NNWA publishes the name and qualifications of everyone who writes and checks its material. You can see the full teaching team on the faculty page.

This comparison was made on 1 November 2026. NASM's pages opened normally. The NSCA's website refused the automated reader used for this check, so its live pages could not be read. The NSCA facts below come from its Certification Handbook, effective 1 September 2021, which is the PDF still at its own address, and from the Pearson VUE page for NSCA exams. Treat the handbook's figures as dated and confirm them with the NSCA. If you are still choosing a first credential, begin with the main guide to personal trainer certification in India.
What do the NSCA and NASM actually certify?
The NSCA's handbook says the CSCS recognises people who design and run strength and conditioning programmes for athletes in a team setting, including sport-specific testing and guidance on nutrition and injury prevention. NASM's page describes the PES as an advanced course in strength, power, speed, agility and conditioning, taught through its own OPT Model. NASM draws the line itself: its FAQ says a certification like the CSCS has a different scope and eligibility pathway, and calls it more academically focused. So one is an exam for a job role, the other a course that adds a method.
| Point | NSCA CSCS | NASM PES |
|---|---|---|
| Entry rule | Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution, or a degree in physical therapy or chiropractic medicine, plus current CPR and AED. Final-year students may sit the exam. | No required prerequisites. NASM recommends the NASM-CPT, a related degree or another accredited credential. |
| What you buy | An exam. The handbook's fee table covers the exam only. | A self-paced online course in six sections, with the exam after it. |
| Time | No study period is set. Other requirements must be met within one year of passing. | NASM says many finish in 6 to 8 weeks. Five years of access, one year from purchase to take the exam. |
| Exam | Two sections: 95 questions in 1.5 hours and 125 questions in 2.5 hours. 30 to 40 questions use video or images. | 100 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, online and open-book. 70 per cent to pass, up to three attempts. |
| Where you sit it | Pearson VUE test centres. Pearson's NSCA page lists online testing for the TSAC-F exam only. | Online. |
| Fee as published | $340 for NSCA members, $475 for non-members. One-section retake $250 or $385. | $41, marked down to $26 a month. The page text read gives no one-off total. |
| Renewal | Three-year cycle, up to 6.0 CEUs depending on certification date, with CPR and AED kept current. | NASM says the credential does not require renewal and does not expire. |
| Accreditation | The handbook says the CSCS meets NCCA standards. | NASM says the PES is not NCCA-accredited. It names the NASM-CPT and AFAA-CGFI as its accredited credentials. |
Read the table for what it is: two different purchases. Against the CSCS you are paying for a test of knowledge you must build elsewhere. Against the PES you are paying for teaching plus an open-book test. Comparing the two fees directly misleads, because the NSCA's figure leaves out study materials and the journey to a test centre, while NASM's monthly figure leaves out how many months you will pay.
Does the CSCS need a degree, and will an Indian degree count?
Yes, the CSCS asks for a degree, and NASM's page says the same about it. The NSCA's handbook asks for a bachelor's or higher from an accredited institution, and lets candidates with senior standing sit the exam, provided every requirement is met within one year of passing. For colleges outside the US, it says they must have recognition from that country's Ministry of Education. It names no Indian university and sets no field of study in the text read here. Write to the NSCA before you pay and ask how it treats your university.
Two more things belong in that email. Ask whether any change to the degree rule is planned for later years, because the handbook available for this check is from 2021 and this article cannot speak for the current site. Ask how it wants your transcript too. The 2021 text wants an official transcript sent directly from the registrar's office, confirming the degree was conferred, either sealed or through a secure electronic service. University offices can take time over this, so start it before you book anything.
Exam centres and the real cost of sitting in India
The NSCA's handbook says exams run year-round at Pearson VUE computer-based test centres. Pearson VUE's page for the NSCA offers a test-centre search and lists online testing for the TSAC-F exam only, so plan for a centre. That page also shows a toll-free customer service number for India. The search itself is a live tool and returned no list for this check, so run it for your own city before you decide. A coach in Kolkata and a coach in a smaller town may face very different journeys.
The handbook adds a caution worth reading. It names NSCA affiliates in Japan, Italy, Spain, Korea and China, does not name India, and says the NSCA cannot guarantee international candidates the same access to exams and other services as US candidates. None of that stops an Indian candidate. It does mean you should budget for a day away, a possible retake after the 90-day wait the handbook sets, and continuing education that may be easier to find online than nearby. NASM's exam, by contrast, is online, so it needs a stable connection and no travel.
The shorter NASM route: what it gives and leaves out
The PES gives you a teaching sequence: coaching and sport psychology, sport science, assessment and monitoring, the training model, programme design, then nutrition and supplementation. A trainer who already works with young cricketers or club footballers can apply that quickly, and NASM says many finish in 6 to 8 weeks while working full time. What it leaves out is a gate. An open-book test with three attempts proves you worked through the material. It does not show what a closed test-centre exam shows, and NASM itself says the course is a specialisation rather than an accredited certification.
