Litchi: nutrition per 100 g
Per 100 g, litchi gives 54 kcal, 11.4 g carbohydrate, 9.3 g sugars and 33.8 mg vitamin C, according to IFCT 2017. This meets roughly 42 per cent of the daily vitamin C requirement of a man and 52 per cent of a woman. Litchi is low in fibre, 1.3 g per 100 g and 39th of 43 fruits, so it is very easy to eat by the dozen.
About litchi
Litchi is a short, intense summer pleasure. Bihar grows most of India's crop, and the shahi litchi of Muzaffarpur, with its rose-like fragrance, carries a geographical indication tag. West Bengal's Malda, the foothills around Dehradun, Punjab and Assam add to the supply. The season runs for only a few weeks in late spring and early summer, and the fruit browns and loses flavour within days of picking, so it is eaten fresh almost everywhere it is sold.
The name barely changes across India: lichi in Hindi, Marathi, Tamil and most other languages, lichu in Bengali and Assamese, and letchu in Odia, as IFCT 2017 records. Most people peel and eat it as it is, chilled. In cities it also turns up in sherbets, ice creams and canned in syrup, which is a very different food from the fresh fruit.
What litchi brings to a meal
- 01
Good vitamin C
Litchi has 33.8 mg vitamin C per 100 g, 16th of 44 fruits. Eating 100 g supplies about 42 per cent of what a man needs in a day and 52 per cent of what a woman needs.
- 02
Low fibre, quick sugar
Of its 11.4 g carbohydrate per 100 g, 9.3 g is sugars, and fibre is just 1.3 g. That makes litchi easy to overeat, since it does little to fill you up.
- 03
Riboflavin and iron for a fruit
Litchi ranks 7th of 44 fruits for riboflavin, at 0.06 mg per 100 g, and 11th of 43 for iron, at 0.79 mg. Both are small amounts, but above many fruits.
- 04
Very little calcium
With 6 mg calcium per 100 g, litchi ranks 39th of 43 fruits. It contributes almost nothing to bones; milk, curd and ragi are the foods for that.

How litchi is eaten
- Peeled and eaten chilled, straight from the bunch, the brown seed spat out.
- Litchi sherbet: peeled fruit blended, strained and mixed with lime juice and a little mint.
- Stirred into a summer fruit custard or set into a litchi kulfi.
- Halved into a fruit chaat with watermelon and a pinch of black salt.
Before you plan around it
In Muzaffarpur and nearby districts, outbreaks of a severe brain illness in young children were linked to eating litchi, especially unripe fruit, on an empty stomach after skipping the evening meal. Natural compounds in the fruit lower blood sugar sharply in a child who has not eaten. Public health advice is simple: children should eat a proper evening meal, should not fill up on litchi, and unripe fruit should be avoided. For everyone else, the main caution is sugar and the seed, which is not edible.
Food composition is general information, not a diet plan. Anyone managing a medical condition should plan their diet with a doctor or a registered dietitian.
What people ask about litchi
Is litchi safe for children?
Ripe litchi eaten after or with a meal is fine for most children. Health authorities advise that children should not eat litchi, especially unripe fruit, on an empty stomach or in place of a meal, because of a link with severe low blood sugar seen in Bihar.
How much vitamin C is in litchi?
IFCT 2017 lists 33.8 mg vitamin C per 100 g of litchi, about 42 per cent of a man's and 52 per cent of a woman's daily requirement. Canned litchi in syrup keeps less of it and adds sugar.
Can people with diabetes eat litchi?
In small amounts with a meal. Litchi has 11.4 g carbohydrate and 9.3 g sugars per 100 g with little fibre, so a few fruits are wiser than a bunch. Anyone taking medicine for diabetes should work out fruit amounts with their doctor or dietitian.
When is litchi season in India?
Litchi comes into markets for a few weeks in late spring and early summer, starting with Bihar and Bengal and finishing with the foothill crops of Uttarakhand and Punjab.
