01The food

About jackfruit (ripe)

Jackfruit is the summer fruit of the southern and eastern coasts: chakka in Malayalam, palapazham in Tamil, halasu in Kannada, panasa in Telugu and Odia, phanas in Marathi and Gujarati, kanthal in Bengali and kathal in Hindi. Kerala, where it is the state fruit, grows it in almost every compound, and Panruti in Tamil Nadu, coastal Karnataka, the Konkan, Assam and Bengal follow. The heavy fruit ripens from late spring into the monsoon.

The page covers the ripe golden bulbs. The same tree also gives raw jackfruit, which is cooked as a vegetable and has its own page, and large seeds that are roasted or added to curries. Kerala households turn ripe bulbs into chakka varattiyathu, a dark jam kept for months, and the rainy-season dessert chakka pradhaman; Karnataka and the Konkan steam them into sweet idli and dumplings wrapped in leaves.

06Good to know

Before you plan around it

Jackfruit is sweet and easy to overeat in season, and its 12.2 g sugars per 100 g add up quickly over a big plateful, which matters for anyone managing blood sugar. Some people feel bloated after eating a lot at once. The white latex sticks to hands and knives; rub them with coconut oil before cutting. People allergic to birch pollen or latex occasionally react to jackfruit. Its 279 mg potassium per 100 g is moderate, but kidney patients on a potassium limit should still count it.

Food composition is general information, not a diet plan. Anyone managing a medical condition should plan their diet with a doctor or a registered dietitian.

Is ripe jackfruit high in sugar?

Moderately. IFCT 2017 lists 12.2 g sugars in 14.0 g carbohydrate per 100 g of ripe bulbs. That is similar to many sweet fruits, but jackfruit bulbs are easy to eat in large numbers, so the portion decides how much sugar you take in.

What is jackfruit called in different languages?

IFCT 2017 records kathal in Hindi and Punjabi, kanthal in Bengali, kothal in Assamese, phanas in Marathi and Gujarati, panasa in Telugu and Odia, halasu in Kannada, chakka in Malayalam and palapazham in Tamil.
