Rotis and parathas
Calories in Methi Paratha
One methi paratha has about 135 kcal, with 3.9 g of protein, 20.2 g of carbohydrate and 4 g of fat. The Indian Nutrient Databank figure is for a paratha of 27 g of atta kneaded with 17 g of methi leaves and 27 g of onion, cooked with 3.5 g of oil. With more oil it is not this light.
Nutrition in 1 methi paratha
| Nutrient | 1 methi paratha | 2 methi parathas |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | 135 kcal | 270 kcal |
| Protein | 3.9 g | 7.8 g |
| Carbohydrate (available) | 20.2 g | 40.4 g |
| Total fat | 4 g | 8 g |
| Dietary fibre | 4.6 g | 9.2 g |
| Sugars | 2.2 g | 4.4 g |
Of this energy, about 61% comes from carbohydrate, 27% from fat and 12% from protein.
1 methi paratha is about 6% of the daily energy requirement of a sedentary adult man and 8% of a sedentary adult woman's (ICMR-NIN, 2020).
These figures are from the Indian Nutrient Databank (INDB), which calculates each dish from a standard recipe using Indian food composition data. They describe that recipe and that serving: a larger portion, or more oil, ghee or sugar, gives more. Source: Vijayakumar A, Dubasi HB, Awasthi A, Jaacks LM. Development of an Indian Food Composition Database. Current Developments in Nutrition. 2024;8(7):103790 (Indian Nutrient Databank, INDB).
What this figure covers
Methi paratha is not a stuffed paratha: the chopped leaves go into the dough. The standard recipe behind the figure kneads 80 g of atta with 50 g of fenugreek leaves and 80 g of onion, uses 10 g of oil in all and makes 3 parathas. One paratha therefore has 27 g of flour and only 3.5 g of oil, which is less than a teaspoon. That small amount of fat is what the 135 kcal rests on. Parathas shallow-fried in the usual home way, or served with butter at a dhaba, sit well above it.
The energy split is unlike most parathas. Carbohydrate supplies 61%, fat 27% and protein 12%, where the plain paratha in the same comparison gets more than half its energy from fat. The flour provides most of the calories, and the leaves and onion add volume, some iron and calcium, and much of the 4.6 g of fibre, for very little energy. The methi is not what makes it light, though. The recipe is light because it is sparing with oil.
What goes into one serving
The recipe INDB analysed makes 3 parathas. These are its main ingredients; spices, salt and water are left out.
| Ingredient | In the recipe | In 1 methi paratha |
|---|---|---|
| Atta (whole wheat flour) | 80 g | 27 g |
| Fenugreek leaves (methi) | 50 g | 17 g |
| Onion | 80 g | 27 g |
| Oil | 10 g | 3.5 g |
What changes the number
- 01
The oil, above all
At 3.5 g of oil a paratha, this recipe is close to a roti with a smear of fat. One extra teaspoon of oil brings a paratha to about 179 kcal, and a teaspoon of ghee to 180 kcal. Two teaspoons of ghee make it 225 kcal, which is heavier than the plain paratha at 166 kcal.
- 02
Fresh leaves or kasuri methi
The figure assumes fresh fenugreek leaves, 17 g in each paratha. Dried kasuri methi gives the flavour with far less leaf, so the fibre, iron and calcium from the greens are lower even if the calories barely move.
- 03
Besan, curd or milk in the dough
Many cooks add besan, curd or a little milk to soften the dough and tame the bitterness. Each adds some protein and a few calories that this recipe does not include.
- 04
How thick it is rolled
The dough here is 27 g of atta a paratha. A thicker, larger paratha uses more flour and holds more oil on its surface, so both parts of the count go up together.

In a meal and in a day
One methi paratha is about 6% of a sedentary man's daily energy requirement and 8% of a woman's. Two come to 270 kcal with 7.8 g of protein, and three to 405 kcal with 11.7 g. That leaves room on the plate for curd, dal or an egg, which the meal needs: the protein in the paratha is modest. Because the greens are already in the bread, a simple bowl of curd completes it. Among the 15 breads compared, only the methi thepla is lighter, at 126 kcal.
Ways to keep it lighter
- Keep the oil to a light brushing, because that is the only reason this paratha is lighter than the others.
- Use plenty of fresh leaves; they add fibre and iron and almost no calories.
- Knead the dough with curd in place of extra oil to keep the parathas soft.
- Eat it with a bowl of curd or dal to make the meal more filling without a third paratha.
Before you rely on the number
The low figure belongs to the recipe, not to the name. A methi paratha fried in 2 teaspoons of ghee comes to about 225 kcal, far from 135 kcal. The leaves do contribute some iron, but plant iron is not absorbed as readily as iron from meat. Fenugreek is sometimes promoted for blood sugar; a paratha is not a treatment, and anyone with diabetes should follow the plan their doctor or dietitian has set.
Food composition is general information, not a diet plan. Anyone managing a medical condition should plan their diet with a doctor or a registered dietitian.
Methi Paratha: common questions
How many calories are in 2 methi parathas?
About 270 kcal, with 7.8 g of protein, 40.4 g of carbohydrate and 8 g of fat, when each is made as in the reference recipe with 3.5 g of oil. Two parathas cooked with a teaspoon of ghee each would be considerably higher.
Is methi paratha good for weight loss?
As this recipe makes it, it is one of the easier parathas to fit in: 135 kcal, 4.6 g of fibre and only 27% of its energy from fat. That holds only while the oil stays low. Weight loss depends on total intake across the day, so the sides and the number of parathas count as much as the choice of paratha.
How much protein is in a methi paratha?
About 3.9 g in one and 7.8 g in two. That is a little more than a plain paratha at 2.8 g, helped by the leaves and onion, but it is still a small amount. Curd, dal, paneer or an egg on the side makes the meal more complete.
What is the difference between methi paratha and methi thepla?
Both knead fenugreek leaves into the dough. In these recipes the paratha is all whole wheat and has 135 kcal, while the thepla mixes several flours with curd, is rolled smaller and has 126 kcal. Protein is similar: 3.9 g in the paratha and 3.3 g in the thepla.
