01The food

About pointed gourd (parwal)

Pointed gourd, Trichosanthes dioica, is a small, striped, spindle-shaped gourd grown on vines in the Gangetic plains and the east, especially Bihar, Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Assam, and sold from spring to the monsoon. IFCT 2017 records names in 11 languages: parwal in Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu, potol in Bengali and Assamese, potala in Odia, padval in Gujarati, parwar in Marathi, kommu potla in Telugu and mara thonde in Kannada.

In Bengal, potol is almost a daily vegetable: fried whole as potol bhaja, cooked with potatoes as alu potoler dalna, simmered in poppy seed paste as potol posto, or hollowed and stuffed with fish or paneer as the festive potoler dorma. Odisha makes potala rasa and potala besara with mustard. Bihar and Uttar Pradesh cook parwal ki sabzi and bharwan parwal, and turn the gourd into parwal ki mithai, candied and stuffed with sweet khoya.

06Good to know

Before you plan around it

Parwal itself is light, but some of its best-loved forms are not: potol bhaja soaks up oil, potoler dorma is rich, and parwal ki mithai is candied in sugar syrup and stuffed with sweetened khoya, so it belongs with sweets. Choose firm, small, deep green gourds; yellowing ones have hard, mature seeds. Scrape the skin lightly rather than peeling it off completely, since much of the fibre sits just under it. For people on a potassium-restricted diet, parwal is one of the safer vegetables, but check portions with a dietitian.

Food composition is general information, not a diet plan. Anyone managing a medical condition should plan their diet with a doctor or a registered dietitian.

07Questions

What people ask about pointed gourd (parwal)

Is parwal good for health?

Yes. Pointed gourd is light, 24 kcal per 100 g in IFCT 2017, with 2.6 g fibre, 19.2 mg vitamin C and very little sodium. It is easy to digest. How it is cooked, dry sabzi or deep-fried and stuffed, decides how light the dish is.

Is pointed gourd the same as ivy gourd?

No. Pointed gourd, parwal or potol, is larger, spindle-shaped and striped, and belongs to a different genus. Ivy gourd, kundru or tondli, is smaller and smoother. They are cooked in similar ways, and IFCT 2017 lists them separately.

Is parwal good for kidney patients?

Parwal is low in potassium, 117 mg per 100 g in IFCT 2017, and in sodium, which makes it one of the more suitable vegetables for people on potassium-restricted diets. Kidney diets are individual, so portions should be planned with a renal dietitian.
