dietetics, or the postgraduate diploma, with at least 50 per cent in aggregate (45 per cent for SC, ST and PwBD candidates). The one-year diploma does not use CUET: Lady Irwin selects on graduation marks, asking for at least 55 per cent overall and 50 per cent in four listed nutrition subjects, and published its first 2025-26 merit list in August 2025. What does the Registered Dietitian route look like from Delhi?

Degrees first, then a hospital internship and an exam, and Delhi is well placed for the internship. The Indian Dietetic Association requires a full-time graduation and a postgraduate diploma or MSc in foods and nutrition, clinical nutrition or dietetics, the postgraduate step being allowed by distance education, followed by six months of continuous internship in a hospital recognised for RD training, with life membership taken before the internship starts. Its published list of recognised hospitals names twelve under Delhi and NCR, among them Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Max Healthcare in Saket, Medanta in Gurugram and Fortis Memorial Research Institute. One caution on distance study: IGNOU states on its own programme page that its MSc in Food and Nutrition is not approved by the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions, which now governs registration in this profession under the 2021 Act. What does a Delhi government dietitian post ask for?

A degree route, stated precisely in the advertisement. The Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board's advertisement 05/2024 offered seven Dietician posts with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, asking for a master's in home science with a food and nutrition specialisation, or a BSc in home science with nutrition plus a postgraduate diploma in dietetics and a year's practical experience, at pay Level 7. That was a 2024 notice, not an open vacancy, but it shows what government posts in the city ask for by name, and why a skill certificate alone does not reach them. Can you study nutrition online from Delhi and still get a recognised award?

It can, provided the awarding body is one you can look up yourself. NNWA's Diploma in Nutrition, Dietetics and Public Health and its other flagship programmes carry an award from Medhavi Skills University, Sikkim, a section 2(f) university that NCVET has approved as an awarding body; the affiliation page gives the partnership details. Be clear about what that is: a skill qualification at NCrF Level 4, which is neither a Delhi University degree nor the PGDDPHN, and which does not lead to RD eligibility. NNWA has no Delhi office. Delhi's food, and why a course should use it

A plan that a Delhi household will follow is built on wheat rotis, dal, rajma and chole, paneer and curd, seasonal sabzi, a long winter of ghee-rich food and an outside-food habit that runs from chaat to office canteens. A course worth paying for makes you practise on that plate: adjusting portions and cooking methods, swapping rather than banning, and planning around fasts, weddings and festival sweets. Which options suit working professionals across the NCR?

Anything with fixed live slots outside office hours and recordings for what you miss. A full-time University of Delhi programme rarely fits around a job, and a daily commute from Gurugram, Noida or Faridabad to a college in South or Central Delhi adds hours. In what order should a Delhi learner decide?

Work back from the job. First, name the work you want in two years: hospital dietetics, a government post, coaching, fitness support, school or community education, or food industry roles. Second, match it to a route: the BSc and MSc for clinical and government work, the diploma if you already hold the right degree, an online programme for coaching and wellness. Third, shortlist two or three options on that route only. Fourth, read each one's current notice for eligibility, seats, dates and fees on its own website. Only then compare price, because a cheaper course on the wrong route is the expensive choice.

Who should look elsewhere than an online certificate

Anyone who wants a hospital dietitian post, a government dietitian vacancy, research or the Registered Dietitian title should apply to a university programme, not to NNWA or any online certificate. A school leaver with science who can study full time should look at the BSc programmes first. A graduate with the right nutrition subjects may get further, faster, from a one-year diploma that includes hospital training. NNWA says plainly that its qualifications are not degrees and do not treat disease, and a reader who needs those things should take that at face value.

Which dietitian course can you take in Delhi?

The dietitian course most Delhi students take is a University of Delhi degree: a four-year BSc in Home Science, then either the two-year MSc in Food and Nutrition or the one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition. Lady Irwin College and the Institute of Home Economics, both women's colleges, teach all three. Jamia Hamdard runs a separate two-year master's in nutrition and dietetics that is open to a wider range of graduates.

Notice that the diploma is the one programme here that skips CUET, which makes it the quicker second step for someone who already holds a nutrition or home science BSc.
