The NNWA journal

Every school lists asana, pranayama and anatomy, so the syllabi all look alike. The difference is in how the hours are shared out and how much of the time you spend teaching. Here is how to read one.

200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training Syllabus: The Topics Explained, Hour by Hour

A 200 hour yoga teacher training syllabus spends its hours on four things: practising and refining technique, anatomy and physiology, the philosophy and ethics of yoga, and learning to teach. Yoga Alliance's published standard gives the largest block to technique at 75 hours, and 50 hours to teaching and professional skills.

NNWA publishes the name and qualifications of everyone who writes and checks its material. You can see the full teaching team on the faculty page.

Six ascending columns in brass and forest green, suggesting a route with steps, with the NNWA wordmark in the corner.

That split is the best free tool a buyer has, because it gives you something to measure a brochure against. The career question around it belongs to how to become a yoga teacher in India. This page is only about what you will actually study.

What is in a 200 hour yoga teacher training syllabus?

It is built around four categories: techniques, training and practice; anatomy and physiology; yoga humanities; and professional essentials, which take in teaching methodology and practicum. The table gives Yoga Alliance's figures for a Registered Yoga School. Other schools may divide their time differently, but the same four areas should all be visible in what they publish.

Where the hours go in Yoga Alliance's RYS 200 core curriculum, from its May 2025 standards file
CategoryHoursWhat it covers
Techniques, training and practice75Asana, pranayama and subtle body, meditation, chanting, mantras and mudras
Anatomy and physiology30Bones, joints, muscles, nervous and respiratory systems, biomechanics, contraindications
Yoga humanities30History, philosophy, major texts, ethics
Professional essentials50Teaching methodology, professional development, practicum and feedback

Add those up and you reach 185 hours, so ask each school how it uses the remaining 15. If a syllabus shows no clear home for one of the four categories, ask where that material has gone before you assume it is there.

The practice block: more than a daily class

Beginners assume this block means doing a lot of yoga. It is closer to studying practice from the outside. Yoga Alliance's list asks for sequencing asana, pranayama and meditation to reach a particular effect safely, plus shared alignment principles and contraindications. You should finish able to say why a posture comes third and not first.

Pranayama should arrive with its effects and its adaptations, naming techniques such as Ujjayi, Nadi Shodhana and Kapalabhati. A student with high blood pressure sits in your class one day and asks about Kapalabhati. A sound syllabus has already prepared you to pause and send that question to their doctor.

Why does anatomy matter so much for 30 hours?

Because it is the only block that directly protects your students' bodies. Thirty hours is small against the rest, and it has to cover the major bones, joint types, the muscles used in asana, the nervous and respiratory systems, joint movement and stabilisation. A weak course spends those hours on labelling a skeleton, and never reaches the injured knee in front of you.

The humanities block, without the mystique

This is history, philosophy and ethics, and it does real work. Yoga Alliance's list names familiarity with the Yoga Sutras, the Bhagavad Gita, the Upanishads and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, and asks trainees to reflect on how philosophy relates to their practice. In India your students will often know some of this already, so a retired schoolteacher in Varanasi will notice a shallow answer quickly.

How much of the syllabus should be teaching?

About a quarter, going by the 50 hours Yoga Alliance sets for professional essentials, and the time when you teach while somebody watches is the part that matters most. It covers sequencing, pace, environment, cueing and class management, then a practicum with mentorship and feedback. Teaching is a skill of its own, and only repetition with correction will build it.

A gym trainer in Indore who practises beautifully can still lose a beginners' class in ten minutes, simply by cueing too fast. So ask how many full classes you will teach before certification, to whom, and what form the feedback takes. This matters even more on an online course, where online training versus Rishikesh shows what to check.

How is NNWA's 200-hour syllabus organised?

NNWA's 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training lists six topic areas: asana practice, pranayama, yoga anatomy, teaching methodology, yoga philosophy and meditation practices. It is aligned with the Yoga Certification Board's foundation level, taught online in English and Hindi, with mentor support, lifetime recordings and two NNWA skill-enhancement certificates. A regular practice helps, though nobody needs teaching experience to join.

The page lists topic areas, not hours for each, so ask the NNWA admissions team for the split. It is also worth knowing how this maps to the two bodies. The Board's own examination is separate, and the numbers above are Yoga Alliance's standard for its own registered schools, as Yoga Alliance or the Yoga Certification Board explains.

The reader a 200-hour syllabus suits

This level suits people who want to teach general beginner classes, or who want a structured grounding in their own practice. It was never meant to prepare you for every student. A pregnant woman, a person with a spinal condition and a child each need more training than a foundation can hold, which is what the next courses are for. If you are still weighing the purchase itself, is the training worth it comes first.

Does a longer syllabus teach more than a shorter one?

Not by itself. Hours written on a certificate are only a promise, and Yoga Alliance's standard says that trainees who cannot demonstrate proficiency should not pass simply for completing the course. Ask what is tested and how. Whether 200 or 400 hours suits you depends on what you already teach, and the total cost of training should be set against the live hours you get.

Your verdict and next step

The verdict: a good 200-hour syllabus spends real time on anatomy you can use and on teaching with feedback, and NNWA's online foundation is a strong place to learn those six areas alongside a job or a home. Take the checklist above tonight, set it beside the course page and one other school, and send whatever remains unclear to admissions before you enrol.
