NNWA publishes the name and qualifications of everyone who writes and checks its material. You can see the full teaching team on the faculty page.

This page deals only with entry rules, read on each programme's own page on 1 November 2026. The wider route to a hospital post is set out in how to become a clinical dietitian, and the two course names are untangled in clinical nutrition against dietetics. If your background is fitness rather than health care, start with personal trainer certification in India instead. NNWA publishes this page and sells one of the certificate courses listed, so read its row with that in mind.
Do I need a medical background for a clinical dietetics course?
You need a science background for most university programmes, not a medical one. Lady Irwin College's four-year Bachelors in Nutrition and Dietetics asks for Biology, Physics and Chemistry at Class 12, and SNDT Women's University's MSc in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics asks for a nutrition-related degree after science at school. A medical degree appears in some rules as one accepted option among several: the University of Delhi's PG diploma names MBBS and BSc Nursing beside home science and life sciences. So a health degree can open a door, but it is not the only key, and it does not fit every lock.
Entry rules, programme by programme
The table lists what each provider's own page states, alphabetically and with no ranking. Rules change with each admission cycle, so read the current notice before you apply. University degrees and private certificates sit side by side here only because readers compare them. They do not lead to the same places, and the second column tells you who awards each one. For how the bachelor's degree itself is structured, see the BSc in nutrition and dietetics guide.
| Provider and programme | Level and who awards it | Entry rule on the provider's page |
|---|---|---|
| GIHS: Nutrition and Dietetics | Online and distance certificate, self-paced; GIHS | All science graduates, MBBS, BDS, BHMS, BAMS, BPT, BUMS, nursing and staff of hospitals and healthcare organisations; also open to any graduate and working professionals |
| IGNOU: MSc Dietetics and Food Service Management | Master's by distance, 24 to 48 months; IGNOU | BSc Home Science with food and nutrition or dietetics; or a PG Diploma in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition; or BSc (Hons) in Home Science, Food Science, Zoology, Microbiology, Biochemistry or Pharmacy, or MBBS or BHMS, along with IGNOU's DNHE, CNCC-1 or CFN |
| Lady Irwin College: Bachelors in Nutrition and Dietetics | Four-year degree; University of Delhi | 10+2 with Biology, Physics and Chemistry at 50 per cent, and English; merit on 10+2 marks |
| Lady Irwin College: MSc Food and Nutrition | Master's; University of Delhi | Bachelor's in Home Science, Food and Nutrition, or Nutrition and Dietetics, or the PG diploma below, with Nutritional Biochemistry compulsory and three more listed subjects; CUET (PG) |
| Lady Irwin College: PG Diploma in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition | One year with a three-month hospital internship; University of Delhi | BSc Home Science, Food Technology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Nursing or Life Sciences, or MBBS, with 55 per cent overall and 50 per cent in any four listed nutrition subjects |
| Manipal College of Health Professions: Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (Hons) | Degree; MAHE | 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, English and Biology, with at least 50 per cent aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Biology |
| Manipal College of Health Professions: Masters in Nutrition and Dietetics | Master's; MAHE | Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (Hons), BSc Nutrition and Dietetics (Hons) or BSc Food and Nutrition in regular mode; Institutional Test |
| Medvarsity: Advanced Certificate in Clinical Nutrition | Six months online; Medvarsity | MD, MS, DNB, BDS, MBBS, dietitians, nutritionists, Ayush practitioners and nursing professionals |
| Medvarsity: Fellowship in Clinical Nutrition | Online with a one-month hospital observership; Medvarsity | Nutritionists, dietitians, MBBS, MD, MS, DNB, BDS, MDS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, BSMS, BNYS and other healthcare professionals, after its Certificate and Advanced Certificate |
| NNWA: Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics | Three months online at advanced level; NNWA's own certificate | States no degree condition; written for nutrition and dietetics students, nurses, health workers, wellness coaches, dietitians, fitness professionals and graduates |
| SNDT Women's University: MSc Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics | Two-year master's, Juhu campus; SNDT | 10+2 with science, then graduation in nutrition-related subjects at 50 per cent or B grade; Life Science, Biochemistry and Physiology graduates need 60 per cent or A grade and eight relevant credits; commerce, arts and pure science not eligible |
| SNDT Women's University: PG Diploma in Dietetics | One year on campus, Pune; SNDT | BSc in foods, nutrition or food technology fields at 45 per cent or B grade, or pure sciences such as Life Sciences, Biochemistry or Physiology at 50 per cent; entrance test and interview |
One discrepancy is worth raising with the department. SNDT's programme page gives the percentages above, while its 2023 eligibility document for the science faculty gives 50 per cent or B grade and limits pure science graduates to 20 per cent of seats. Ask which figure applies to your year. The University of Delhi's PG diploma rule comes from its Institute of Home Economics page, and Lady Irwin College lists the same programme.
