NNWA publishes the name and qualifications of everyone who writes and checks its material. You can see the full teaching team on the faculty page.

The site's page on becoming a public health nutritionist describes that job and its employers, and the page on government nutrition jobs covers recruitment. This page does one narrower thing: it sets the MPH and dietetics routes against each other, entry clause by entry clause. For the dietitian routes alone, see the dietitian course comparison. NNWA runs no MPH and no dietetics degree, as its own section below makes plain.
The routes side by side, from each institute's own document
These are examples, not a ranking, and each row states what the institute's own document says. All were opened on 1 November 2026, and their dates differ, so the first column gives each one. An AIIMS Rishikesh notice invites applications for a January 2027 session, but its prospectus could not be found for this page, so that row rests on the January 2026 edition. Read the second column first, since it decides whether you can apply at all.
| Route and document | Who may apply, as published | Length | Selection and seats stated |
|---|---|---|---|
| MPH, AIIMS Rishikesh (January 2026 prospectus) | MBBS, BDS or AYUSH degree | 2 years, full time | 200-mark written test, then departmental assessment; 8 seats plus 2 in-service |
| MPH, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute (July 2026 prospectus) | Medical, dental, AYUSH, BTech and listed four-year health degrees, or a postgraduate degree in a listed subject, including Nutrition | 24 months, residential | Written test, interview and experience, 70:20:10; 25 + 3 seats |
| MPH, IIPH Gandhinagar (handbook updated July 2024) | Bachelor's degree in any discipline, with at least 50 per cent | 4 semesters over 2 years | Screening test, interview and academic record; seats not in the handbook |
| MPH in Public Health Nutrition, IIPH Gandhinagar (programme page and July 2024 handbook) | Health graduates, and life science, home science with food and nutrition as a major, dietetics, food science, or food and nutrition | 2 years, full time | As above |
| MSc Food and Nutrition, with a Public Health Nutrition specialisation, Lady Irwin College (2025-26 prospectus) | Home Science, Food and Nutrition, or Nutrition and Dietetics, with listed papers, or its PG diploma | 4 semesters | Merit on the CUET (PG) score |
| PG Diploma in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition, Lady Irwin College (2025-26 prospectus) | Home Science, Food Technology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Nursing, MBBS or Life Sciences, with marks in listed subjects | 1 year | Merit by marks category; 47 seats |
What is the real difference between public health and dietetics?
The unit of work: public health looks after a population, and dietetics looks after a patient. IIPH Gandhinagar's programme page groups its nutrition MPH under epidemiology, biostatistics and data analytics, nutritional assessment and population health, health systems and policy, and monitoring and evaluation. Those are skills for asking why a programme reaches some families and not others. A dietitian's training points instead to one person's diagnosis, reports and medicines, and to what that person can safely eat at the next meal.
So the working week differs. A public health role means surveys, indicators, training frontline workers, review meetings and reports, and a programme cycle may run for years before you can tell whether it worked. A dietetics role means ward rounds or clinic slots and feedback within days. Neither is the more serious choice. The difficulty for many readers is that nutrition appears in both, so it can look as though the two degrees are one field at different levels. They are not.
Can a nutrition graduate get into an MPH?
Sometimes, and it depends wholly on the institute, so you must read each clause before applying. The AIIMS Rishikesh prospectus for January 2026 lists only MBBS, BDS and AYUSH degrees, so a BSc in nutrition does not meet it. Sree Chitra Tirunal's July 2026 prospectus does not list a nutrition bachelor's, but it does accept a postgraduate degree in Nutrition. For a dietetics graduate that means a master's first, and the MPH later. IIPH Gandhinagar's handbook is the most open of these.
Some public health programmes are not for new graduates at all. The National Institute of Epidemiology's MPH page asks for an MBBS and three years of experience in public health activities. Selection differs too. IIPH Gandhinagar's admission page weights a screening test at 40, an interview at 50 and academic performance at 10, and says final-year students may apply. AIIMS Rishikesh's January 2026 prospectus describes a 200-mark written paper and then a departmental assessment. Do not assume that a strong BSc result alone will carry you.
Experience can also count, and not always the way you would expect. Sree Chitra Tirunal gives written test, interview and experience marks in the ratio 70:20:10, and says clinical experience without public health activities or administrative tasks will not count as relevant. If you have spent a year in a hospital diet kitchen, that clause matters. The same institute caps age at 40 as on 1 July 2026, with relaxations stated, so older career changers should read the limit before starting an application.
Does an MPH lead to Registered Dietitian status?
On the published list, no. Registered Dietitian (RD) is a credential of the Indian Dietetic Association, not a government licence, and its eligibility page names a postgraduate diploma in food, nutrition and dietetics or an MSc in foods and nutrition, clinical nutrition or dietetics. An MPH is not named. The page also asks for a qualifying graduate degree, life membership and a six-month internship at a hospital recognised for RD training. The full RD route is explained elsewhere on the site.
The point to take away is about order. If there is a real chance you will want to plan diets for patients, build the dietetics qualifications first, because only doctors and qualified dietitians may treat disease through diet, and an MPH will not bring you there. You can add public health later, if the clause allows. To weigh up the postgraduate stage, read how an MSc compares with a PG diploma, and if your interest is clinical, the guide to clinical nutrition and dietetics courses.
