Calories in Bharwa Karela

One bowl of bharwa karela has about 231 kcal, with 1.4 g of protein, 2.6 g of carbohydrate and 23.7 g of fat. The Indian Nutrient Databank's recipe is 80 g of bitter gourd, stuffed with spices and fried in 1 tablespoon plus 10 g of oil. Nearly all of that is frying oil; less oil means a much lighter bowl.

1 bowl of bharwa karela is about 11% of the daily energy requirement of a sedentary adult man and 14% of a sedentary adult woman's (ICMR-NIN, 2020).

These figures are from the Indian Nutrient Databank (INDB), which calculates each dish from a standard recipe using Indian food composition data. They describe that recipe and that serving: a larger portion, or more oil, ghee or sugar, gives more. Source: Vijayakumar A, Dubasi HB, Awasthi A, Jaacks LM. 02The number

What this figure covers

The figure is for dry stuffed karela, the kind that is slit, salted, filled with a spice masala and fried until dark. The recipe uses 80 g of bitter gourd and 1 tablespoon plus 10 g of oil, and counts that as one bowl. In practice that is not much karela, so it is a modest serving of the vegetable and a generous one of oil. A katori at home may hold less, and a cook who drains the karela after frying, or bakes it, will serve far less fat than this recipe assumes.

No other sabzi in this comparison is so completely defined by its cooking fat. Fat supplies 93% of the energy, carbohydrate 5% and protein 2%. The karela brings 2.6 g of carbohydrate, 3.2 g of fibre and almost no energy; the 23.7 g of fat is the frying oil. That is how a vegetable as light as bitter gourd ends up at 231 kcal, above baingan bharta at 212 kcal and level with palak paneer at 230 kcal, while offering 1.4 g of protein, the least of the 22 dishes.

03The recipe behind it

What goes into one serving

The recipe INDB analysed makes 1 bowl. These are its main ingredients; spices, salt and water are left out.

04What moves it

What changes the number

  • 01

    Oil for frying

This is nearly the whole figure. A teaspoon of oil weighs about 5 g and carries about 44 kcal, and the recipe uses 1 tablespoon plus 10 g for 80 g of karela. One teaspoon more makes the bowl 275 kcal.

  • 02

    Fried, pan-cooked or baked

Stuffed karela is traditionally shallow-fried or deep-fried so that it crisps and keeps for days. Cooking it covered in a little oil, or baking it after brushing with oil, changes the energy more than any change to the stuffing could.

  • 03

    What the stuffing contains

The recipe's filling is spices only, which the figure treats as negligible. Fillings with onion, besan, peanuts, fennel and jaggery or amchur are common, and besan, peanuts and jaggery add energy of their own.

  • 04

    How much is eaten

Bharwa karela is intense, and many people eat one piece as a relish, not a bowlful. Half the recipe's bowl is about 116 kcal, and a single piece is less again.

06On the plate

In a meal and in a day

One bowl amounts to about 11% of a sedentary man's daily energy requirement and 14% of a woman's, nearly all of it as fat. It adds almost no protein (1.4 g) and little starch, so it does nothing for the filling parts of a meal; it is there for taste. Treat it as a condiment-sized side with dal, roti and a second, lighter vegetable. Two bowls would bring 462 kcal and 47.4 g of fat, which is a great deal for a side dish.

Ways to keep it lighter

  • Salt the slit karela, rest it and squeeze out the juice so it needs less frying to mellow.
  • Cook the stuffed karela covered on low heat in 2 teaspoons of oil, turning now and then, instead of frying.
  • Bake or air-fry the stuffed karela after brushing it lightly with oil.
  • Drain fried karela on paper before serving, and eat one piece as a side.
07Worth knowing

Before you rely on the number

Karela is widely believed to help with blood sugar. These figures cannot speak to that; what they show is a bowl with 2.6 g of carbohydrate and 23.7 g of fat, made from karela that is salted before it is stuffed. Nobody should adjust diabetes medicines or portions on the strength of eating karela: that is a decision for a doctor or dietitian. For everyone else, the oil and the salt are the points to watch.

Food composition is general information, not a diet plan. Anyone managing a medical condition should plan their diet with a doctor or a registered dietitian.

08Questions

Bharwa Karela: common questions

How many calories are in 2 bowls of bharwa karela?

Two bowls would be about 462 kcal, with 2.8 g of protein, 5.2 g of carbohydrate and 47.4 g of fat. Three bowls are 693 kcal. Nearly all of it is frying oil, so karela that is pan-cooked or baked with less oil will be well below these numbers.

Is bharwa karela good for weight loss?

Bitter gourd is very light, but this dish is not: 231 kcal a bowl, with 93% of the energy from oil and almost no protein to make it filling. A version cooked with a couple of teaspoons of oil is a different proposition. Eating karela does not cause weight loss; what counts is total intake, and fried karela adds to it.

Why does bharwa karela have so many calories?

Because of how it is cooked. The recipe fries 80 g of bitter gourd in 1 tablespoon plus 10 g of oil, and the gourd absorbs it. The result is 23.7 g of fat in a bowl. Bharwa bhindi, stuffed in a similar way but cooked with much less oil, comes to 104 kcal.

How much protein is in bharwa karela?

About 1.4 g in a bowl, the lowest of the 22 sabzis compared here and only 2% of its energy. It is a side for flavour. The protein of the meal has to come from dal, curd, paneer, eggs or another main dish.
