NNWA publishes the name and qualifications of everyone who writes and checks its material. You can see the full teaching team on the faculty page.

Course names in this field are used loosely, and the comparison of dietitian courses in India already sets out what each level leads to. This page does a narrower job: it shows how to read one programme's real nature from four facts on its own page, using named examples read on 1 November 2026. The finer split between clinical and therapeutic nutrition courses is covered separately, and what dietetics is as a discipline has its own explainer.
Are clinical nutrition and dietetics different subjects?
They overlap so heavily that no rule in the sources below separates them. Dietetics usually names the profession of planning and managing diets, in hospitals above all, while clinical nutrition names the science of nutrition in illness. Syllabi under either heading cover similar ground: SNDT Women's University lists Medical Nutrition Management and Nutrition in Critical Care under its MSc Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, and Sri Ramachandra lists Medical Nutrition Therapy and Pathophysiology under its MSc Clinical Nutrition.
The association's wording settles the practical point. Its eligibility page lists a postgraduate degree in foods and nutrition, clinical nutrition or dietetics as one option for its exam, beside a postgraduate diploma in food, nutrition and dietetics. The word on the degree therefore matters less than the other conditions: a full-time graduation, UGC-recognised universities and a continuous hospital internship. How to choose between MSc Food and Nutrition and MSc Clinical Nutrition takes that pair further.
The same words on very different programmes
Read the table for one thing: how little the title predicts. Two programmes share the title MSc Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics and admit different graduates. A degree named Food and Nutrition carries a clinical specialisation. Short skill courses, NNWA's included, use some of the same words as two-year degrees, which is why the words cannot be your test.
| Programme | Who may enter | Hospital or practical time | Awarded by |
|---|---|---|---|
| SNDT Women's University, Mumbai: MSc Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics | Nutrition-related graduation at 50 per cent; composite Home Science, commerce, arts and pure science graduates not eligible; life science, biochemistry and physiology graduates at 60 per cent with 8 related credits | On-the-job training with a multispeciality hospital after the first year (2026-27 campus guide) | The university |
| Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala, affiliated colleges: MSc Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics | Graduates in clinical nutrition, food and nutrition, food technology, nursing, zoology, microbiology, chemistry, biotechnology or biochemistry, with a minimum score (2026 prospectus) | Not stated in the prospectus entry | The university |
| Sri Ramachandra Institute, Chennai: MSc Clinical Nutrition | BSc Clinical Nutrition, BSc Nutrition, Food Service Management and Dietetics, or a postgraduate diploma in nutrition and dietetics or clinical nutrition | Curriculum lists three clinical professional practice courses and a Professional Competency Internship | The institute |
| Lady Irwin College, University of Delhi: MSc Food and Nutrition, clinical specialisation | Home Science, food and nutrition or nutrition and dietetics degree, or the postgraduate diploma below, with named papers (2026-27 bulletin) | A 4 to 6 week summer placement in hospitals, NGOs, research institutes or the food industry (2025-26 prospectus) | University of Delhi |
| Lady Irwin College: Post-Graduate Diploma in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition | Home Science, food technology, microbiology, biochemistry, nursing, life sciences or MBBS, at 55 per cent overall (2025-26 prospectus) | A 3-month internship in a hospital dietetics department (2025-26 prospectus) | University of Delhi |
| NNWA: Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, 3 months | Listed by NNWA at Advanced level; no university entry rule | No hospital placement | NNWA's own certificate only |
| NNWA: Post Graduation Diploma, 1 year | A degree in any discipline | Guided practical experience; no hospital placement | With Medhavi Skills University, Sikkim |
What does the entry rule tell you?
It tells you what the programme assumes you already know, which is the fastest way to place it. A programme that demands a nutrition degree, as Sri Ramachandra's does, is building on physiology and biochemistry you studied for three years. One that takes any science graduate starts further back. One that takes any stream or any degree is a different kind of qualification altogether. Reading this row first saves you comparing syllabi of programmes you could never have entered.
The rule also differs between programmes with the same title. SNDT shuts its MSc to composite Home Science and most pure science graduates. Mahatma Gandhi University's 2026 prospectus opens its MSc of the same name to zoology, chemistry and nursing graduates. Neither rule is a national one. If admission is your next question, how to get admission in an MSc in nutrition and dietetics works through it subject by subject.
Hours show what a title hides
Ask for total hours, then for the split between theory and supervised practice. The Institute of Home Economics, University of Delhi, lists 1,485 theory hours and 2,250 practical hours for its four-year Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (Honours), in a notice dated 25 August 2026. NNWA's Diploma is a 600-hour qualification. Neither figure is wrong for its purpose, and the distance between them is the distance between a degree and a skill course, whatever each one is called.
Months are a weaker measure, because a month can hold ten hours or a hundred. A course that advertises its length in weeks and will not state its hours is hard to compare with anything. When you do have the figures, how to compare two nutrition course syllabi shows how to set them side by side, topic by topic, so that a long list of disease names does not pass for depth.
Does the course include a hospital internship?
