The NNWA journal

You can get a month off perhaps once, and Rishikesh schools keep appearing in your feed. The online course costs less and fits around work, but someone has asked whether it even counts. The useful question is who will watch you teach, and what the whole trip costs.

How to Choose Between Online Yoga Teacher Training and a Rishikesh Course

Choose a residential course in Rishikesh if you can leave work and home for three to four weeks and want teachers correcting your body every day. Choose a live online course if that absence is impossible and you can get someone qualified to watch you teach on camera. If you can spare about eight days, a hybrid may give you most of both. Format does not settle the certificate question, because becoming a yoga teacher in India runs on two separate systems. Both are checked below.

NNWA publishes the name and qualifications of everyone who writes and checks its material. You can see the full teaching team on the faculty page.

What do the two formats really cost once travel is added?

More than the fee gap suggests, though the gap itself is smaller than many people expect. Sri Sri School of Yoga publishes all three formats, which takes the difference between schools out of the sum: Rs 38,000 for 8 weeks online, Rs 48,000 for 6 weeks online plus 8 days on campus, and Rs 62,000 for 21 days in Rishikesh. Residential therefore adds Rs 24,000 to online at the same school, before any train ticket. A different school, Vinyasa Yoga Training, lists Rs 45,000 for Indian students in a shared room for 28 days.

Read what each residential fee holds. Vinyasa's page includes a room, three meals a day, books, Sunday trips and pickup from Dehradun airport or Haridwar station, with air conditioning at USD 50 extra and Rs 8,000 of the fee paid as a deposit. Sri Sri's Rishikesh page lists sattvic meals and has an accommodation section, so confirm in writing which room the fee covers. Its question-and-answer section says a fee, once deposited, cannot be refunded or transferred.

Then add what no fee table shows. Travel both ways comes first, followed by income. Take an example of Rs 1,500 take-home for each working day: a 21-day course spans about 15 working days, so unpaid leave would cost about Rs 22,500, nearly the whole fee gap again. With paid leave that line is zero. Online study has its own smaller bill, such as a mat, blocks, a stable connection and a room where you can be seen from head to foot. Put your own figures in, because this sum changes the answer for many people.

Does Yoga Alliance accept online yoga teacher training?

Yes, on its published standards. Yoga Alliance's Standards for Registered Yoga Schools, in a file posted in May 2025, says schools may run programmes fully in person, fully by distance learning or as a mix, with at least 15 per cent of hours delivered live. For a 200-hour school that is 30 hours. So a registered online course may leave 170 of its 200 hours as recordings and self-study. That is allowed, and it is the reason to ask for a school's live count rather than accept the word online.

Two dates need care. An older Yoga Alliance policy page, last updated in February 2020, describes an option of 40 online hours within 200, so make sure that anything you read is using the later standards. And Yoga Alliance's credential page announces changes for January 2027: the 200-hour requirement stays, and teachers face a 40-question assessment with a 75 per cent pass mark and two attempts. That page speaks mainly to people already credentialed, so ask any school what a 2027 graduate must do. The wider picture is in Yoga Alliance and the Yoga Certification Board compared, and the labels in how to read RYT 200 and YTT 200.

What does the Yoga Certification Board ask for?

It assesses the person, whichever format taught them. The Board's guideline (version 0.3, effective 27 February 2020, so check for a later one) sets the Yoga Protocol Instructor level at not less than 200 hours of training, or 3 months part time, or 1 month full time, and says open candidates face no eligibility criteria. Assessment has two stages: a theory paper, then a practical of up to one hour covering demonstration and teaching skill. Its application page adds that institutions can hold the exam offline or online.

So a certificate from Rishikesh does not give you a Board level, and nor does an online one. Each needs the Board's own assessment, and that makes the practical your real target if you plan to work in Indian schools or institutions. The government institute's arrangement shows what careful online teaching can look like. Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga splits its course into 60 online and 60 campus seats, holds examinations for online batches on its premises, and may call online candidates in on Saturdays for shatkarma practice. Its fee table is from a notice for April to June 2026, so look for the current notice.

Hours as published, and what each hour contains

Every course here says 200 hours, but the pace and the company differ. Spread over 21 days, 200 hours averages about 9.5 hours a day; over 28 days it is about 7. Sri Sri's listed Rishikesh batch runs from 6 am to 10 pm, with a nature walk and satsang inside that day. Yoga Alliance's hours policy caps instruction at 14 hours a day. An 8-week online course averages 25 hours a week, which is a second job if you keep your first one, so test your week before enrolling.