Three patterns behind the entry rules
First, bachelor's degrees test your school subjects. Lady Irwin and Manipal both name Physics, Chemistry and Biology, so the decision was largely made in Class 11. Second, postgraduate rules test your papers more than your degree's title. Delhi counts marks in any four listed subjects, its MSc makes Nutritional Biochemistry compulsory, and SNDT asks biochemistry and physiology graduates for eight relevant credits. Your marksheet decides this, so read it subject by subject before you pay an application fee.
Third, private certificates set their rules by audience rather than by subject. Medvarsity's course lists name health professionals. GIHS names many of the same degrees and then opens its course to any graduate. GIHS's own recognition page says it should not be viewed as a replacement for a university qualification, which is a useful sentence to keep in mind when comparing the two columns.
What can a reader from arts or commerce do?
A reader from arts or commerce cannot enter any university programme in the table today, but can study nutrition at diploma or certificate level straight away, or start a relevant degree from the beginning. SNDT's MSc rule says so in terms: commerce, arts and pure science students are not eligible. The useful question is what you want to do with the study, because non-clinical work and a hospital post need very different plans. Studying nutrition without a science background covers the first in depth.
After Class 12, IGNOU's Diploma in Nutrition and Health Education asks for 10+2 or equivalent and teaches in English and Hindi. NNWA's Diploma in Nutrition, Dietetics and Public Health asks for Class 12 in any stream. If you already hold a BA or BCom, GIHS says its course is open to any graduate, and NNWA's Post Graduation Diploma asks for a degree in any discipline. Each of these teaches the subject. None adds the science papers that a university postgraduate rule counts, and IGNOU's MSc pairs its diploma with a named BSc, not with a BA or BCom.
That shapes the work you can take afterwards. A certificate or skill diploma holder coaches healthy people and refers medical cases, because only doctors and qualified dietitians plan diets to treat disease. If a hospital dietitian post is what you want, you need a relevant bachelor's degree first. Where a rule names science at Class 12, ask the admissions office in writing whether any later science qualification would count, rather than assuming either way.
A plan from arts or commerce
Name the work you want
Write down whether you want to coach healthy clients or work on hospital wards. The two answers lead to different courses.
Read two entry rules against your marksheet
Take one degree rule and one diploma rule from the table and mark what you meet and what you lack.
Try the subject cheaply
Start with a low-cost course or free university material to find out whether physiology and biochemistry hold your interest.
Commit to one route
Choose a skill qualification for non-clinical work, or a relevant bachelor's degree for the hospital route, and plan the years that route takes.
What does a doctor start with?
A doctor starts with more open doors than almost anyone, and a course adds nutrition knowledge rather than permission, since diets to treat disease already fall within medical practice. MBBS is named on the University of Delhi's PG diploma, on IGNOU's MSc alongside a nutrition course, and on Medvarsity's and GIHS's certificates. IGNOU also names BHMS, and the certificate courses list BDS and Ayush degrees. Delhi's condition still applies: 50 per cent in any four listed subjects, so check how physiology and biochemistry on your own transcript read against that list.
IGNOU's rule has a practical detail for a working doctor. Its page permits simultaneous admission for the CFN or CNCC course, so you need not finish a separate diploma before starting the MSc. Medvarsity's Fellowship asks for its Certificate and Advanced Certificate first, so count all three when you weigh the time. Manipal's and SNDT's rules name no medical degree, so do not assume entry there without asking.
What do nurses, pharmacists and physiotherapists start with?
