Rotis and parathas

Calories in Mooli Paratha

One mooli paratha has about 184 kcal, with 3.3 g of protein, 20.5 g of carbohydrate and 9.5 g of fat. The Indian Nutrient Databank works this out for a paratha made from 27 g of atta, 33 g of radish, a little onion and 2 teaspoons of oil. That is a modest size; a thick winter paratha with butter is heavier.

Of this energy, about 45% comes from carbohydrate, 47% from fat and 7% from protein.

1 mooli paratha is about 9% of the daily energy requirement of a sedentary adult man and 11% of a sedentary adult woman's (ICMR-NIN, 2020).

These figures are from the Indian Nutrient Databank (INDB), which calculates each dish from a standard recipe using Indian food composition data. They describe that recipe and that serving: a larger portion, or more oil, ghee or sugar, gives more. Source: Vijayakumar A, Dubasi HB, Awasthi A, Jaacks LM. 02The number

What this figure covers

The source is a standard recipe: 80 g of atta, 100 g of radish, 25 g of onion and 2 tablespoons of oil, divided into 3 parathas. Each paratha gets roughly 27 g of flour and 33 g of grated radish. That is less dough than many households use for a stuffed paratha, and far less than the large ones sold at roadside stalls on winter mornings. If yours fills the tawa, it may well hold the flour of two of these, and the calories follow the flour.

Radish is mostly water, so it adds bulk and sharpness without adding much energy. The split shows it: 47% of the calories come from fat, 45% from carbohydrate and 7% from protein. Nearly all the fat is the cooking oil and nearly all the carbohydrate is the atta, while the whole wheat flour and the radish together give 4.3 g of fibre. In this set of recipes the mooli paratha sits at 184 kcal, between the gobi paratha at 181 kcal and the aloo paratha at 191 kcal, which says how little the choice of vegetable changes the total.

03The recipe behind it

What goes into one serving

The recipe INDB analysed makes 3 parathas. These are its main ingredients; spices, salt and water are left out.

04What moves it

What changes the number

  • 01

    Squeezing the radish

Grated mooli lets out a lot of water. If it is not squeezed dry, the paratha needs thicker dough to hold together, and more flour means more calories. Many cooks knead the squeezed juice into the atta so nothing is wasted.

  • 02

    Stuffed or kneaded in

Some families knead grated radish straight into the dough and roll it like a roti. That version tends to take less dough per paratha than a stuffed one, though the oil used on the tawa still decides most of the difference.

  • 03

    Two teaspoons of oil

The recipe counts 2 teaspoons of oil for every paratha, about 44 kcal each. One more teaspoon of oil takes a paratha to roughly 228 kcal and a teaspoon of ghee to 229 kcal; two teaspoons of ghee, 274 kcal.

  • 04

    The white butter

Mooli paratha is traditionally served with a lump of white butter and a bowl of curd. The butter is nearly pure fat and is not part of the 184 kcal, so it should be counted as an extra.

06On the plate

In a meal and in a day

For a sedentary adult, one mooli paratha is about 9% of a man's daily energy requirement and 11% of a woman's. Two make 368 kcal with 6.6 g of protein, and three reach 552 kcal with 9.9 g. The protein stays low however many are eaten, so the usual bowl of curd is doing real work at the table. With curd and no butter, two parathas make a reasonable winter breakfast; with butter and a glass of sweet lassi, the same breakfast is a much larger one.

Ways to keep it lighter

  • Squeeze the grated radish hard and use the juice to knead the dough, so the paratha can be rolled thin.
  • Add the chopped radish leaves to the filling for more greens in the same paratha.
  • Roast the paratha dry on both sides first, then finish it with one measured teaspoon of oil.
  • Keep the curd and drop the butter, or use a thin smear in place of a lump.
07Worth knowing

Before you rely on the number

Mooli fillings are salted to draw out water, so a home paratha can hold a fair amount of salt that the calorie figure says nothing about. The larger point is portion creep: a mooli paratha feels light because of the vegetable, yet close to half its energy is oil. Anyone managing diabetes, blood pressure or a heart condition should go by the portions and fat allowance set by their doctor or dietitian.

Food composition is general information, not a diet plan. Anyone managing a medical condition should plan their diet with a doctor or a registered dietitian.

08Questions

Mooli Paratha: common questions

How many calories are in 2 mooli parathas?

Two mooli parathas of the reference size have about 368 kcal, with 6.6 g of protein, 41 g of carbohydrate and 19 g of fat. The count assumes 2 teaspoons of oil in each and no butter on top.

Is mooli paratha good for weight loss?

Radish is very low in calories, but the paratha is not: 184 kcal, with 47% of it from fat. It helps that the filling adds volume and that one paratha has 4.3 g of fibre. Cooking it with less oil and eating it with curd makes it easier to fit into a lower-calorie day. Weight change still comes down to the whole day's intake.

Mooli paratha or aloo paratha: which has fewer calories?

There is very little in it. The mooli paratha has 184 kcal and the aloo paratha 191 kcal in these recipes, and the protein is close as well, 3.3 g against 3.5 g. How much oil or ghee goes on the tawa matters far more than which of the two is on the plate.

How much protein does a mooli paratha have?

About 3.3 g, which supplies only 7% of its energy. Radish adds almost no protein, so the figure is close to what the flour alone provides. Curd, a glass of milk or a boiled egg alongside is the simple way to make up for it.
