01The food

About fenugreek seeds (methi dana)

Fenugreek seeds are the small, hard, mustard-yellow seeds of the methi plant whose leaves are cooked as a green. They are methi in most Indian languages, venthayam in Tamil, menthulu in Telugu, menthe in Kannada and uluva in Malayalam; IFCT 2017 records names in 17 languages. Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat grow most of India's crop.

Raw, the seeds are hard and bitter. Fried briefly in oil, they turn nutty and give depth to sambar, kadhi, vendhaya kuzhambu and mango pickle. A spoonful soaked in the idli and dosa batter helps it ferment and makes the idlis softer. Bengal fries methi in panch phoron, and Punjabi and Gujarati families make methi ladoos with ghee, jaggery and dry fruit for new mothers in the cold months.

06Good to know

Before you plan around it

Fry fenugreek only until it darkens slightly; burnt seeds make a dish harshly bitter. Its soluble fibre may modestly lower blood sugar after meals, so people taking diabetes medicines should tell their doctor before eating soaked seeds daily, to avoid sugar dropping too low. Medicinal doses are best avoided in pregnancy. Fenugreek can make sweat and urine smell faintly of maple syrup, which is harmless, and people allergic to peanuts or chickpeas sometimes react to it too.

Food composition is general information, not a diet plan. Anyone managing a medical condition should plan their diet with a doctor or a registered dietitian.

07Questions

What people ask about fenugreek seeds (methi dana)

Are methi seeds good for diabetes?

Their soluble fibre, part of 47.5 g of fibre per 100 g, slows the absorption of sugar, and some studies show a modest effect on blood sugar. Methi is not a substitute for treatment, and anyone on diabetes medicine should discuss regular use with their doctor.

How much protein is in fenugreek seeds?

IFCT 2017 lists 25.4 g of protein per 100 g of fenugreek seeds, the 2nd highest of all 257 foods in the tables. A teaspoon in cooking adds only a small amount.

Why are methi ladoos given after childbirth?

In Punjab, Gujarat and Rajasthan, methi ladoos made with ghee, jaggery and dry fruit are a traditional food for new mothers. They are rich and filling; a new mother's diet as a whole, and her doctor's advice, matter most.