Does NASM's PES replace a personal trainer certificate?
No. NASM recommends that PES candidates already hold the NASM-CPT, a related bachelor's degree or another accredited credential, though it does not insist. Its own personal trainer page asks for a high school qualification and current CPR and AED before that exam. A newcomer who skips the base can pass the PES and still lack the general coaching skills a gym expects. If you are weighing the base credential itself, the batch's guides on K11 against NASM and NASM against ACE cover that decision.
Is a shorter conditioning course a sensible first step?
Yes, in three situations: you have no degree yet, you have never coached an athlete through a season, or you cannot tell whether you enjoy this work more than general training. A course of a couple of months lets you find out before you commit to a dollar exam and months of textbook study. It does not replace the CSCS for a role that names it. The strength and conditioning routes guide sets out what the wider field teaches, so use it to judge any short course's syllabus, including this site's.
A short course earns its place only if it tests you. Ask how your assessment works, whether you submit a real training plan, and who reads it. Check how much is taught live, because periodisation and load decisions are hard to learn from video alone, a point the batch's online and classroom comparison takes further. Within NNWA, the comparison of Sports Conditioning and the Advanced Diploma shows how the two differ in length and award.
Decide between CSCS, PES and a shorter course this week
Check your degree status
Find your degree certificate and transcript. If you have a bachelor's or are in your final year, mark the CSCS as open to you. If not, mark it as a later goal.
Read five real adverts
Collect adverts from the teams, academies and gyms you would actually join. Note which credential each one names, and which name none.
Run the exam logistics
Search the nearest centre on Pearson VUE's NSCA page, email the NSCA about your university, and book a CPR and AED course if yours has lapsed.
Try the sample questions
Appendix F of the NSCA handbook carries the CSCS content outline and sample questions. Answer them closed-book and see how far your physiology and biomechanics stretch.
Price each route in rupees
Add exam fee, books, travel, card charges and a possible retake for the CSCS. For the PES, ask NASM for the total, not the monthly figure.
Commit to one next step
Pick the route your adverts and your degree status point to, and put an exam or start date on it. Leave the other route for later.
The coach each route suits
The CSCS suits a graduate, in any subject under the handbook's wording, who wants team, academy or institute work and will spend months preparing for a closed exam. Physical education and sports science graduates start with an advantage in the content. The PES suits a working trainer without a degree who has athletes in front of them now and wants a system to apply straight away. A shorter conditioning course suits someone testing their interest, or a trainer who wants live teaching and feedback, in English or Hindi, before taking on an exam abroad.
Coaches who should look elsewhere
Look elsewhere if you want to rehabilitate injuries: that belongs to physiotherapy, and no exam here changes it. Look elsewhere too if you want a sports science career in research or a national institute, because a degree in that subject is the longer and more direct road. A brand-new trainer with no clients should not start with either the CSCS or the PES, since both assume you already understand general training. And if your main need is food advice for athletes, a nutrition course will serve you better than a conditioning one.
NNWA under the same test
NNWA is not one of the two options. It does not offer the CSCS or the PES, and it is not an exam centre for either. NNWA is a private skill academy, and its teaching is online, live, and in English and Hindi. Its Sports Conditioning course runs for 2 months at an advanced level and carries NNWA's own certificate only. The university award does not cover it. It has no degree gate and no international exam, which is the trade you are making.
Its Advanced Diploma in Personal Training with Sports Nutrition runs 3 to 4 months and is awarded with Medhavi Skills University, Sikkim, a university recognised under section 2(f) of the UGC Act and an NCVET-approved awarding body. That is more than a short certificate, but it is not a degree, and it will not meet a bachelor's requirement like the one in the NSCA's handbook. NNWA's courses give no right to treat disease or injury. Ask about any of this on the NNWA admissions page before you pay.
Nutrition is a separate decision
Both credentials touch food: the handbook's description of the CSCS includes guidance on nutrition, and the PES has a section on nutrition and supplementation. Neither is a nutrition qualification. If you write meal plans for lifters or athletes, read what a sports nutrition certification adds for a strength coach, and use the batch's guide to which course to take first to sequence the two. Coaches work with healthy athletes and refer. Only doctors and qualified dietitians plan diets to treat disease, and that holds for every certificate named on this page.
What should you do next?
If you are a graduate aiming at team work, confirm your degree with the NSCA, start the transcript and set an exam month. If you have no degree and coach athletes now, compare the PES with a live conditioning course on syllabus and feedback, then pick one. If you are a new trainer, buy neither yet: get a general certification, spend three months assisting a working strength coach, and decide after that. If you cannot name one athlete you would train next month, keep your money until you can.
