Per 100 g, red rajma gives 299 kcal, 19.9 g protein, 16.6 g dietary fibre and 316 micrograms of folate, according to IFCT 2017. About rajma (red kidney beans)
Rajma, the kidney bean, came to India from the Americas and settled in the hills. Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand grow small, quick-cooking hill rajma valued for its creamy texture, while Maharashtra and Karnataka grow larger beans. IFCT 2017 records it as rajmah in Hindi, Assamese and Manipuri, razma in Kashmiri, lal rajmah in Punjabi and shravangheveda in Marathi.
Rajma chawal, kidney beans in a thick onion, tomato and ginger gravy over steamed rice, is the Sunday lunch of Punjab, Delhi and Jammu. Kashmiri cooks make razma with fennel and dry ginger, Himachal and Uttarakhand cook small local rajma with simple spices, and dal makhani blends a handful of rajma with whole urad. Rajma also goes into salads, tikkis and wraps.
IFCT 2017 tests three colours, and this page uses red, the one most Indian shops sell. Black rajma has 19.0 g protein, 17.7 g fibre, 6.17 mg iron and 134 mg calcium per 100 g, and brown rajma 19.5 g protein, 16.9 g fibre, 6.3 mg iron and 134 mg calcium, against 19.9 g, 16.6 g, 6.13 mg and 126 mg for red. Pick by taste; the nutrition barely changes.

Before you plan around it
Raw or undercooked kidney beans contain a natural lectin that can cause severe vomiting and diarrhoea within hours. Soak rajma overnight, throw away the soaking water, and boil hard or pressure-cook until completely soft; slow cookers on low heat may not destroy it. Properly cooked rajma is safe. Its complex sugars cause gas in many people, so hing, ginger and a good soak help. Like other pulses it carries phytate, which holds back part of its iron and zinc, so tomato and lemon in the gravy are useful as well as tasty.
Food composition is general information, not a diet plan. Anyone managing a medical condition should plan their diet with a doctor or a registered dietitian.
What people ask about rajma (red kidney beans)
Is rajma high in protein?
Rajma has 19.9 g protein per 100 g in IFCT 2017, about 37 per cent of a man's daily requirement and 44 per cent of a woman's. That is good, though below most other pulses. Rajma chawal pairs it with rice, which completes its protein.
Is rajma good for people with diabetes?
Rajma's 16.6 g fibre per 100 g slows digestion, which helps in a balanced meal. The rice portion in rajma chawal matters more than the beans. Anyone managing diabetes should set rajma and rice portions with a doctor or dietitian.
Why does rajma cause gas?
Rajma contains complex sugars that the gut cannot digest, and bacteria ferment them, producing gas. Soaking overnight and discarding the water, cooking until very soft, and adding hing, ginger or cumin all help. Small portions at first let the gut adjust.
Which rajma is best, red, brown or black?
Per 100 g in IFCT 2017, the three are almost identical: 19.0 to 19.9 g protein, 16.6 to 17.7 g fibre and 6.13 to 6.3 mg iron. Choose by taste and texture. Smaller hill rajma cooks faster and creamier than large red beans.
