NNWA publishes the name and qualifications of everyone who writes and checks its material. You can see the full teaching team on the faculty page.

This page sets the two side by side and shows how to decide. The wider picture of first degrees is in which degree is best for nutrition, and the choice among dietitian routes is in the dietitian course comparison. If your actual question is about the mandatory training for food businesses, read FoSTaC against a food science course instead, because that ground is not repeated here. NNWA has one short course on each side and no degree on either.
The two subjects side by side
Each entry quotes one institution as an example of what that kind of course looks like, not as a national rule or a ranking. Entry rules differ by university, and every document has its own date. All were opened on 1 November 2026. Read down one column and ask whether you can picture a working week inside it, because the courses differ in ways that do not show on a brochure's front page.
| Point of comparison | Food science or technology | Nutrition or dietetics |
|---|---|---|

What does a food science course study that a nutrition course does not?
It studies what happens to the food itself, from raw material to packet, in far more engineering and chemistry detail than a nutrition course. Lady Irwin College's 2025-26 prospectus lists 20 core papers for BSc (Hons) Food Technology, covering milk, meat, fish, poultry, cereals and fruit processing, plus Food Engineering, Food Chemistry, Food Microbiology, Food Packaging and Food Standards and Regulations. One of the 20, Nutrition Science, names nutrition. Neither its core list nor its elective list names a counselling or diet therapy paper.
The University of Delhi's Institute of Home Economics describes the same degree's aims in similar terms: food composition, processing and preservation, food safety and quality management, food laws, engineering and packaging. If that list excites you, you probably have your answer. NIFTEM Kundli's programme page adds management, describing its BTech as combining technical and managerial teaching for the food industry, started at the request of industry. A nutrition degree touches several of these subjects, but it does so as a means of feeding people well.
What does a nutrition course study that a food science course does not?
It studies the human body and the person who eats, including diseases, life stages and how to change someone's habits. SNDT Women's University's nutrition and dietetics programme begins with Basics of Nutrition and Dietetics and, in its first year, Human Physiology. Its third-year list includes Medical Nutrition Therapy II, Dietetics Applications, Community Nutrition and Diet Therapy. Students can also choose an elective in nutrition counselling and communication skills, a skill a food plant will rarely ask you to use.
Physiology is the telling subject. A nutrition student learns how organs handle a meal, so that a diet can be planned around a body. A food technology student learns how heat, water and microbes change the meal before it reaches anyone. They are easy to confuse, because both feel like science about food. So ask which question keeps you reading: why does this biscuit stay crisp for months, or why does this person's blood sugar rise after breakfast? The site's list of nutrition course subjects shows the second kind in detail.
Where does each one lead to work in India?
Food science leads mainly towards the food business and its regulators, while nutrition leads towards people, in hospitals, clinics, communities and classrooms. The Institute of Home Economics names developing new food products, improving sensory qualities and nutritional content, and finding new ways to preserve, process, package and distribute food. CSIR-CFTRI's page says students of its MSc Food Technology, which aims to supply the food industry with food technologists, have been placed in food and allied industries, institutions and government organisations through campus selection.
On the nutrition side, Lady Irwin College's Food and Nutrition department says its graduates take roles as dietitians, counsellors, research assistants, consultants, programme officers and faculty, and its mission also mentions food quality control. None of these statements promises you a job, and none tells you what you would earn. The site's nutrition careers in the food industry page shows which product and labelling roles remain open to a nutrition graduate, and which ones want a technology degree.
How do FSSAI roles differ from counselling?
FSSAI roles check food and the businesses that sell it, while counselling helps a person change what they eat, and the qualification clauses reflect that split. FSSAI's compendium of the Food Safety and Standards Rules, Version I of 1 April 2025, says a Food Safety Officer must hold a bachelor's, master's or doctorate in Food Technology, Dairy Technology, Biotechnology, Oil Technology, Agricultural Science, Veterinary Sciences, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Chemistry or medicine, or an equivalent notified qualification, and complete specified training.
Food and Nutrition is not on that list, so a nutrition degree alone does not meet that clause as written. It does appear in the list for Food Analyst, where the rule also asks for 3 years' experience in food analysis and for the candidate to be declared qualified by an appointed board. Food safety supervisors in businesses are a separate matter again, dealt with on the FoSTaC page. Before you study for a post, read its current advertisement, since recruiting bodies apply these clauses.
