This article explains what separates the three, what raw and unflavoured mean, whether whey fits a vegetarian diet, and how to read a label for the tricks that inflate protein figures. Whether you need a powder at all is a separate question, answered in do you need protein powder.
What is whey protein concentrate?
It is whey that has been filtered to remove much of the water, lactose and minerals, then dried. The term covers a wide range, from about 35 to nearly 90 per cent protein, but the concentrate used in sports powders is usually labelled WPC 80 and ends up around 70 to 80 per cent protein once flavour and sweetener are added. The rest is mainly lactose and fat, a gram or two of each per scoop. Concentrate is the cheapest grade, tastes the creamiest, and suits most people who digest milk comfortably.
What is whey protein isolate?
Isolate is whey filtered further, by microfiltration or ion exchange, until it is 90 per cent or more protein. Most of the lactose and fat are removed, typically leaving under a gram of lactose per serving. It mixes thinner, has a cleaner and less milky taste, and costs more per kilogram, though the gap per gram of protein is smaller than the sticker price suggests. For someone who digests dairy well, isolate offers little beyond a few extra grams of protein per scoop and slightly fewer calories.
What is whey protein hydrolysate?
Hydrolysate is whey that has been partly broken down with enzymes, cutting the long protein chains into shorter peptides, the same process used to make some hypoallergenic infant formulas. The peptides are absorbed slightly faster, which manufacturers present as better recovery, but trials have not shown a meaningful difference in muscle gain for people who eat enough total protein. Hydrolysate tastes noticeably bitter, so products often add more flavouring, and it is the most expensive grade. It earns its place in specific clinical feeds more than in a gym bag.

Every grade starts as milk, so none of them is vegan.
Which type of whey is best for building muscle?
For most people, the one that suits their gut and budget, because total daily protein matters far more than grade. All three are complete proteins rich in leucine, the amino acid most closely tied to switching on muscle building. A 30 g scoop of concentrate delivering 22 to 24 g of protein does essentially the same job as an isolate scoop delivering 26 to 27 g. Is whey isolate better for lactose intolerance?
Usually, yes. With most of the lactose removed, isolate is tolerated by many people who get gas, bloating or loose stools from concentrate. It is not guaranteed lactose-free, and very sensitive people may still react, in which case a plant protein is the next step. Lactose intolerance is also different from milk allergy: someone allergic to cow's milk protein reacts to the whey itself, so neither isolate nor hydrolysate is safe to try without their doctor's advice. Anyone with chronic kidney disease should likewise ask their nephrologist before adding any protein supplement.
What does raw whey mean?
Raw whey is a marketing term, usually for an unflavoured, unsweetened whey concentrate with nothing added. It does not mean uncooked or unprocessed in any technical sense: the milk behind it is normally pasteurised, and the whey is filtered and spray-dried like any other. The appeal is a short ingredient list and a lower price per gram of protein, since you are not paying for flavour. Check the protein percentage all the same, because the word raw says nothing about grade, and some raw products sit at the lower end of the concentrate range.
Is unflavoured whey worth buying?
If you can live with the taste, often yes. Unflavoured whey tastes mildly milky, a little like paneer water, and avoids sweeteners, gums and colours entirely. It blends easily into curd, lassi, smoothies, oats or a mashed banana, and people bloated by flavoured powders sometimes find the switch solves the problem, as described in whether protein powder causes constipation. Stirring it into hot dal or boiling milk makes it clump; heat does not destroy the protein's nutritional value, but texture suffers, so add it once the food has cooled a little.
Is whey protein vegetarian?
Yes. Whey comes from milk, so it fits a lacto-vegetarian diet, and most packaged whey sold in India carries the green dot that FSSAI labelling rules use to mark vegetarian food. It is not vegan. Strict vegetarians sometimes ask about rennet: cheese-making, the main source of commercial whey, can use animal rennet or microbial and fermentation-produced enzymes, and labels rarely say which. A few products also include gelatin in capsules or blends. If this matters to you, the green dot is the first check, and the manufacturer can confirm the enzyme source when asked.
What is casein, and how is it different from whey?
Casein makes up about 80 per cent of the protein in cow's milk, and whey the other 20. Casein forms curds in the stomach and releases its amino acids slowly over several hours, while whey stays liquid and is absorbed quickly. That is why casein powders are sometimes marketed for night-time use. Paneer, cheese and curd are rich in casein, so most Indian vegetarians already eat plenty of it. For most goals, the difference in digestion speed matters less than getting enough protein across the whole day.
How do you read a whey protein label?
Divide the protein per serving by the serving size. A 33 g scoop with 24 g of protein is about 73 per cent protein, typical of concentrate; 27 g in a 30 g scoop is 90 per cent, which is isolate territory. If a tub claims isolate but the arithmetic gives 75 per cent, something is off. Next, compare the amino acid profile, where printed, with the claim: roughly a tenth of whey protein is leucine. Finally, check the FSSAI licence number, the batch number and the full ingredient list, not just the front of the tub.
Reading a tub before you buy it
The front of the tub is advertising. The arithmetic on the back is the part that tells you what grade you are paying for.
Do the division
Protein per serving divided by serving size gives the percentage. A scoop landing near 73 per cent is a concentrate, whatever the label says; 90 per cent is isolate territory.
Read the ingredient order
Ingredients are listed heaviest first, so the first protein named is the largest. Isolate in big letters with concentrate listed first means you are mostly buying concentrate.
Look for added amino acids
Glycine, taurine or a vague amino blend in something sold as pure whey is a reason to put the tub down.
Check the housekeeping
The FSSAI licence number, the batch number and the full ingredient list, not only the claims on the front.
What is amino spiking?
It is a way of inflating the protein figure with cheap amino acids. Protein content is commonly estimated by measuring nitrogen, and every amino acid contains nitrogen, so adding inexpensive free amino acids such as glycine or taurine, or nitrogen-rich compounds such as creatine, raises the measured protein without adding the complete protein you paid for. Warning signs include glycine, taurine or added amino acids in the ingredients of a product sold as pure whey, or a suspiciously high protein claim at a low price. Independent testing of powders sold in India has repeatedly reported products falling short of their label claims.
How can a whey blend hide concentrate?
Through the order of ingredients and the size of the front label. Ingredients must be listed in descending order by weight, so the first protein named is the largest. A tub with isolate in large letters on the front but whey protein concentrate listed first is mostly concentrate. A blend listing isolate first may still be close to half concentrate, since exact proportions are rarely given. Blends are not dishonest in themselves, and they can be good value, but price them as the cheaper ingredient unless the label states the percentages.

The short answer
Concentrate, isolate and hydrolysate are the same milk protein at different levels of filtering and processing. Concentrate is the sensible default, isolate is worth its premium if lactose bothers you, and hydrolysate is rarely worth paying for outside clinical use. Whichever you choose, do the protein-per-scoop arithmetic, read the ingredient order, and be suspicious of added amino acids in a product that claims to be pure whey.
