The NNWA journal

Health coaching is one of the fastest growing roles in Indian wellness, and one of the least regulated. That makes the certification you choose matter more, not less.

Health Coach Certification in India: How to Choose One

Ask ten people what a health coach does and you will get ten answers. Some picture a personal trainer who also talks about food. Some picture a nutritionist without a degree. Some picture a motivational speaker. The better answer is that a health coach helps a person change their habits, using a specific set of conversation and behaviour-change skills, and usually works alongside the people who set the medical or dietary plan rather than replacing them.

NNWA publishes the name and qualifications of everyone who writes and checks its material. You can see the full teaching team on the faculty page.

This guide helps you choose a certification that teaches those skills properly. NNWA runs a health coach course, so its view is not neutral. The checks below work on any provider.

What does a health coach actually do?

A health coach helps someone close the gap between knowing what is good for them and actually doing it. Most people already know they should sleep more, move more and eat fewer biscuits. What they lack is a plan they believe in, someone to review it with, and a way to recover when they slip. A coach uses structured conversations, small goals and regular check-ins to build that. The core skill is listening well enough that the client finds their own reasons to change, which is harder than it sounds and entirely teachable.

Is there an official health coach certification in India?

No. India has no national register or licensing body for health coaches, so any provider can issue a certificate with the words "certified health coach". In the United States, the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching runs a board certification that requires an approved training programme, assessed practical skills and an exam, and it is the nearest thing to a professional standard internationally. For Indian practice, what matters is whether your training included real coaching practice that someone assessed.

What should a health coach certification teach?

The foundations of coaching, the science of behaviour change, how to run a client conversation, how to set goals and hold someone accountable, whole-person wellness across sleep, stress, movement and food, and how to build a coaching practice. NNWA's Certified Health and Wellness Coach course covers these areas over two months at an intermediate level, costs 14,999 rupees reduced from 21,999, and offers EMI from 1,250 rupees a month. Just as important is teaching on scope: what a coach should not do, and when to refer.

How should a health coach course assess you?

By watching you coach. Knowledge tests have a place, but the skill is conversational, so the assessment should include recorded or observed coaching sessions with feedback against a clear standard: did you listen more than you talked, did the client set the goal or did you, did you check what got in the way last week. Ask any provider how many practice sessions you complete, who observes them, and what feedback you receive. A course with no observed practice is teaching you about coaching, not how to coach.

What is the difference between a health coach and a nutritionist?

A nutritionist designs what someone should eat. A health coach helps them keep doing it. The skills overlap, and many practitioners hold both, but the training emphasises different things. If you want to write meal plans and adjust them for health conditions, nutrition training is the core. If you are drawn to the conversation that keeps people motivated for months, coaching is. Our comparison of a health coach and a nutritionist goes into the practical differences.

What can a certified health coach not do?

Diagnose, prescribe, give detailed medical nutrition therapy, or act as a therapist. A coach working with someone who has diabetes supports them in following the plan their doctor and dietitian set. A coach who notices signs of depression, an eating disorder or a medical problem refers the person on. These limits are not a weakness of the role. They are what makes coaches trusted by doctors, who increasingly see value in someone helping patients stick to advice between appointments.

Who hires health coaches in India?

Corporate wellness programmes are a growing source of work, since companies want someone to run employee health challenges and one-to-one sessions. Health apps and digital programmes hire coaches to support users by chat and call. Gyms and wellness studios add coaching to memberships. Diabetes and weight management programmes use coaches for follow-up. And many coaches work independently, often combining coaching with another qualification such as nutrition, yoga or fitness. Our guide to becoming a wellness coach in India covers the career side in more detail.

Health coach or wellness and lifestyle coach: which course?

The names overlap across the market. At NNWA, the two-month health coach course centres on coaching skills and behaviour change, while the three-month Wellness and Lifestyle Coach course at 17,999 rupees adds more content on everyday nutrition, movement, sleep and stress. If you already have a nutrition or fitness qualification and need the coaching method, the shorter course fits. If you are starting fresh and want broader wellness content alongside the coaching, the longer one does.

Is a health coach certification worth it on its own?

It can be, if you have a strong background in something else. A nurse, a physiotherapist, a yoga teacher or a fitness trainer who adds coaching skills often becomes far more effective with clients. Someone with no health background who takes only a coaching course may find it harder to get work, because clients and employers usually want a coach who also understands the subject. Pairing coaching with a nutrition foundation is one of the most common and effective combinations.

How much do health coaching courses cost?

Short introductions and recorded courses cost least. Structured courses with live teaching and observed practice cost more, because each learner takes real teaching time. International certifications aimed at the US board standard cost considerably more and are designed for people planning to work in that system. For work in India, the question is whether the course gives you enough supervised practice to coach confidently, not whether it carries a foreign name. The only fee stated as fact here is NNWA's, and the fees and EMI page explains what it includes.

What should you ask before you pay?

How many coaching practice sessions will I complete, and who observes them? Is the assessment based on real coaching or only on written tests? Who teaches the course, and do they coach clients themselves? What does the course say about referral and scope? Is there a community or supervision after the course ends? The last question matters because coaching skills develop through practice over months, and a course that ends with no support leaves you to learn the hardest parts alone.

A realistic start after certifying

Coach five people for free or at a low fee, with their consent, and record what happened: what each wanted, what they changed, what got in the way. Ask for honest feedback, not testimonials. Offer a structured four or eight week programme rather than open-ended sessions, since a clear beginning and end is easier to sell and easier to measure. Within a few months you will have evidence of your coaching, which is what a corporate buyer or a referring doctor will want to see.

The first few months after you certify

Nobody buys coaching from a certificate. They buy it from evidence that you have coached, which takes a few months to assemble.

  1. Coach five people, free or cheaply

With their consent, and with a clear beginning and end rather than an open-ended arrangement.

  2. Record what actually happened

What each person wanted, what they changed, and what got in the way. That record is worth more later than any certificate is.

  3. Ask for honest feedback, not testimonials

The useful sentence is the one about what did not work. Testimonials tell you nothing you can act on.

  4. Package it as a structured programme

A four or eight week block is easier to sell and easier to measure than sessions sold one at a time.

  5. Take the evidence to a buyer

A corporate wellness buyer or a referring doctor wants to see what changed for the people you worked with, which is exactly what you now have.
