NNWA publishes the name and qualifications of everyone who writes and checks its material. You can see the full teaching team on the faculty page.

This page adds one thing to the site's guide to which degree is best for nutrition: it reads named universities' published paper lists and counts. For eligibility and subjects inside the nutrition degree, use the BSc Nutrition and Dietetics guide. If you are also weighing online courses against degrees, start with the dietitian course comparison. NNWA teaches neither degree, and it comes up against the same test further down.
Four universities' paper lists, side by side
Every row below comes from the institution's own document, opened on 1 November 2026. The documents carry different dates, given in the first column, and your intake may follow a newer version. Read the last two columns together. One shows when nutrition first appears. The other shows how much of the degree it becomes. These four are examples of how differently the same names are used, not a ranking.
| Programme and document date | Length as published | First nutrition paper | Nutrition later on |
|---|---|---|---|
| BSc (Hons) Home Science, Lady Irwin College, University of Delhi (2025-26 prospectus) | Three-year bachelor's exit, four years for Honours or Research | Food Science and Nutrition, Semester I (University of Delhi's 2022-23 framework) | 3 of 20 core papers name nutrition, plus a Food and Nutrition elective stream of 12 papers, not all offered |
| BSc Home Science, Goa University (circular of 10 June 2026) | Semesters I to VIII, with an early certificate exit | Food Science, Semester I | Food, Nutrition and Dietetics track from Semester III, including Basic Dietetics and Medical Nutrition Therapy I and II |
| BSc Home Science (Nutrition and Dietetics), SNDT Women's University (2024-25 syllabus) | 132 credits across six semesters | Basics of Nutrition and Dietetics I, Semester I | Medical Nutrition Therapy II in Semester V; Diet Therapy and On the Job Training in Semester VI |
| BSc Nutrition and Dietetics, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (from 2020-21) | Three academic years, six semesters | Food Science, then Principles of Nutrition in Semester II | Nutrition Through Life Cycle in Semester III, Dietetics in Semester V, Clinical Biochemistry in Semester VI |
How much nutrition does BSc Home Science actually teach?
It ranges from a handful of core papers to most of the degree, depending on the university and the track you pick. Lady Irwin College's 2025-26 prospectus lists 20 core papers for BSc (Hons) Home Science. Three carry nutrition in the title: Food Science and Nutrition, Nutrition: A Life Cycle Approach, and Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition I. The other 17 cover human development, textiles, resource management, communication, statistics and basic science.
The depth at Lady Irwin sits in the electives. The same prospectus lists a Food and Nutrition stream of 12 papers, among them Nutritional Biochemistry, Advanced Nutrition and Clinical Nutrition: Theory to Practice, and warns that not every elective may be offered. The college's BSc (Pass) Home Science also names nutrition in 3 of its 20 core papers. So two students with the same college on their certificate can leave with very different amounts of nutrition.
Goa University shows the other pattern. Its June 2026 circular keeps Semesters I and II common, then says discipline-wise specialisation begins in Semester III. On the Food, Nutrition and Dietetics track, from then on, you meet Nutrition Science, Food Microbiology, Nutritional Biochemistry, Public Health Nutrition and Medical Nutrition Therapy. A student on the same degree's Textiles and Fashion Studies track turns to pattern making and apparel design instead, and that track's structure names no further food or nutrition paper.
Does BSc Nutrition teach only nutrition?
No. A nutrition degree also carries languages, physiology and some papers you might have expected on a Home Science form. Manonmaniam Sundaranar University's BSc Nutrition and Dietetics puts Human Development beside Food Science as a Semester I core paper. In Semester V its major electives include Family Resource Management, with Fundamentals of Textiles and Clothing offered as the alternative to Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals. That list dates from the 2020-21 batch, so ask for the current one.
The names blur from the other side too. SNDT Women's University calls its programme Bachelor of Science (Home Science, Nutrition and Dietetics), and it runs a separate one in Home Science, Food Science and Nutrition. Its nutrition programme opens with Basics of Nutrition and Dietetics in Semester I and, in Semester VI, sets four credits of on the job training in the field. On any fair reading that is a nutrition degree with Home Science in the title, and a search by name alone would miss it.
When does each degree make you specialise?
A nutrition degree specialises you on the day you are admitted, while a general Home Science degree usually asks you to choose later. At Goa University that choice falls after the common first year. At Lady Irwin College it comes through the elective stream you pick, and the prospectus lists exit points after each year: a certificate, a diploma, a bachelor's degree and, after four years, an Honours or Research degree. Check when your own university asks, because a school leaver often assumes there is more time than there is.
Think about what that timing means for you at 17. If you really cannot say yet whether food, children, design or communication interests you most, a common first year has real value, because you sample each discipline before committing to one. If you are sure already, those general semesters are time you could have spent on physiology and biochemistry. Neither is a mistake. It is a question of how settled you are today.
What does each degree lead to next?
