Health Coaching Courses Compared: Which One to Take

NNWA's health and wellness coaching courses divide into general coaching and coaching for a particular kind of work. Wellness & Lifestyle Coach and Certified Health & Wellness Coach train general coaches; Weight Loss Coach and Corporate Wellness prepare you for fat-loss clients and for workplaces. The sorting question is who you will be coaching, and towards what.

01The area

How these courses divide

The general pair covers the same territory with different weighting. Wellness & Lifestyle Coach is open to all levels and gives separate topics to everyday nutrition, movement, and sleep and stress, with habit change and consultation skills beside them. Certified Health & Wellness Coach is pitched at intermediate level and gives most of its topics to the coaching itself: behaviour-change science, client conversations, goals, accountability, ethics and boundaries. One teaches more of what to coach, the other more of how.

The other pair is defined by setting. Weight Loss Coach is a specialisation for coaches whose clients want sustainable fat loss; it adds the science of fat loss, calorie-aware Indian meal planning, plateaus, relapse and emotional eating to behaviour-change coaching. Corporate Wellness moves the work from a client to an organisation: designing multi-week programmes, running workshops and challenges for employees, and reporting engagement to employers and HR teams. It is a beginner course and needs no prior wellness qualification.

All four stay inside a coaching scope. They prepare you to support behaviour change and general wellbeing in people who are broadly healthy, in a consultation or in a workplace session. None covers clinical advice. A client or employee with a medical condition is referred or signposted to a doctor or dietitian, and the coach's part is education and support alongside that care.

04Where to begin

A starting point and a sensible order

Someone with no background should begin with Wellness & Lifestyle Coach, which is open to all levels and teaches the lifestyle subjects along with the coaching. Someone who already works in nutrition or fitness can begin with Certified Health & Wellness Coach for the coaching method. From either, the next step is a direction: Weight Loss Coach if clients want fat loss, Corporate Wellness if the work is with employers and teams. HR staff are the exception and can start with Corporate Wellness directly, since it is a beginner course that needs no prior wellness qualification. Taking both general courses is rarely worthwhile, because they share so much.

NNWA courses are private skill courses. They prepare you to educate and support people, not to diagnose, treat or prescribe, and completing one does not confer the Registered Dietitian credential.

06Questions

Health & Wellness Coaching courses: common questions

Which coaching course is right for a complete beginner?

Wellness & Lifestyle Coach for coaching individuals, since it is open to all levels and teaches nutrition, movement, sleep and stress along with the coaching. Corporate Wellness is also a beginner course, for people whose work will be inside organisations. Certified Health & Wellness Coach accepts motivated beginners but is pitched at intermediate level.

Do I need a general coaching course before Weight Loss Coach?

No. Weight Loss Coach requires no formal background, although experience in fitness or nutrition helps, and it teaches behaviour change coaching as a topic of its own. A general course first gives a wider base, which matters if you expect clients with goals other than weight.

Is there a longer programme in the same field?

Yes. Diploma in Health & Wellness Coaching is a full diploma that teaches a nutrition foundation before coaching practice. It sits with the diploma programmes, outside this group of short courses, and suits someone who wants the nutrition science and the coaching in a single route.

Can a coach from these courses advise clients with medical conditions?

Not on the condition itself. All four courses train coaching for general wellbeing and behaviour change, and each tells you to refer or signpost clinical needs. A client with diabetes, for example, is coached on habits alongside their doctor or dietitian, who remain responsible for the medical and dietary management.
