Calories in Aloo Bonda
One aloo bonda has about 100 kcal. ICMR-NIN's Dietary Guidelines for Indians give approximately 200 kcal for 2 bondas, so one is counted as half. The guideline is an estimate and does not state how big the bonda is; it also gives no protein, carbohydrate or fat figure. Inside a pav, as vada pav, the total is higher.
Nutrition in 1 aloo bonda
| Nutrient | 1 aloo bonda | 2 aloo bondas |
|---|---|---|
| Energy (approximate) | 100 kcal | 200 kcal |
1 aloo bonda is about 5% of the daily energy requirement of a sedentary adult man and 6% of a sedentary adult woman's (ICMR-NIN, 2020).
This is the approximate calorie value given in ICMR-NIN's Dietary Guidelines for Indians. The guidelines do not state the size of the piece and give no protein, carbohydrate or fat figure, so none is shown. Source: ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition. What this figure covers
The figure comes from ICMR-NIN's list of approximate calorific values, where 2 bondas are put at about 200 kcal. No weight is given for the bonda. In kitchens and at stalls the potato ball can be the size of a lemon or the size of a small orange, and the Mumbai batata vada made for vada pav is usually on the large side. The 100 kcal is for the bonda by itself: no pav, no dry garlic chutney, no fried chilli. Half a bonda is about 50 kcal and three bondas are about 300 kcal.
An aloo bonda is a ball of mashed potato, cooked with onion, green peas and a tadka, dipped in besan batter and deep-fried. The potato centre is already cooked and fairly moist, so it takes up little oil itself. The batter is where the frying oil goes: it forms a shell around the ball, and the thicker and more porous that shell, the more oil it holds. Potato and besan supply starch, the besan adds a little protein, and the oil, being the most concentrated source of calories, supplies a share out of proportion to its weight.
What goes into one serving
A standard recipe uses these main ingredients. Amounts are not shown, because the calorie figure above is not calculated from them.
| Ingredient |
|---|
| Green peas (fresh) |
| Potato |
| Onion |
| Besan |
| Oil |
What changes the number
- 01
The size of the potato ball
A bigger ball means more potato and a larger surface to coat and fry. The guideline gives no size, so a large street-style batata vada should be counted above 100 kcal. Compare by the amount of potato that went into each one.
- 02
Thickness of the besan coat
A thin batter that just veils the potato fries into a light shell. A thick, heavy coat adds besan and soaks up more oil. One extra teaspoon of oil in the shell would take a bonda from 100 kcal to about 144 kcal.
- 03
The tadka in the filling
The potato is seasoned with mustard seeds, curry leaves, onion and chilli fried in oil before it is shaped. A generous tadka adds oil to the filling before the bonda ever reaches the kadhai.
- 04
Pav and chutneys
As vada pav, the bonda sits in a bread roll, often buttered, with a dry garlic chutney that contains coconut or peanuts. The roll is refined-flour bread and has to be counted on top of the bonda. Coconut chutney, served in the south, adds fat as well.

In a meal and in a day
One aloo bonda is about 5% of a sedentary man's daily energy requirement and 6% of a woman's. Two with tea are about 200 kcal. In this set of 10 fried snacks it is seventh lightest, between a piece of fish fry at 95 kcal and a sabudana vada at 105 kcal. As a meal it is thin: potato in a besan shell has little protein and few vegetables. When a vada pav is lunch, adding a glass of chaas or a bowl of sprouts does more good than adding a second one.
Ways to keep it lighter
- Make the batter thin so the coat is a light shell and not a thick crust.
- Cook the potato balls in a lightly oiled appe pan, turning them until crisp.
- Add extra peas, carrot or beans to the potato mixture.
- Have the bonda without butter on the pav, or skip the pav.
- Eat it with green chutney and stop at one or two.
Before you rely on the number
The 100 kcal is approximate and covers the bonda alone. The combination most people actually eat, a large vada in a pav with chutneys and a fried chilli, is a bigger item than the guideline describes, and it is mostly starch and fat. Stall oil is often reused through the day. People managing diabetes or blood pressure should take advice from their doctor or dietitian about how often such snacks fit.
Food composition is general information, not a diet plan. Anyone managing a medical condition should plan their diet with a doctor or a registered dietitian.
Aloo Bonda: common questions
How many calories are in a vada pav?
ICMR-NIN's figure covers only the bonda: about 100 kcal each. It does not give a figure for the pav, butter or chutneys, so a complete vada pav cannot be stated from this source. Expect it to be well above the bonda alone, since it adds a bread roll and usually some fat.
How many calories are in 2 aloo bondas?
About 200 kcal, which is the quantity ICMR-NIN's approximate figure is given for. Three come to about 300 kcal. The guideline does not specify the size of the bonda, so large ones should be counted as more.
Is aloo bonda the same as batata vada?
Yes, in essence. Both are spiced mashed potato balls coated in besan batter and deep-fried. Batata vada is the Maharashtrian name and is typically flavoured with garlic and ginger; bonda is the south Indian name and often includes onion and peas. The guideline figure applies to this type of snack.
Can aloo bonda be made with less oil?
Yes. An appe or paniyaram pan cooks the coated balls with a few drops of oil in each hollow, and an air fryer works if the batter is thick enough to cling. Both avoid most of the oil of deep frying. No guideline figure is given for these versions.