Nurses start with the widest choice of the three, pharmacists have one named university route, and physiotherapists are named only at certificate level in the rules read for this page. The table sets this out, degree by degree. Being absent from a rule does not always mean refusal, so write to the department with your transcript. Being named does not mean automatic entry either, because the marks and subject conditions still apply to you.
| Background | Named on | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Doctor (MBBS) | Delhi PG diploma, IGNOU MSc with a nutrition course, GIHS, Medvarsity | Marks in four listed subjects at Delhi |
| Dentist or Ayush graduate | GIHS and Medvarsity; IGNOU MSc names BHMS only | Whether your degree is on the list for that course |
| Nurse | Delhi PG diploma (BSc Nursing), GIHS, Medvarsity; NNWA's page names nurses | A nursing diploma is not named on Delhi's rule, so ask |
| Pharmacist | IGNOU MSc (BSc Hons in Pharmacy, with a nutrition course); GIHS through any graduate | How IGNOU reads a BPharm; its regional centre page words this differently |
| Physiotherapist | GIHS (BPT) | No university rule above names physiotherapy; Medvarsity's Fellowship says other healthcare professionals, so ask |
For a pharmacist or physiotherapist, the sensible first question is whether you want to change profession or add to the one you have. Adding to it usually means a certificate-level course used within your existing scope, with medical cases staying with the treating doctor or dietitian. Changing profession means a university route, and that may mean a relevant bachelor's degree. The clinical nutrition and dietetics comparison helps once you know which you want.
The Registered Dietitian route is the Indian Dietetic Association's
Registered Dietitian is a credential of the Indian Dietetic Association, and its eligibility page looks at your subjects and training rather than whether your first degree was medical. It asks for IDA life membership before the internship and a graduate degree in food and nutrition, or another graduate degree with at least four nutrition-related subjects. It then asks for a PG diploma or MSc in the field. Finally it asks for a six-month continuous internship at a hospital on IDA's list, or five years as a full-time clinical dietitian in a multispecialty hospital.
The same page says graduation must be full time, with postgraduation as a day scholar or by distance, from UGC-recognised universities. So a nurse or doctor cannot assume that the first degree counts, and a certificate from any provider in the table does not meet the condition. Read what becoming a dietitian in India involves for the whole route, then write to IDA with your transcript. Ask how your degree reads against those subjects and what its current arrangements for the examination are, before you plan years around it.
Who does a certificate-level clinical course suit?
A certificate-level clinical course suits someone who already has a clinical or nutrition role and wants structured knowledge to use within it. That means a nurse counselling patients with diabetes, a doctor who had little nutrition teaching, a dietetics student or intern wanting more case practice, or a nutrition coach learning when and how to work alongside a treating doctor. The test is simple: if you could describe your job without the course, the course can add to it.
Who should look elsewhere?
If this would be your first qualification and you want a hospital dietitian post, look elsewhere than any certificate in the table, including NNWA's, and start with a relevant degree. Look elsewhere too if your plan is to manage disease through diet without a clinical qualification, because no short course gives you that role. If you plan to work overseas, read how an Indian qualification is evaluated abroad before enrolling anywhere, since overseas regulators look at degrees and placements.
NNWA's clinical course on the same test
NNWA's Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics course is a three-month online course at advanced level, taught in English and Hindi with mentor support. It carries NNWA's own certificate. It states no degree condition, and its page names nurses, health workers, students, dietitians and fitness professionals among its audience. It is not a degree and gives no Registered Dietitian eligibility, hospital dietitian post or right to treat disease. To compare it with a named alternative, see NNWA and Medvarsity for clinical nutrition.
A reader starting from no background often does better with a broader qualification than with a clinical specialism. NNWA's Diploma asks for Class 12 in any stream, and NNWA's Diploma beside other diplomas sets its published facts against named alternatives. Medvarsity and GIHS are compared directly in their own article.
Your next step, by where you stand
From Class 12 science, read the bachelor's rules above and apply for the coming cycle. From a science degree, go through your marksheet and count the listed papers before choosing between a PG diploma and an MSc. From arts or commerce, decide first whether you want coaching work or a hospital post, because that decides everything after it. If you are simply curious, do not buy anything yet: study a free university module for a month and see whether you still want to continue.
If you are a doctor, nurse, pharmacist or physiotherapist, write to one university department with your transcript before paying for a certificate. Its answer tells you what the longer route would involve, and a certificate may still be the right choice once you can compare the two.
