The NNWA journal

You have a degree and one or two years to spend. One option is called an MSc and three or four are called a PG diploma, and they do not all lead to the same place. Here is how to separate them.

How to Choose Between an MSc in Nutrition and a PG Diploma

If you hold a nutrition or home science degree and want to teach or do research, choose an MSc, because the qualifying rules for those posts ask for a master's. If you hold the same degree and want hospital work sooner, a university PG diploma in dietetics can do it, since the Indian Dietetic Association accepts either. If your degree is in another subject and you will coach healthy people, a skill PG diploma such as NNWA's fits, though it is not a degree and leads to no dietitian title.

NNWA publishes the name and qualifications of everyone who writes and checks its material. You can see the full teaching team on the faculty page.

Six ascending columns in brass and forest green, suggesting a route with steps, with the NNWA wordmark in the corner.

The confusion comes from one label covering two different things. A university PG diploma is an academic award in dietetics with a hospital internship. A skill PG diploma is a vocational award, open more widely and aimed at practice with healthy people. The page on the best dietitian course sorts courses by starting point, and choosing a nutrition diploma or PG diploma compares the two levels of NNWA's own courses. This page starts one step later, with a graduate deciding between one year and two.

The routes side by side

These are named examples, not a ranking, and each row comes from the institution's own page or notice. Entry rules differ by university, so a rule in this table belongs to the university named in that row and to nobody else. Check the current year's notice before you rely on any of it, because seats, marks and fees are revised each year.

MSc and PG diploma examples as stated by each institution, checked 1 November 2026. Lady Irwin College's entry rules and seats are from its 2025-26 prospectus, its fees from its 2026-27 notice.

What can an MSc do that a PG diploma cannot?

It meets the entry bar for university teaching. The UGC's 2018 regulations on teacher qualifications ask an assistant professor for a master's degree with 55 per cent in a relevant subject, plus NET or an accepted equivalent, with a PhD counting as an exemption. A PG diploma alone does not meet that first line. Check whether newer regulations apply when you are ready to apply. If lecturing is even a possibility, the MSc keeps it open, and the sector-by-sector look at MSc scope covers what else it leads to.

Research follows the same logic, because the MSc includes a dissertation you design, run and defend. IGNOU's programme guide gives the dissertation 8 of its 72 credits, while a learner leaving early with the diploma stops before it. University of Delhi papers published in 2026 describe the MSc as building research ability in people who may become academics and researchers. Lady Irwin College lists its PG diploma's aim differently: dietitians, nutrition consultants and public health nutritionists. Both are real destinations, and they are different ones.

Does a PG diploma close the hospital route?

No. The Indian Dietetic Association's eligibility page accepts a Post Graduate Diploma in Food Nutrition and Dietetics or an MSc in Foods and Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition or Dietetics, on top of a nutrition-based graduation, life membership and a six-month internship or five years as a hospital dietitian. RD is the association's credential, not a government licence. The wording matters, though. Lady Irwin's diploma is in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition, and SNDT's is in Dietetics, so ask the association whether the exact title on your certificate counts. Hospitals may also set their own preference, so ask them too.

Two more details decide this, and both are easy to miss. The association's FAQ says the RD internship should be done separately and not as part of coursework, unless its RD Board has approved it, so a university's own 3-month posting should not be counted on. That same FAQ refers to postgraduate study as a day scholar, while its eligibility page also allows distance education, so if you plan on IGNOU, get the association's answer in writing first. The full dietitian route covers the exam itself.

The entry rules, university by university

Your first degree may settle this before anything else does. Lady Irwin's MSc wants a bachelor's in home science, food and nutrition or nutrition and dietetics, or its own diploma, with nutritional biochemistry and three further set subjects, and admits on CUET PG scores. Its diploma is wider, taking microbiology, biochemistry, nursing, life sciences and MBBS graduates, but ranks them by marks. IGNOU admits some science honours graduates and MBBS or BHMS holders if they add one of its own nutrition courses, which can be taken alongside.

A graduate in commerce, arts or engineering will not find a door at any of these university routes, as their pages stand today, and the association's graduation rule asks for nutrition-based study anyway. That reader has two honest options: a fresh nutrition degree if hospital work matters enough, or a skill route for non-clinical work, as nutrition courses after graduation explains. Neither is a failure. Read the current notice all the same, and see the MSc admission routes for how entrance and merit work.

How long does each route really take?

Longer than the headline, once you count the internship that the RD exam asks for. On Lady Irwin's published structure, the diploma is one year plus 3 months in a hospital, and the MSc is two years with a summer internship of 4 to 6 weeks. Adding the association's six months makes roughly 21 months against 30, before any wait for the exam. IGNOU's MSc takes 24 to 48 months at your own pace. University of Delhi papers also describe a one-year MSc, but only for its own four-year home science graduates.

