Sports and Fitness Courses Compared: Which One to Take
NNWA's sports and fitness courses divide into those that teach you to train people and those that teach you to feed people who train. The training courses run from a beginner gym-floor course to advanced programming and athlete conditioning. The sorting question is whether you want to coach movement or nutrition, and whether you have instructed anyone before.
How these courses divide
The training courses form a ladder. Gym Instructor is the beginner rung: equipment, form, inductions and floor safety. Group Fitness Instructor is intermediate and teaches class design, cueing and managing a room. Personal training comes in a pair that is easy to confuse. Advanced Diploma in Personal Training with Sports Nutrition is the online course, and it expects instructing or training experience. Personal Training & Sports Nutrition is the in-person course, held in Kolkata, where committed beginners learn to coach the major lifts under supervision. Sports Conditioning sits at the far end, for coaches of athletes and teams.
The nutrition courses are all intermediate and differ by client. Fitness Nutrition Specialist is written for trainers whose gym clients want fat loss or muscle gain, and it includes habit coaching. Sports Nutrition is organised around a sport: training load, competition, recovery and sport-specific plans. Women's Sports & Fitness Nutrition is about fuelling active women, with the menstrual cycle, hormones and under-fuelling at its centre. Trainers and coaches appear in the audience of all of them, and each says some prior familiarity helps.
Prenatal & Postnatal Fitness stands a little apart as a specialisation for instructors who already teach, and it is the course here that touches a medical situation most directly: each expecting or new mother trains only with clearance from her own doctor. The same boundary runs through the whole area. These courses prepare you to coach healthy, active people. An injury goes to a physiotherapist or doctor, and a clinical dietary need goes to a doctor or dietitian.

The course for each goal
You are new to fitness and hope to work in a gym.
Gym Instructor
Gym Instructor is the beginner course and needs no prior qualification. It covers equipment, form correction, member inductions, floor safety and simple workout plans, and it is described as the foundation many learners carry into personal training.
You want to plan and lead group or functional-training classes.
Group Fitness Instructor
Group Fitness Instructor teaches class sequencing, cueing for mixed ability, functional circuits with minimal equipment and group management. It is intermediate, so some exercise familiarity helps, but it builds first-time instructors up from the ground.
You can be in Kolkata and want hands-on personal training practice.
Personal Training & Sports Nutrition
Personal Training & Sports Nutrition is the in-person course in Kolkata: the major lifts are coached under supervision, alongside programme design, client assessment, sports nutrition and CPR and AED response. It is designed to bring committed beginners to coaching competence.
You already instruct or train and want advanced programming, taught online.
Advanced Diploma in Personal Training with Sports Nutrition
Advanced Diploma in Personal Training with Sports Nutrition covers periodised programme design, strength and conditioning, movement screens, biomechanics and client behaviour change, with supportive nutrition. It is written for people who already train or instruct, and it advises anyone without that experience to build a foundation first.
You coach athletes or a team and want performance programming.
Sports Conditioning
Sports Conditioning is an advanced course in testing and developing speed, agility, power and endurance, and in periodising a year around a competitive season. It expects coaching experience and leaves injury diagnosis and rehabilitation to a physiotherapist or doctor.
You are a trainer and gym clients keep asking you about diet.
Fitness Nutrition Specialist
Fitness Nutrition Specialist gives trainers the nutrition side of the job: calorie and macronutrient targets, plans for fat loss and muscle gain in healthy adults, fuelling around sessions, supplements judged on evidence, and coaching eating habits that last.
You advise people who compete and want food plans built for their sport.
Sports Nutrition
Sports Nutrition fits energy and macronutrient intake to the demands of training, times food around sessions and competition, covers recovery, hydration and supplements, and finishes with sport-specific planning. It suits nutritionists specialising in sport as well as coaches and athletes.
You coach active women, or are one, and want female-specific fuelling.
Women's Sports & Fitness Nutrition
Women's Sports & Fitness Nutrition explains how female physiology, the menstrual cycle and hormones affect fuelling, how to recognise under-fuelling, and how needs shift across life stages. It is for healthy, active women; conditions such as PCOS stay with a doctor or dietitian.
You already teach fitness and want to train expecting and new mothers.
Prenatal & Postnatal Fitness
Prenatal & Postnatal Fitness is a specialisation in adapting exercise through pregnancy, looking after the core and pelvic floor, and rebuilding fitness after the birth. It builds on existing teaching experience, and it makes a doctor's clearance for every client part of the process.
A starting point and a sensible order
A newcomer to fitness work should start with Gym Instructor, the only beginner-level course in the group, or with Personal Training & Sports Nutrition if a hands-on route in Kolkata is possible. From the gym floor, the next step is either Group Fitness Instructor for class teaching or Advanced Diploma in Personal Training with Sports Nutrition for one-to-one coaching. A nutrition course fits well after that: Fitness Nutrition Specialist for gym clients, Sports Nutrition for people who compete. The more specific courses come last, once there is experience to build on: Sports Conditioning for athletes, Prenatal & Postnatal Fitness for mothers, and Women's Sports & Fitness Nutrition for active women.
NNWA courses are private skill courses. They prepare you to educate and support people, not to diagnose, treat or prescribe, and completing one does not confer the Registered Dietitian credential.

Sports & Fitness courses: common questions
Where should someone with no fitness background start?
Gym Instructor. It is pitched at beginner level and no earlier qualification is required. Personal Training & Sports Nutrition, taught in person in Kolkata, is also designed to take committed beginners through, though gym experience helps. The advanced online courses advise a foundation first.
Should I study training or nutrition first?
Start with whichever you will be asked to do first. Someone heading for a gym floor needs instructing skills before nutrition, and the nutrition courses here are intermediate and say some training or nutrition familiarity helps. A nutritionist who already advises clients can go straight to Sports Nutrition without a training course.
Which of these courses are online and which are in person?
All but one are taught online, with live sessions and recordings. The exception is Personal Training & Sports Nutrition, which is run in person, on a gym floor in Kolkata. The online personal training route, for people with experience, is Advanced Diploma in Personal Training with Sports Nutrition.
Do any of these courses cover injuries or medical conditions?
Not as something you manage. Sports Conditioning teaches injury prevention and leaves diagnosis and rehabilitation to a physiotherapist or doctor. The nutrition courses are for healthy, active people and pass a clinical dietary problem to a doctor or dietitian. Prenatal & Postnatal Fitness requires medical clearance for every client.
