NNWA publishes the name and qualifications of everyone who writes and checks its material. You can see the full teaching team on the faculty page.

The ICF, NBHWC, EMCC, ACE and Indian course details below come from each body's own page, opened on 1 November 2026, and all are listed in the sources. This article narrows one decision. The site's guide to choosing a health coach certification sets out what a good course should assess, and what a health coach does and may not do explains the role itself. NNWA teaches health and wellness coaching and has no life coach course, so weigh its view with that in mind.
What is the real difference between a health coach and a life coach?
The difference is the subject you are paid to know. A health coach works on food, movement, sleep and stress, so needs enough of each to spot a bad idea or a worrying symptom. A life coach works on direction: careers, decisions, confidence, relationships. ICF's guide to becoming a coach lists health and wellness coaching and life coaching as separate paths within one profession. The conversation skills are close. What you must know between the questions is not.
| Point | Health coach benchmark: NBHWC | Life coach benchmark: ICF |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets it | National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching, with an exam developed with the National Board of Medical Examiners | International Coaching Federation. The same credentials cover all coaching subjects, not life coaching alone |
| Credential | NBC-HWC | ACC, PCC or MCC |
| Training asked for | An NBHWC-approved training programme | 60, 125 or 200 hours of coaching education by level, plus 10 hours of mentor coaching |
| Client practice asked for | 50 logged sessions of at least 20 minutes, after the final skills assessment. Paid or pro bono, not with friends, family or classmates | ACC: 100 hours, 8 clients, 75 hours paid. PCC: 500 hours, 25 clients, 450 paid. MCC: 2,500 hours, 35 clients, 2,250 paid |
| Background asked for | An associate's degree or higher, or 4,000 hours of work experience, in any field | None stated on the pages read |
| Exam | Board exam: $400, plus a $100 application fee | ACC Exam, or the ICF Credentialing Exam for PCC and MCC. Fees not read |
| Renewal | Continuing education and recertification. Figures not read | Every 3 years, with 40 or more continuing education credits |
| Stated limit | On their own, coaches do not diagnose, prescribe, recommend supplements, create meal plans or give exercise instruction | ICF's 2018 referral guide: a coach does not diagnose or offer treatment |
Which bodies certify life coaches, and what does the certificate prove?
The International Coaching Federation is the body the Indian life coach courses read for this article point to, and EMCC Global is another. ICF awards ACC, PCC and MCC. EMCC Global's individual accreditation runs through Foundation, Practitioner, Senior Practitioner and Master Practitioner, with Foundation asking for one year of coaching or mentoring, 50 client hours and five clients. A credential from either speaks to how you coach. It says nothing about what you know of nutrition, exercise or medicine.
The catch is that these are awards to a person, not to a course. ICF's guide says credentialed coaches complete coach-specific training, mentor coaching, a performance evaluation and a written exam, and log client hours as well. A course can supply the training hours but not the credential, so ask any provider which steps remain after the last class. ICF's guide also says you could call yourself a coach without formal credentials, and treats them as a matter of credibility.
Two Indian providers show the spread, as examples and not recommendations. Anil Dagia's ICF Level 1 Life Transformation Coach page lists 75 hours, including 10 of mentor coaching and an ACC performance evaluation, over 20 weeks of live online classes in English only. It quotes Rs 130,000 plus 18 per cent GST and a next batch on 11 January 2027. Indian Leadership Academy's page lists Level 1 as 60 hours over 3 months, virtual, with 10 mentoring hours, and shows no fee on the page read. Both describe their courses as ICF-accredited, so confirm that on ICF's own site.
What does each course actually teach?
A health coach course teaches behaviour change plus lifestyle subject matter, while a life coach course teaches coaching competencies plus tools for goals and emotions. ACE's Health Coach page is a clear example of the first. Its outline runs from the role of a health coach and behaviour-change models, through coaching skills and lifestyle medicine, to the lifestyle factors behind major conditions and professional conduct. ACE says its programme can take as little as 3 to 6 months, and that exam candidates must be 18, have finished high school and hold a current CPR and AED certificate.
A life coach syllabus looks different. Anil Dagia's page says the course combines ICF Core Competencies, NLP-based frameworks and emotional intelligence, with supervised practice and mentoring. ICF's own advice is to start with a programme aligned to its Core Competencies and Code of Ethics. Neither Indian life coach page read mentions nutrition or physiology. Read any module list for the words your future clients will use. If they will say blood sugar, sleep or weight and the syllabus never does, it is the wrong course for those clients.
Which clients should each coach refer on?