The diploma need not be a dead end, as long as you read the exit rules. Lady Irwin's MSc lists its own diploma among its entry routes, so a diploma holder may apply later, at the cost of more time overall. IGNOU works differently: a learner who leaves its MSc with the diploma after 30 credits and the internship gives an undertaking, and its guide says such students will not be allowed to continue to the MSc. Decide before you sign that form, not after.

When is the shorter route the right one?

When you already know you want hospital or community dietetics, hold an eligible nutrition degree, and need to start earning sooner, a one-year university diploma is a sensible choice rather than a lesser one. Lady Irwin's has Therapeutic Nutrition and Public Health Nutrition as core papers, and asks for a tertiary, multispeciality hospital of at least 100 beds for its internship. It is also the right call when two more years of fees or lost income would force you to give up altogether, since the MSc may still follow.

A skill PG diploma is the right short route for a different reader: a graduate in another subject who will coach healthy adults, work in corporate wellness or support a fitness business, and who has no plan to treat disease. Only doctors and qualified dietitians plan diets to treat disease, and a skill diploma holder refers such cases to them. If you have only finished Class 12, neither option is open yet, and applying for a nutrition diploma shows what is.

A method for choosing this week

  1. Check your first degree

List the nutrition subjects on your marksheet and match them against the association's graduation rule and the notice of each university you are considering.

  2. Name the post

Find three real job adverts for the work you want and write down the qualification each one asks for. Let those adverts outrank anyone's opinion, including this page's.

  3. Read the certificate's name

Ask for the exact title of the award and who issues it. University, department and skill awarding body are three different answers.

  4. Ask about the internship

Ask how long it is, which hospital hosts it, and whether it counts towards the RD exam or must be repeated.

  5. Add up time and money

Count fees, travel, lost income and the six-month RD internship across the whole route, not only the course.

Who does an MSc suit?

An MSc suits a nutrition or home science graduate who wants any of three things: a teaching post, a research career or a PhD, or a senior place in a field where the degree is the expected qualification. It also suits someone undecided, since it keeps more doors open for longer. If you already know which kind of MSc you want, the question changes, and MSc Food and Nutrition against MSc Clinical Nutrition reads the two names against real syllabi.

Who does a university PG diploma suit?

It suits an eligible graduate who is sure about dietetics and values time. It also suits a working nurse or life science graduate moving into nutrition, where a university accepts that background, and who wants hospital training over a research project. It does not suit someone who has any wish to lecture, because the master's would still be needed later. Seats are few at the two campuses in the table, so have a second choice ready, and read the notice for the year you will actually apply.

Who should look elsewhere?

Look elsewhere if your interest is food manufacturing, labelling or quality, where a food science or technology route is a closer match. Do the same if you mainly want one narrow skill, because a short course costs less than either route here. NNWA's Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics course carries its own certificate only and suits people adding background to existing work: it gives no right to treat disease and is no substitute for a dietetics degree. Anyone wanting public health work should compare public health against nutrition and dietetics first.

NNWA's PG Diploma on the same test

Run NNWA through the same questions. It is a private skill academy, not a university, and runs no MSc and no university PG diploma in dietetics. Its Post Graduation Diploma asks for a degree in any discipline, lasts a year, is taught live online in English and Hindi, and is awarded with Medhavi Skills University, Sikkim, a university recognised under section 2(f) of the UGC Act and an NCVET-approved awarding body. It is not a degree.

So it fails three tests in this article by design. It does not meet the teaching bar, because that asks for a master's. It gives no RD eligibility, no hospital dietitian post and no right to treat disease. Its advantage is breadth of entry: a commerce or arts graduate can join it, which none of the university routes above allows. If you hold an eligible nutrition degree and want hospital work, the university route is the better one for you, and it would be a mistake to pay NNWA instead.

Your decision, by situation

If you have a nutrition or home science degree and may ever teach or research, apply for the MSc. With the same degree, a firm wish for hospital work and little money or time, apply for a university diploma and a master's as a fallback. If you hold a degree in another subject and want non-clinical work, compare skill diplomas, and ask NNWA's counsellors through its admissions page if that is the one you are weighing.

If you hold a degree in another subject and want a hospital post, do not buy a shortcut, because there is none. Read which degree suits which nutrition goal and price a fresh nutrition degree honestly. And if you cannot yet say what work you want, pay for nothing this month. Read three job adverts, speak to one working dietitian and one coach, and decide after that.