Sri Sri's hybrid page is the most detailed of those read, and it is worth using as a template for questions. Each of the 6 online weeks has 20 to 22 hours of video and self-study, a 3-hour live session on Sunday and 1 to 2 hours with a mentor. Then 8 campus days carry 10 hours of in-person training each. By that count about 80 hours are in the room and about 24 to 30 are live online. Ask any other school to break its 200 hours down the same way. The difference between 200 and 400 hours is a separate choice, best made after this one.

Adjustment practice, and what a screen cannot teach

Physical correction is the sharpest difference between formats. Yoga Alliance does not lay down one answer: its standards ask each school to state its position on verbal, visual and physical cues. Sri Sri's Rishikesh page lists a hands-on asana session and corrections using props. Online, you can learn to see faults and to fix them with words and demonstration, and a good teacher can spot a lot on camera. You cannot learn how much pressure a hand should apply, or feel a student's weight shift, through a phone.

Match this to the job you want. If you will teach on video, verbal and visual cueing is the work itself, and online training rehearses it directly. If you will teach a full studio, you need practice with bodies in a room, and an online graduate has to arrange that separately. Residential training is no automatic cure either, since a large batch can mean little individual attention. Ask the student-to-teacher ratio, and ask how the school teaches consent before touching a student. Anyone with a medical condition goes back to their doctor, in every format.

The NNWA course under the same test

NNWA is not a Rishikesh option; it is a private academy in Kolkata with no residential format. Its 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training page describes online study with live and recorded classes in English and Hindi, covering asana, pranayama, anatomy, teaching methodology, philosophy and meditation. The certificate is NNWA's own. The university award that covers NNWA's four flagship programmes does not cover this course, and it is not a degree. The fee is printed live on the course card.

The limits matter here. The page does not list Yoga Alliance registration, so a reader who needs RYT status should choose a registered school. The syllabus is described as aligned to the Yoga Certification Board, which says what is taught and is not a Board certificate, so that level still means sitting the Board's assessment. No one at NNWA will adjust your body in person, and you should plan for that. If those gaps do not touch your goal, compare it like any other course, using the questions below.

The people online training suits

Online suits someone with a job, young children or an elderly parent at home, for whom a month away is unrealistic rather than merely inconvenient. It suits a practitioner who already has a regular teacher nearby, because that person can supply the correction a screen cannot. It also suits anyone planning to teach online or to small private groups in India, and anyone who learns better with weeks between topics to try things out. Hindi speakers should check language early, since Sri Sri's online page lists English.

Reasons to look elsewhere and go residential

Look elsewhere than online if you have never been corrected by a teacher in person, because you will not know what you are missing. Do the same if your home has no quiet room, or if you know from experience that recorded lessons pile up unwatched. Studio work in a competitive city often rewards visible practical confidence, and immersion builds that quickly. Equally, look past Rishikesh if your health makes a 6 am to 10 pm day unwise, or if the trip would mean borrowing money: an hour of nearby weekly practice with a good teacher may serve you better.

A method for deciding this week

Choose your format in one evening

  1. Name where you will teach

Write down the setting: overseas studio, Indian school or institution, your own online class, or private clients. This tells you whether Yoga Alliance or the Board's assessment matters more.

  2. Total the real bill

For two courses, add the fee, travel both ways, income lost during leave, kit and any exam charge. Compare those totals, never the fees alone.

  3. Count teacher hours

Ask each school for live hours, hours with lead trainers and hours you spend teaching with feedback. Get the answer by email.

  4. Ask who will watch you teach

Ask for the batch size, the number of observed practice classes and how corrections are given. If studying online, name the local teacher who will observe you, and ask them now.

  5. Check the claim yourself

Look the school up in Yoga Alliance's own directory, and read the Board's site for its levels and assessment. Do not rely on a logo on a brochure.

What should you do next?

Decide by your situation. If you can take the time and your goal is a studio or work abroad, shortlist two Yoga Alliance registered residential schools and ask them the questions above. If you cannot leave home, choose a course with a stated number of live hours, and line up a local teacher before you pay. If you can spare only about eight days, look at hybrids first. If your goal is an Indian institution, plan for the Board's assessment, which no certificate replaces, and read its syllabus now.

Do not buy anything yet if you have practised for only a few months or irregularly. Sri Sri's hybrid page itself asks for an existing regular practice, and a few more months with one teacher costs far less than a course you are not ready for. Once you do start teaching, students will ask about food, so see what studying yoga and nutrition together involves and the worked yoga teacher case study, remembering that diets for disease belong to doctors and qualified dietitians. If NNWA is on your shortlist, its admissions page sets out the steps, and its counsellors can be asked these same questions.