Ask this in writing, because the answers run from six months to nothing. Lady Irwin College's 2025-26 prospectus gives its postgraduate diploma a 3-month internship in a hospital dietetics department. SNDT's 2026-27 campus guide places MSc students with a multispeciality hospital after the first year, and the Institute of Home Economics lists a 6-month clinical internship in its degree. NNWA's courses include no hospital placement, and an online class, however well taught, gives no practice on a ward.
Separate a programme's own placement from the internship the Indian Dietetic Association asks for. Its page wants six months of continuous internship at a hospital it recognises for RD training, with life membership taken before that begins. Ask the department whether its placement counts towards this or sits before it, and check the hospital against the association's list. The steps after the course are in how to become a dietitian in India, and a hospital dietitian's working day shows what the training is for.
Who awards the certificate, and what does that open?
The awarding body decides who can check the paper and what it counts towards. A university degree is that university's own award, and the association's exam asks for UGC-recognised universities at both graduate and postgraduate level. A private provider's certificate is only as checkable as the name printed on it, so look for that name before you look at the syllabus. Put one blunt question to every provider: whose name is on the paper, and what is that paper accepted for?
Scope does not follow the course title either. Only doctors and qualified dietitians plan diets that treat disease, the work described in what medical nutrition therapy involves. A certificate or skill diploma holder coaches healthy people and refers medical cases, even after a course with clinical in its name. A good skill course teaches you to recognise the case that is not yours to handle, and that lesson is worth paying for only if you accept the limit.
Read any course in four checks, then match it to your work
Copy the entry rule
Take it from the provider's own page. If any stream or any degree qualifies, treat it as a skill course, whatever the title says.
Get the hours
Write down total hours and how many are supervised practice. If neither is printed, ask by email and keep the reply.
Find the hospital
Note where the internship happens, for how long, and who arranges it. No hospital named means no hospital promised.
Name the awarding body
Find whose name goes on the certificate, then confirm it on that body's own website instead of the seller's.
Match it to your week
Write down who you will work with on an ordinary day. Patients whose diet treats a disease need the degree route; healthy clients do not.
NNWA under the same four checks
NNWA is a private skill academy teaching online in English and Hindi, with live classes, and it runs no degree. On entry, its Post Graduation Diploma takes a degree in any discipline and its Diploma takes Class 12 in any stream, which by the first check marks both as skill courses. On hours, the Diploma is a 600-hour qualification at NCrF and NSQF Level 4. On hospital time, there is none. On award, the flagship programmes are made with Medhavi Skills University, Sikkim, as the affiliation page explains.
The Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics course sits outside that award and carries NNWA's own certificate only. None of these is a degree. None gives RD eligibility, Indian Dietetic Association registration, a hospital dietitian post or the right to treat disease. If a hospital post is your goal, NNWA is the wrong purchase. NNWA against Medvarsity for clinical nutrition applies the same kind of test to a named competitor.
The reader a university programme suits
A university programme suits a science graduate with nutrition papers who wants to work with patients, teach or do research, and who can attend full time or holds a degree that qualifies for distance study. IGNOU's MSc in Food and Nutrition, for one, runs 24 to 48 months by distance and lists nutrition-background graduates, plus some science and medical graduates with an added IGNOU nutrition course. Pick by the work you want: a clinical specialisation for wards, public health nutrition for community programmes.
The reader a skill course in clinical nutrition suits
A skill course suits a nurse, physiotherapist, pharmacist or doctor adding nutrition to an existing licence. It suits a nutrition coach who keeps meeting clients with diabetes or thyroid conditions and wants to work safely beside their doctors. It also suits a graduate from another field building a coaching practice with healthy adults. The common thread is a limit each one accepts: clinical decisions stay with someone qualified to make them, and clinical diet planning taught online should be judged on that footing.
Readers who should look elsewhere
Look elsewhere than any short course if you want a hospital dietitian post and do not yet hold a nutrition degree: your next step is a BSc, and admission to a BSc in nutrition and dietetics sets out the routes. Look elsewhere than an MSc if your degree misses its entry rule and you have not asked whether a postgraduate diploma first would help. And look elsewhere than any provider, NNWA included, that says a clinical title lets you treat patients.
Your next move, by where you stand
If you are at school or in your first year of college, do not buy a certificate to get ahead on clinical work, because a certificate does not shorten the route. Read the BSc entry rules instead. If you are a nutrition or Home Science graduate aiming at hospitals, compare MSc and postgraduate diploma entry rules this month, before the next cycle's forms appear, and put your internship question to each department in writing.
If you are a graduate in another subject who wants to coach healthy people, read the NNWA course pages, then speak to NNWA's admissions team and ask the same four questions you would put to anyone else. If you have Class 12 and no degree, a postgraduate course is closed to you for now, so the Diploma is the one to read. If you already practise as a clinician, go straight to the syllabus comparison.
Buy nothing yet if you cannot say who you will work with, or if your answer is hospital patients and you hold no qualifying degree. In that case the useful spending this month is time on university admission pages. A provider that cannot answer the six questions above in writing has told you what you need to know, whichever name its course carries.