Counselling has no such list of papers, but it does have a firm limit. Someone holding a certificate or skill diploma works with healthy people and passes medical cases on. Planning a diet to treat a disease belongs to doctors and qualified dietitians, and the route to becoming a dietitian runs through a degree, a postgraduate qualification and an internship. A food technology degree does not prepare you for that room, just as a dietetics degree does not prepare you to run a canning line.
Can you move from one subject to the other later?
Yes in some directions, but usually with extra papers or a further qualification, so check the clause before you rely on it. Lady Irwin College's one-year PG Diploma in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition accepts a BSc (Hons) Food Technology among its entry degrees, and it asks for 50 per cent in any four of eight named subjects, such as Human Physiology, Nutritional Biochemistry and Therapeutic Nutrition. A food technology paper list may not reach four. The comparison of food and nutrition with dietetics degrees covers the similar names.
Going the other way, a nutrition graduate who later wants product work often finds that labelling, claims and formulation roles are the natural door, while plant engineering roles stay closed without more study. SNDT's nutrition list does include Food Microbiology and Safety and a practical in Food Product Modifications, which helps. If you already have one foot in each subject, count your papers honestly and ask the institution in writing before you pay.
Decide between the two this week
Write down your working day
In two lines, describe what you want to be doing at 11 in the morning on a Tuesday: testing a batch, or talking to a client.
Sort one paper list
Take a syllabus from each side and mark each paper as food or person. Notice which set you would actually read for pleasure.
Check your Class 12 subjects
Food technology rules often ask for physics and chemistry. Read the entry clause for your target institution before going further.
Read one real clause
Find a recruitment advertisement for the post you imagine, whether Food Safety Officer, quality executive or dietitian, and read its qualification line.
Choose the level
If the post names a degree, plan for a degree. Take a short course only where the goal is knowledge for work you already do.
Who does a food science course suit?
It suits someone who likes chemistry and laboratories, is curious about how products are made, and would rather improve a thousand packets than advise one family. It suits a Class 12 science student aiming at food companies or food regulation. At a shorter level, it suits a home baker, a cloud kitchen owner or a nutrition coach who needs to read labels and additives properly. For that last group, a course is useful knowledge and does not change anyone's legal duties.
Who does a nutrition course suit?
It suits someone drawn to the body and to people, who is patient about habits, and who is happy to explain the same thing many ways. A student who wants hospital work should look at a degree, and the comparison of BSc Nutrition with BSc Home Science shows how to read those syllabi. A career changer who wants to coach healthy clients can look at skill qualifications, accepting that these do not lead to hospital posts or to treating disease.
NNWA on the same test
NNWA teaches online in English and Hindi with live classes and runs no food technology or nutrition degree, so it cannot replace a BSc or BTech on either side. Its Food Science and FSSAI course is a six-week foundation course covering food science basics, labelling, preservation, additives, FSSAI essentials and quality standards. It carries NNWA's own certificate only, and the university award does not cover it. It is not FoSTaC, and it does not meet the Food Safety Officer clause quoted above.
On the people side, the Diploma in Nutrition, Dietetics and Public Health takes Class 12 in any stream. It is a 600-hour qualification at NCrF and NSQF Level 4, awarded with Medhavi Skills University, Sikkim, which is recognised under section 2(f) of the UGC Act and an NCVET-approved awarding body. It is still not a degree, and it brings neither RD eligibility, nor a hospital dietitian post, nor any right to treat disease. If you want a career in a food company's technical team, take a technology degree instead.
Your next step, by situation
If you are in Class 12 with physics and chemistry and you like the product side, apply for food technology and read each institution's current notice. If you want to work with people, and hospitals are possible, apply for a nutrition degree. If you are a working adult in food who only needs understanding, a short course may be enough. If the goal is a government food safety post, do not buy any short course first: read the clause, because it asks for a named degree.
If you still cannot tell, spend nothing yet. Read a food label against its ingredients on one evening, and on another, plan a day's meals for a relative with no medical condition. Notice which you wanted to carry on with. When you know, NNWA's counsellors can talk through its own courses and their limits on the admissions page, and you should tell them plainly if a degree is what you need.