Public health nutrition sits between the two
If you are torn, this middle path deserves a proper look, because several institutes treat it as its own subject. Lady Irwin College's Food and Nutrition department offers its MSc in three specialisations: Clinical Nutrition, Public Health Nutrition, and Food Science and Processing. It also runs a one-year PG Diploma in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition, whose very name joins the two. IIPH Gandhinagar's nutrition MPH comes from the opposite side, starting from public health and adding nutrition.
There is also an online option for people who cannot leave a job. The Public Health Foundation of India's distance learning site lists a one-year ePost Graduate programme in Public Health Nutrition, open to graduates in all disciplines and delivered online. Its page does not state what award it confers, so ask before you pay, and do not assume it stands in for an MSc on a job clause. The MSc Food and Nutrition against MSc Clinical Nutrition comparison reads several syllabi if you want the master's.
Which route leads to government programme work?
Public health and public health nutrition lead there more directly, though the exact requirement sits in each advertisement rather than in any general rule. IIPH Gandhinagar names roles such as nutrition programme managers, public health nutritionists, monitoring and evaluation specialists, researchers and consultants, and says its alumni work with organisations including UNICEF, WHO and WFP. That is the institute's own statement. It tells you where the training points, and it does not promise you a post.
Dietetics does reach government settings too, mainly through hospitals. Some programmes need both skills: Himachal Pradesh's National Health Mission page describes nutrition rehabilitation centres that give children with acute malnutrition institutional care, nutritional support and family education. Before you decide, take your target state or agency and read two current advertisements, then compare the qualification lines. The site's government jobs page explains where they appear, and which posts are contractual.
Test the decision before you apply
Answer the one-or-many question
Write down whether you want to see one person improve within weeks, or a population shift over years. If you cannot choose, keep public health nutrition on your list.
Check your degree against three clauses
Open the current prospectus of three institutes and find your degree in each. Write yes or no beside each one, with the year of the document.
Read two real advertisements
Find the posts you would want in five years and copy their qualification and experience lines. Those lines, not course brochures, set your target.
Talk to one person from each side
Ask a hospital dietitian and a programme officer to describe last Tuesday. Notice which day you would want to repeat.
Fix the order
If patient work is possible, do the dietetics qualifications first. If population work is certain, go to the MPH or public health nutrition route your degree allows.
The question that decides it
Ask yourself what you would count as a good year. If it is ten clients who now manage their diabetes with their doctors, you are describing dietetics. If it is a district where more adolescent girls receive and take their iron tablets, you are describing public health. Everything else, the entrance tests, the fieldwork, the reports and the hospital rota, follows from that answer. Be honest about the parts you would dislike, too, because each route has a dull half you would have to live with every week.
Who does public health suit?
It suits someone comfortable with data, patient about slow results, and willing to travel, often in difficult conditions. It suits doctors, nurses and social scientists moving towards programmes, and nutrition postgraduates who keep asking why the same problems recur across a whole community. It also suits people who enjoy writing reports that someone will act on. It tends to frustrate anyone who needs to see one person's progress in order to feel the work matters.
Who does nutrition and dietetics suit?
It suits someone who likes clinical detail and people, and who is prepared for a long qualification ladder if hospitals are the aim. For that aim, read the degree guide first, since the bachelor's decides much of what follows. A nutrition qualification without the clinical steps suits coaching healthy adults, and a certificate or diploma holder in that role refers medical cases to doctors and dietitians. It is a good fit if you want a one-to-one relationship and quicker feedback.
Who should look elsewhere?
If what draws you is food itself, its safety and its processing, then neither route fits, and the page on food science and nutrition courses will serve you better. If you want hospital authority over treatment, medicine is the real answer to that wish, not an MPH. And if you have no degree at all yet, leave the MPH aside for now, since all the clauses above start from a bachelor's or higher, and choose your first degree with those clauses in mind.
NNWA on the same test
The name can mislead, so here is what NNWA's courses are. Its Diploma in Nutrition, Dietetics and Public Health includes public health in its title and teaches it, but it is not an MPH and not a degree. It is a 600-hour qualification at NCrF and NSQF Level 4 for Class 12 leavers of any stream. The Post Graduation Diploma takes a degree in any discipline. Both are awarded with Medhavi Skills University, Sikkim, recognised under section 2(f) of the UGC Act and an NCVET-approved awarding body.
The five-week Public Health Nutrition short course carries NNWA's own certificate only, and the university award does not cover it. NNWA teaches all of these online with live classes in English and Hindi. None of them meets a job clause that names an MSc or an MPH, leads to the RD exam or allows anyone to treat disease. If a post you want names one of those, apply for that. NNWA's courses can suit field and community roles that ask for skills rather than a master's.
Your next step, by situation
If you are a doctor, dentist or AYUSH graduate drawn to programmes, shortlist MPH prospectuses now. If you hold a nutrition or home science bachelor's and want population work, apply to the public health nutrition routes that name your degree, or take an MSc first where an MPH asks for one. If you want patients, stay on the dietetics ladder. If you are in Class 12, choose a nutrition or life science degree and leave this decision for three years, since you do not need to make it today.
If you cannot meet any clause this year, buy nothing to fill the gap until you have read what the next cycle asks. Volunteering or field work with a community nutrition project will tell you more than a brochure. If you are working in the field already and want applied knowledge, or have a degree in another subject and want to know what a skill course can and cannot do, NNWA's counsellors can talk it through on the admissions page.