Both coaches refer on anyone with a medical problem or a possible mental health condition, and each also refers on the other's subject. ICF's guide says a coach does not diagnose or offer treatment. NBHWC's scope of practice draws the same line for health and wellness coaches and adds nutrition consultation, meal plans, exercise instruction and supplements. In India, only doctors and qualified dietitians plan diets to treat disease. The table shows what each coach does on hearing the same sentence from a client.
| The client says | A life coach | A health coach |
|---|---|---|
| Should I leave this job? | Core work, with the client deciding | Outside the training. Suggest a life or career coach, and keep any work on sleep or stress habits |
| I snack every night after a hard day at work. | Can explore the stress and the routine. Food questions go to someone trained in nutrition | Core work on the habit, using general food guidance |
| My doctor says my sugar is high. What should I eat? | Refer to the doctor and a qualified dietitian | Support the plan they set. Do not write a therapeutic diet |
| My knee hurts when I run. | Refer to a doctor or physiotherapist | Refer first, then help the client keep to what they were told |
| I binge, then skip meals for a day. | Refer to a mental health professional and a doctor | The same. Do not set food targets |
| I do not see the point of going on. | Treat as urgent. ICF's guide says immediate danger requires direct intervention, not a next session | The same |
ICF's referral guide, published in 2018 by Hullinger and DiGirolamo and still on its site, gives the test to remember: is the issue interfering with the client's daily functioning, such as self-care, work or home life? It names anxiety, depression, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress, substance abuse and suicidal ideation among the common reasons to refer. It also says it was designed for developed English-speaking countries, so treat it as a starting point. Build your own list of local doctors, dietitians and mental health professionals before you take a first client.
Can you train in both, and does one count towards the other?
Yes, you can train in both, and the method carries across, but the hours mostly will not count twice. ICF's guide says you need not choose a niche before starting coach education, and it lists health and wellness among its coaching paths, so a health coach can also pursue an ICF credential. NBHWC is narrower. It asks for completion of its own approved programme, then 50 sessions after the final skills assessment there. Someone with a life coach certificate would still need that programme, unless the same course also holds NBHWC approval.
So choose one first, and add the second when your clients start asking for it. If you lean to the health side, the route into wellness coaching in India describes the wider role, and the batch's comparison of IIN and Indian health coach courses helps if an overseas brand is on your list. Cost needs its own sum on both sides, for which the guide to comparing health coach certification costs gives a method.
A one-week test before you pay
This takes no money and about five hours. It tests the question course pages cannot answer: which conversations you actually want to have, for years, with people who pay you. Do the steps in order and write the answers down, because memory flatters whichever course you already prefer.
Choose between the two courses in one week
List the last ten requests
Write down the last ten times someone asked you for help. Mark each as health or life. If eight go one way, you have most of your answer.
Hold two practice conversations
With consent, spend 30 minutes with one person on a habit and with another on a decision. Ask questions and give no advice. Note which left you wanting to learn more.
Write your referral list
Name one doctor, one dietitian and one mental health professional you could send a client to. If you cannot, start there, whichever course you choose.
Read two syllabi side by side
Count hours on subject knowledge, coaching method and practice. Ask how many of your sessions someone will watch and mark.
Price the whole route
Add exam, mentor coaching, renewal, GST and card charges. For an ICF route, ask for the total up to the credential, not up to the last class.
Decide or wait
If one route wins steps one, two and four, enrol. If they split, keep practising for a month and repeat the test.
The person each course suits
A health coach course suits someone already close to health work, such as a trainer, yoga teacher, nurse or physiotherapist, or a person who reads about sleep and food for pleasure and wants to help others with habits. It suits you if you are comfortable working beside a doctor's plan rather than replacing it. A life coach course suits HR staff, managers, teachers and career changers who are drawn to decisions and direction, and who would happily never discuss a meal. It also suits anyone planning an ICF path, because the hours and mentoring are set out from the start.
Buyers who should look elsewhere
If your real wish is to help people through anxiety, depression, grief or trauma, look elsewhere: that work belongs to trained mental health professionals, and neither coach course prepares you for it. If you want to plan diets for people with diabetes or thyroid disease, read about the dietitian route instead. If you want to write meal plans for healthy adults, a nutrition coach course is the closer fit. And if you mainly want a title for a profile, keep your money for now.
NNWA under the same test
NNWA has no life coach course, and its coaching course pages claim neither ICF accreditation nor NBHWC approval, so it is the wrong choice if either credential is your goal. As a private skill academy it teaches online, in English and Hindi, and classes run live. Its health side comes in three sizes: the Certified Health and Wellness Coach course at 2 months, the Wellness and Lifestyle Coach course at 3 months and the Diploma in Health and Wellness Coaching at 6 months.
All three carry NNWA's own certificate only, and the Medhavi Skills University award does not cover them. None is a degree, and none gives RD eligibility, a hospital dietitian post or the right to treat disease. The published syllabi include behaviour change, client conversations and knowing when to refer, but they do not state how many of your coaching sessions someone will observe. Put that question to NNWA as you would to anyone. The side-by-side of the short course and the Diploma helps once you have chosen the health route.
Your next step, by situation
If your list was mostly health and you already work with clients, take a short health coach course now, because method is what you lack. If it was mostly health and you have no background, choose a course that also teaches nutrition or movement, since a coach with no subject knowledge has little to stand on. If it was mostly careers and decisions, shortlist two life coach providers, confirm their accreditation on ICF's site and ask each for the full cost through to ACC.
Buy nothing yet if your list is split, if you cannot name three people who would let you practise, or if you are hoping a course will settle a difficulty of your own. Spend a month holding free practice conversations first. When you are ready on the health side, NNWA's admissions page sets out how enrolment works, and a counsellor can walk you through the syllabus. Ask the questions above and compare the answers with everything else on your list.
