NNWA publishes the name and qualifications of everyone who writes and checks its material. You can see the full teaching team on the faculty page.

Course details below were read on the providers' own pages on 1 November 2026, and all of them are listed in the sources. The words are loose: fitness coach, trainer and instructor often describe similar jobs, and a wellness coach can mean a health coach with a wider brief, as the health coach certification guide explains. This article compares the two working lives. The route into wellness coaching in India and the batch's health coach and personal trainer comparison take the neighbouring questions.
What is the practical difference between the two courses?
A fitness course teaches you to assess a body, choose exercises and correct them in person, while a wellness course teaches you to help someone reorganise daily routines. NASM sells both, which makes for a clean comparison. Its Certified Personal Trainer sections include assessment, exercise technique and programme design. Its Certified Wellness Coach sections cover movement, mental and emotional wellbeing, nutrition and coaching. NASM recommends a fitness credential before the wellness course, which tells you it is an addition to training skill and not a shortcut to it.

The working day in each role
A fitness coach's day follows members' free time. Gyms fill before and after office hours, so expect a split day with a quiet middle, on your feet, demonstrating, counting and spotting. Clients may see you several times a week, and your own body is part of the equipment. Studios, society gyms, home visits and online sessions change the place more than the peaks. The site's plan for starting in fitness and nutrition describes what the first year tends to involve.
A wellness coach's day is more seated and more varied: a lunch-hour talk for staff, a step challenge to run, check-ins by phone, a report for HR. Employers keep office hours, so much of it falls in the daytime, with private clients at the edges. Much of the effort is preparation and persuasion that nobody pays for directly. ACE's Health Coach page names gyms, hospitals, public health organisations, major corporations and campuses as places its coaches work, though it is written for an American reader.
What does each course leave out?
A wellness course leaves out hands-on exercise instruction, and a fitness course leaves out most of the work on sleep, stress and routine. The Scope of Practice from the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching says coaches on their own do not provide exercise prescription or instruction. It is an American standard, but it draws the line clearly: do not buy a wellness course hoping to programme squats. In the other direction, K11's CPT syllabus lists basic nutrition as an ancillary session, and K11 sells deeper nutrition separately.
Emergency training differs too. NASM-CPT asks for CPR and AED before its exam, and K11's fee table includes a first aid, CPR and AED session. NASM's CWC page lists no such requirement, though ACE asks for both before its Health Coach exam. Both roles stop at disease. A fitness coach does not rehabilitate an injury, a wellness coach does not treat anxiety, and only doctors and qualified dietitians plan diets to treat disease. Check that any course you shortlist teaches you to refer, and to whom.
How does the money arrive in each role?
Fitness income tends to arrive as many small repeating payments, and wellness income as fewer, larger and less regular ones. No figure appears here, because none of the pages read gives one for India, and nobody can promise you one. A gym trainer usually has a floor wage with personal training sessions on top, limited by the hours members are free and by how long your body holds up. It builds slowly through clients who renew, and it stops when you stop. K11's FAQ offers placement assistance and says it gives no job guarantee.
Corporate wellness pays by the programme, after a slow purchase. A proposal can sit for months, and one lost account can be a large share of your year. The site's guide to how companies scope and buy wellness work covers this. Salaried coach jobs on health apps are steadier, with less say over hours. ACE's and NASM's pages quote American earnings figures, which tell you nothing about Indian pay. Before you buy, work out how many months of low income you can carry.
A one-week test of your days
Course pages describe subjects. This test describes days, and it costs a few hours and some nerve. Treat it as an experiment, and write down how you felt straight after each step, because the feeling fades and the course brochure does not.
Find out which day suits you
Shadow a morning shift
Ask a local gym if you can watch the 6 to 9 am floor on two days. Note the pace, the noise, and how much of the job is correcting form.
Teach one movement
With consent, teach a healthy friend a bodyweight squat from a reliable guide and try to correct it. Notice whether watching a body move holds your attention.
Give one short talk
Offer 20 minutes on sleep to your office, a residents' group or a parents' group. Notice whether you enjoy preparing it and holding the room.
Run two habit conversations
Spend 30 minutes each with two people on a routine they want to change. Ask, do not advise, and follow up a week later.
Score your energy
Mark each activity from 1 to 5 for energy, then for whether you would do it every Monday for a year. The higher pair points to your course.
Check the money
Write down how many months of low income you can carry. If the answer is few, keep your present income while you build either route part-time.
Can a fitness coach move into wellness work later?
Yes, and fitness into wellness is usually the easier direction. A trainer already has people to practise on, and NASM's page assumes that order by recommending a fitness credential before its wellness course. Adding nutrition is a common first step: the site's six-month plan from gym trainer to nutrition coach shows one route. Moving the other way means learning exercise science and passing a practical assessment from scratch, which is entirely possible but is a new qualification and not a top-up.
The person each course suits
A fitness coach course suits someone who likes training, is happy on their feet for long hours, can live with early mornings and late evenings, and enjoys seeing how a person moves change within weeks. A wellness coach course suits someone who prefers talking to demonstrating, is at ease with HR managers and slides, tolerates slow results, and can sit calmly with a client who has not done what they agreed to do. If both describe you, let the test above decide which comes first.
Buyers who should look elsewhere
If you want to fix back pain or rehabilitate injuries, look elsewhere: that is physiotherapy. If you want to work with competitive athletes, compare strength coaching credentials instead. If you want to plan diets for people with diabetes or PCOS, that needs a dietitian's qualification, and neither course here gets you there. If you mostly want to teach yoga, a yoga teacher course will serve you better than either. And if you already run company programmes well, you may need clients and proof more than another certificate.
NNWA under the same test
NNWA sits on both sides, with different limits. On the wellness side, its Wellness and Lifestyle Coach course runs 3 months and Corporate Wellness runs 5 weeks. Both carry NNWA's own certificate only, and the Medhavi Skills University award does not cover them. The Fitness Nutrition Specialist course, also NNWA's own certificate, teaches food for trainers and no exercise instruction. If a company is your target, read whether a corporate wellness certification is worth it before you buy that course alone.
On the fitness side, the Advanced Diploma in Personal Training with Sports Nutrition runs 3 to 4 months online with live classes, and is awarded with Medhavi Skills University, Sikkim, recognised under section 2(f) of the UGC Act and an NCVET-approved awarding body. Being online, it gives you no supervised gym floor, so you need your own. NNWA's in-person Kolkata course and its Gym Instructor course carry NNWA's own certificate only. NNWA has no NCCA-accredited exam. None of this is a degree or lets you treat disease.
Your next step, by situation
If the gym shift energised you and you hold no fitness qualification, phone three gyms you would work at, ask what they require, and buy that. The personal trainer certification routes and the online and classroom comparison will help you shortlist. If the talk and the conversations energised you, take a wellness course and line up one workplace or residents' group to practise with during it. If you are already a trainer, add a short course to your existing work and leave the job where it is.
Buy nothing yet if you skipped the test, if your scores split evenly, or if you are counting on a first corporate contract to pay the rent. Keep your income and give it another month. When you have an answer and NNWA is on your list, its admissions page explains how enrolment works, and a counsellor can go through a syllabus with you. Ask the same questions you would ask anyone else, and be ready to choose another provider if its answer is better for your city or your target job.
