Calories in Paneer Kathi Roll

One paneer kathi roll has about 424 kcal, with 10.3 g of protein, 29.8 g of carbohydrate and 29 g of fat. The Indian Nutrient Databank figure is for a small roll: a paratha of 20 g of atta and 10 g of maida, 25 g of paneer, some egg and vegetables, and over 5 teaspoons of oil. Street rolls are bigger.

Of this energy, about 28% comes from carbohydrate, 62% from fat and 10% from protein.

1 paneer kathi roll is about 20% of the daily energy requirement of a sedentary adult man and 26% of a sedentary adult woman's (ICMR-NIN, 2020).

These figures are from the Indian Nutrient Databank (INDB), which calculates each dish from a standard recipe using Indian food composition data. They describe that recipe and that serving: a larger portion, or more oil, ghee or sugar, gives more. Source: Vijayakumar A, Dubasi HB, Awasthi A, Jaacks LM. 02The number

What this figure covers

The standard recipe makes 2 rolls from 40 g of atta, 20 g of maida, 50 g of paneer, 25 g of egg, 45 g of onion, 25 g of capsicum, 2 tablespoons of mint chutney with curds and 3.5 tablespoons of oil. One roll therefore has a paratha made from 20 g of atta and 10 g of maida, 25 g of paneer, 12 g of egg and 5 1/4 teaspoons of oil. The wrap is small and the paneer is a modest portion, yet the oil is heavy. A roll from a street stall is usually larger, with more filling and often sauces or mayonnaise, so it is unlikely to be lower.

Fat supplies 62% of the energy, carbohydrate 28% and protein 10%. That split says what a kathi roll is: a fried paratha with a filling, where the frying matters most. The 5 1/4 teaspoons of oil in each roll, at about 44 kcal a teaspoon, are the main reason it reaches 424 kcal. The paneer adds protein, calcium and some saturated fat, and the egg in the recipe, usually cooked onto the paratha as a thin layer, adds a little more. Vegetarians who avoid egg should know that a kathi roll is often made this way, even with a paneer filling.

03The recipe behind it

What goes into one serving

The recipe INDB analysed makes 2 rolls. These are its main ingredients; spices, salt and water are left out.

04What moves it

What changes the number

  • 01

Oil for the paratha and the filling

The recipe counts 5 1/4 teaspoons of oil in one roll, used for frying the paratha and cooking the paneer filling. A paratha roasted with a single teaspoon and a filling tossed in very little oil would bring the figure down sharply.

  • 02

    Size of the wrap

This roll is built on a paratha of 20 g of atta and 10 g of maida. Stalls commonly use a much bigger, flakier paratha, and double rolls use two. More dough means more flour and more oil to fry it.

  • 03

    Paneer, egg and extras

There are 25 g of paneer and 12 g of egg in the reference roll. Extra paneer, a full egg layer or grated cheese raises protein and fat together, and the roll's calories with them.

  • 04

    Sauces and chutney

The figure includes 1 tablespoon of mint chutney with curds. Mayonnaise, ketchup or a sweet chilli sauce in its place adds fat or sugar that the 424 kcal does not cover.

In a meal and in a day

One paneer kathi roll is about 20% of a sedentary man's daily energy requirement and 26% of a woman's, so it is a meal, not a snack between meals. Two would come to 848 kcal. For that energy the protein is modest, 10.3 g, and the fibre is 3.6 g. If a roll is lunch, the rest of the day has room for dal, vegetables and curd but less room for fried food. Half a roll, about 212 kcal, with a bowl of salad or a glass of chaas is a workable evening snack.

Ways to keep it lighter

  • Roast the paratha on a dry tawa and finish it with a teaspoon of oil in place of shallow frying.
  • Use a whole wheat roti as the wrap and grill the paneer, so very little oil is needed.
  • Load the roll with onion, capsicum, cabbage and cucumber, and keep the mint and curd chutney.
  • Share one roll between two people, or keep half for later.
  • Ask the stall to leave out mayonnaise and extra butter.
07Worth knowing

Before you rely on the number

A paneer roll sounds like a protein choice, but this one has 29 g of fat for 10.3 g of protein. Most of that fat is frying oil, and the paneer and egg add saturated fat and cholesterol besides. Street versions with bigger parathas, more oil and salty sauces go higher still. Anyone following advice from a doctor or dietitian about cholesterol, blood pressure or a heart condition should count a kathi roll as an occasional full meal and stick to the limits they have been given.

Food composition is general information, not a diet plan. Anyone managing a medical condition should plan their diet with a doctor or a registered dietitian.

08Questions

Paneer Kathi Roll: common questions

How many calories are in a paneer kathi roll?

About 424 kcal for a small roll made to the Indian Nutrient Databank's recipe, with 25 g of paneer and a paratha fried in a generous amount of oil. A larger street roll, a double roll, or one with mayonnaise or cheese will have more.

How much protein is in a paneer kathi roll?

About 10.3 g, which is only 10% of its energy. The recipe uses 25 g of paneer and 12 g of egg in each roll. More paneer raises the protein, though it raises the fat as well. A plate of chicken chowmein in the same comparison has 21.8 g.

Is a paneer kathi roll good for weight loss?

As usually made, it is hard to fit in: 424 kcal in a small roll, 62% of it from fat. A home version on a roasted roti with grilled paneer and plenty of vegetables is a different proposition. In both cases the effect on weight depends on what else is eaten that day.

Paneer kathi roll or vegetable chowmein: which has fewer calories?

In these recipes the chowmein is slightly lower, at 389 kcal a plate against 424 kcal for the roll, and the protein is close: 9.2 g and 10.3 g. Both are oil-heavy foods, and the portion served at a stall will usually be larger than either reference serving.