Both can lead to an MSc, a postgraduate diploma and the Registered Dietitian route, provided your papers meet the rule at each stage. For example, Lady Irwin College's 2025-26 prospectus asks MSc Food and Nutrition applicants for a bachelor's degree in Home Science, Food and Nutrition, or Nutrition and Dietetics with Nutritional Biochemistry and at least three further listed subjects. It has a separate category for University of Delhi Home Science graduates who took Food and Nutrition stream electives. Your electives can decide your master's.
Registered Dietitian (RD) is a credential of the Indian Dietetic Association, not a government licence. The association's eligibility page accepts a graduate degree in food, nutrition and dietetics, or a BSc Home Science with Food and Nutrition as a specialisation covering at least four of five named courses: Nutritional Biochemistry, Food Microbiology, Basic Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition and Therapeutic Nutrition. It also lists a third route, and asks for a postgraduate qualification and a hospital internship. The steps to becoming a dietitian are set out on their own page.
For the postgraduate stage itself, see how an MSc compares with a PG diploma. If your degree ends without enough nutrition, the gap can still be closed, but it costs time. Lady Irwin College's one-year PG Diploma in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition, for instance, asks for 55 per cent overall and 50 per cent in any four of its listed nutrition and food subjects. The page on careers after BSc Home Science covers what graduates can do from there.
Compare the two degrees in one evening
Get the real paper lists
Download the syllabus for each programme from the university's own site, not a brochure or an admission portal. Note the year on it.
Mark the nutrition papers
Highlight every paper naming nutrition, dietetics, diet therapy, biochemistry, food microbiology or physiology, then count them against the total.
Find where the track begins
Note the semester in which you would choose a specialisation, and which electives the college actually runs each year.
Hold the list against the RD courses
Check your highlighted papers against the Indian Dietetic Association's five named courses, even if a hospital seems unlikely today.
Read the entry rule
Check Class 12 subjects, the entrance route and who may apply. SNDT's rule, for one, begins with the words any woman, so read it before you hope.
Open the next step's rule
Read the entry clause of one MSc you would want. Work backwards from it to the degree that meets it.
Who does BSc Nutrition and Dietetics suit?
It suits a school leaver who already knows the subject is food and the human body, and who wants the shortest line to an MSc in the field. It also suits anyone drawn to dietetics in a hospital, because the required physiology and biochemistry arrive early and are not left to electives. The BSc admission guide sets out how seats are filled through merit lists, CUET and private colleges.
Who does BSc Home Science suit?
It suits a student who wants a university degree with several possible directions, including human development, communication and extension, and resource management, as well as nutrition. It suits you if community work appeals, and if a respected Home Science college is within reach while a nutrition degree is not. The site's CUET guide for nutrition and Home Science shows how those subject choices work. If you take this path for nutrition, plan your electives from the first year.
Who should look elsewhere?
If your real interest is the food itself, in product development, processing or quality, neither degree is the natural choice. Lady Irwin College, for example, lists a separate BSc (Hons) Food Technology, and the site's guide to food science and nutrition courses shows how that path differs. If you want to treat disease and are prepared to study medicine, this comparison is also the wrong one. Only doctors and qualified dietitians plan diets to treat disease, and neither bachelor's degree grants that on its own.
If Class 12 science is the barrier, read each rule rather than giving up. Rules differ. SNDT asks for Science or Home Science subjects, and Manonmaniam Sundaranar University for Science. Lady Irwin College's 2025-26 prospectus accepts, for BSc (Pass) Home Science, CUET combinations built from a language and subjects in its List B, while its Honours degree asks for biology with physics or chemistry. Confirm the current year's bulletin, because these combinations can change.
NNWA on the same test
NNWA offers neither degree, so it fails this comparison, and a school leaver who can take a university seat should weigh that first. NNWA is a private skill academy, with live online classes in English and Hindi. Its Diploma in Nutrition, Dietetics and Public Health takes Class 12 in any stream and is a 600-hour qualification at NCrF and NSQF Level 4, awarded with Medhavi Skills University, Sikkim, a university recognised under section 2(f) of the UGC Act and an NCVET-approved awarding body.
None of that makes it a degree. It gives no RD eligibility, no Indian Dietetic Association registration, no hospital dietitian post and no right to treat disease. Holders coach healthy people and refer medical cases. It fits a reader who cannot take up a full-time degree, or who wants applied skills for wellness work, and it is the wrong purchase for anyone set on hospitals. Be honest about which of those readers you are.
Your next step, by situation
If you want hospital dietetics, apply first for the nutrition degree or a Home Science programme with a named nutrition track, then keep the RD course list beside your elective form. If you are unsure, take the Home Science seat at the best college you can reach, and treat the first year as your time to decide. If both are possible and you still cannot choose, pick the one whose paper list you would be glad to study for three years.
If results or CUET scores are not out, buy nothing yet. Download two syllabi and do the count. If no degree seat comes through this year, you have three fair choices: try again next year, take a distance route if the subject rules allow it, or look at a skill course knowing what it does not do. NNWA's counsellors can talk through that last option on the admissions page, and telling them you are still applying for a degree is a sensible way to begin.
