01The food

About sunflower seeds

Sunflower, suraj mukhi in Hindi, Bengali and Punjabi, surya mukhi in Marathi, suryakanthi in Malayalam and Tamil, and podduthirugidi puvvu in Telugu, is grown mainly in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, almost entirely for sunflower oil, one of India's most used refined oils. The striped seeds and their grey-white kernels are a newer snack in Indian cities.

Unlike sesame or flax, sunflower seed has no long tradition in Indian cooking, so its uses are modern: roasted kernels in trail mixes and granola, seeds on multigrain bread and in chikki, and a spoonful over salads, poha or upma. Unshelled roasted seeds are sold in small packets as a time-pass snack.

06Good to know

Before you plan around it

Packaged sunflower seeds are often heavily salted, so read the label or buy plain ones. The seeds are dense at 586 kcal per 100 g, and their fat is mostly omega-6 rather than omega-3, so they are best eaten by the spoonful, not the bowl. Swallowing large numbers of shells, a habit some snackers have, can block the bowel; spit the shells out. Sunflower seed allergy is uncommon but does occur.

Food composition is general information, not a diet plan. Anyone managing a medical condition should plan their diet with a doctor or a registered dietitian.
