The NNWA journal

A client tells you she is pregnant, and every session you have ever planned suddenly needs a second look. Which course you need depends less on her than on you: on what you already teach and how she already likes to move.

Prenatal Yoga vs Prenatal Fitness Course: Which Should You Teach?

Choose by what you already teach. If you teach yoga, take Prenatal Yoga. If you train clients in a gym or lead group fitness classes, take Prenatal and Postnatal Fitness. Each course builds on skills you already have, so you start adding value to your clients within weeks rather than learning a second discipline from the beginning.

NNWA publishes the name and qualifications of everyone who writes and checks its material. You can see the full teaching team on the faculty page.

An abstract balance with two bowls, tipped to one side, drawn in brass on deep forest green, with the NNWA wordmark in the corner.

The trap is choosing by what sounds gentler. Plenty of pregnant women want strength work, and plenty want breath and stillness. So look at the clients who already trust you. For the wider picture of work with women, see women's health nutrition certification, which maps the whole specialisation including nutrition.

What is the real difference between the two courses?

Prenatal Yoga teaches you to adapt asana, breath and relaxation for pregnancy and after birth, while Prenatal and Postnatal Fitness teaches you to adapt exercise programmes across the trimesters and through recovery. Both cover anatomy, contraindications and postnatal care. The yoga course adds pranayama and class sequencing, and the fitness course adds core, pelvic floor and programming.

Which course should a yoga teacher take?

Take Prenatal Yoga, because it speaks your language and changes the classes you already run. You will learn which postures to change in each trimester, how to use breath and relaxation for birth preparation, and how to sequence a class where every student's body is changing. Prenatal yoga teacher training in India goes further into what such training should contain.

One thing it will change immediately is the end of your class. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) advises against lying on the back for long periods, so a pregnant student can rest on her side with a bolster instead. That small swap is the kind of detail a good specialist course teaches you to think about in every pose, and your students will notice the difference.

Which course should a personal trainer take?

Take Prenatal and Postnatal Fitness, because your clients come to you for strength and you need to keep them training safely. It covers how the body adapts over the three trimesters, how to adjust a programme as pregnancy progresses, and how to bring a new mother back gradually. That last part is easy to get wrong without training.

Picture a trainer in Gurugram whose long-term client has just shared her news. Without this training, the safe answer is to pause their sessions and lose the client for a year. With it, he can plan each trimester, teach pelvic floor work and welcome her back after birth at a pace that suits her recovery.

What safety limits apply to prenatal teachers?

Your limit is simple: you adapt exercise for women their doctor has cleared, and you do not assess or manage a pregnancy. Ask every student for her doctor's agreement before she joins. Medical questions go back to her obstetrician, and any warning sign during a session means you stop at once and tell her to call that doctor.

Can you teach pregnant women straight after either course?

Yes, if you already teach in your discipline and you start carefully: one student at a time, with her doctor's agreement, and with your course mentor to ask. A trainee has more to learn first. Build up the basic teaching skill with general students, because adapting a class is much harder than following one.

The teacher each course suits

Prenatal Yoga suits studio teachers and practitioners who love working with breath and stillness. Prenatal and Postnatal Fitness suits personal trainers, group instructors and coaches. Yoga and Pilates teachers who want to extend into pregnancy fitness can also join the fitness course, and a teacher who wants to offer both can take them one after the other.

Should you add nutrition to a prenatal teaching course?

Yes, once you are teaching, because new mothers will ask you about food before they ask anyone else. Post-Pregnancy and Lactation Nutrition covers recovery, lactation, rebuilding stores and Indian postpartum food customs. For the months before birth, read online prenatal nutrition courses. Refer any medical diet question to her doctor.

If you are still deciding whether to teach at all, the 200 hour yoga teacher training syllabus shows what the foundation contains before any prenatal specialism is added on top.

The verdict and your next step

NNWA teaches both courses live online in English and Hindi, with lifetime access to recordings and notes and 24x7 mentor and doubt support. Yoga teachers should take Prenatal Yoga, and trainers and instructors should take Prenatal and Postnatal Fitness. Both carry NNWA's own certificate, which you can show clients and studios.

Your next step tonight: count the pregnant or postnatal clients who have asked you for help this year, and note what they wanted. Then tell the NNWA admissions team what you already teach, ask which course fits, and check the current fee and next batch on the course page.
