The NNWA journal

Every diet course syllabus looks impressive until you ask what you will be able to do at the end of each subject. Here is a real one, all twelve blocks, with what each teaches and what to demand from any course you compare it with.

Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics Syllabus: Subject by Subject

A diploma in nutrition and dietetics syllabus should take you from the science of food to working with real clients, and NNWA's does it in 52 modules across 12 blocks. Months one to three cover foundations, meal planning and client cases. Months four to six cover physiology, diet charts, hospital feeding and public health.

NNWA publishes the name and qualifications of everyone who writes and checks its material. You can see the full teaching team on the faculty page.

Six ascending columns in brass and forest green, suggesting a route with steps, with the NNWA wordmark in the corner.

Most syllabus pages give you titles and stop there. This one explains why each block exists and what you should be able to do afterwards, so you can hold any other course up against it. For eligibility, duration and award, the diploma in nutrition and dietetics guide is the place to start.

What subjects are in a diploma in nutrition and dietetics?

The subjects are nutrition science, macronutrients and micronutrients, energy and body composition, diets and supplements, client practice, applied nutrition, physiology, therapeutic diet design, clinical diet charts, institutional feeding and public health. NNWA's official syllabus groups these into twelve lettered blocks, seven in the first stage and five in the second, and here they all are.

NNWA's Diploma syllabus, Months 1 to 3: Certification Foundation
BlockModulesWhat it covers
A. Foundations of Nutrition ScienceM01 to M04Human nutrition, WHO, USDA and FSSAI guidance, research methods
B. Macronutrients and MicronutrientsM05 to M09Carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals
C. Energy, Body Composition, HydrationM10 to M12Metabolism, obesity, fluid balance, plant-based plates
D. Diets, Supplements and MythsM13 to M16Keto, Mediterranean, paleo, supplements, hormones, fads
E. Client Practice and Meal PlanningM17 to M19Assessment, calorie calculation, tracking progress
F. Applied and Special NutritionM20 to M22Sport, special populations, Indian cultural practice
G. Case Studies and Setting Up PracticeM23 to M26Fat-loss case, muscle gain and PCOS case, practice, final project

Notice block E. Three modules on assessment, calculation and tracking turn what came before into a skill, and a course without them leaves you with facts and no method. The stage then ends with two cases carried from intake to a tracked plan. If you stopped at that point you would hold NNWA's Certification in Nutrition, which is the same 26 modules.

What does the second half of the syllabus teach?

The second half teaches how the body works in illness, how diets are adapted to it, and how to feed people at scale. It opens with physiology, because a diet chart for kidney disease makes no sense until you understand the kidney, and it closes with public health and institutional catering, where one plan can reach many people.

NNWA's Diploma syllabus, Months 4 to 6: Clinical, Therapeutic and Public Health
BlockModulesWhat it covers
H. Applied Human PhysiologyM27 to M32Heart, gut, blood, kidneys, lungs and energy regulation
I. Therapeutic Diet Design: FoundationsM33 to M37Portion standards, hospital diets, weight, fever, anaemia
J. Clinical Diet Charts and CounsellingM38 to M43GI, liver, kidney, metabolic, cardiac, PCOD and thyroid
K. Clinical and Institutional FeedingM44 to M48Institutional menus, hospital protocols, eating disorders
L. Public Health and Food ServiceM49 to M52National programmes, catering systems, menu standardisation

Block J is where the course earns its name: six condition-specific modules, each paired with counselling. Block L takes you into the programmes India runs at scale, such as Mission Saksham Anganwadi and POSHAN 2.0 under the Ministry of Women and Child Development. A good syllabus should name real programmes, as this one does in module M50.

Does studying these subjects let you treat patients?

No, and a straight syllabus says so. Diets that treat disease are planned by doctors and qualified dietitians only, and a skill certificate holder coaches healthy people and refers the medical cases. You study therapeutic diets so you can understand a doctor's plan, explain it, support the person following it and notice when something needs referring back.

That knowledge is worth a great deal in the room. A client with thyroid trouble who hears you ask the right questions, and then hears you send her back to her doctor with those questions written down, trusts you more. Hospital Registered Dietitian posts follow a BSc or MSc and a recognised internship, and the dietitian course guide explains that path.

How is this syllabus different from a degree's subjects?

It covers the same families of subject but to a different depth and for a different purpose. The degree goes further into biochemistry, food science and laboratory work, while the diploma moves faster towards assessment, meal planning and counselling. The full list of degree subjects is in what you study in nutrition and dietetics.

If you hold a degree already, there is a further stage. The one-year nutrition course adds 28 modules to these 52: advanced counselling, autoimmune and surgical nutrition, functional, paediatric, maternal and skin nutrition, then a supervised practicum and a capstone. A narrower clinical syllabus is set out in the clinical nutrition course syllabus.

Which Indian references should a diet course syllabus use?

A diet course syllabus for India should be built on Indian data, starting with ICMR-NIN's Dietary Guidelines for Indians and the Indian Food Composition Tables. A plan built on imported calorie charts will struggle with a Bengali lunch or a Punjabi breakfast. Ask any provider which food tables and guidelines they teach from, then look at them yourself.

You can see how this works in practice in NNWA's free Indian foods section, which is drawn from those tables. Pick five foods your family eats daily and look them up tonight. Try the free calculators as well, because energy needs and portion work are what blocks C and E teach you to do by hand.

The learner this syllabus suits

The syllabus also suits people who are afraid of it. A commerce graduate reading Renal Physiology and Fluid Balance may feel out of place, but the science starts in block A, physiology comes only after three months of foundations, and you keep every recording for life if you need to hear a lecture twice.

How do you judge any diploma syllabus in fifteen minutes?

Read it for what you will do rather than what you will hear. Take the provider's syllabus and run the checks below in order. Any course can be held to them, including NNWA's, and a counsellor should be able to answer every one. How to read a nutrition course brochure covers the rest of the document.

NNWA's research and development team keeps the curriculum current, and the syllabus is taught live in English and Hindi with lifetime access to recordings and notes. The award comes with Medhavi Skills University, Sikkim, alongside NNWA's certificate. Fees print live on the course card, and what the diploma costs explains what they should cover.

The verdict and your next step

For a syllabus that takes a beginner from first principles to condition-specific work, NNWA's Diploma is the one to beat: all twelve blocks are published and each stage ends in a portfolio. Print the two tables, mark what you already know, and take the rest to NNWA admissions as your questions.
