This article explains what that unit means, why food calories are really kilocalories, where the energy in food comes from and how the body spends it. How many calories you personally need, and how to eat fewer of them, are handled by the pages linked along the way.
What is a calorie, in simple words?
A calorie is a unit for measuring energy. In science, one calorie with a small c is the energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius. That is tiny, far too small to be convenient for food, so nutrition uses a unit a thousand times larger, the kilocalorie. When a label, an app or a dietitian says a chapati has roughly 100 calories, they mean 100 kilocalories. The energy itself sits in the chemical bonds of carbohydrate, fat, protein and alcohol, which the body breaks down to power its cells.
What is a kilocalorie (kcal)?
A kilocalorie is 1,000 small calories: the energy needed to raise 1 kg of water, about a litre, by 1 degree Celsius. It is the unit food scientists actually use, and it is what the word calorie means on every food label, diet chart and fitness tracker. Some older books write it as Calorie with a capital C to mark the difference, though few readers notice the capital. So when someone says they eat 1,800 calories a day, they mean 1,800 kcal, which is 1.8 million small calories.
Are calories and kcal the same thing?
In food and nutrition, yes. Calories and kcal are used interchangeably, and one food calorie equals one kcal. The confusion arises only because physics and chemistry keep the small calorie as a separate unit, and you will never meet that small calorie on a food pack. If a label says 250 kcal and a friend says the same snack has 250 calories, you are both right. The thing worth checking is which quantity the figure refers to, whether per 100 g, per serving or per pack.
What is the difference between kcal and kJ?
They measure the same energy in different units. The kilojoule (kJ) is the metric unit used in science, and 1 kcal equals 4.184 kJ. To convert, multiply kcal by 4.2 for a close estimate, or divide kJ by 4.2 to get back to kcal. Indian packs declare energy in kcal, per 100 g or 100 ml and per serving, and many also print the kJ figure, particularly imported or multinational products. A biscuit listed at 480 kcal per 100 g is about 2,010 kJ. The bigger kJ number describes exactly the same biscuit.
Where do calories in food come from?
From four things: carbohydrate, protein, fat and alcohol. Using the standard Atwater factors, carbohydrate and protein each give about 4 kcal per gram, fat gives about 9 and alcohol about 7. Fibre gives less, roughly 2 kcal per gram, because gut bacteria ferment only part of it. Vitamins, minerals and water supply no calories at all. This is why oil and ghee are so energy-dense: a tablespoon of either, about 14 g, carries around 110 to 125 kcal, while the same weight of cooked dal carries under 20.

How are the calories in food measured?
Originally, by burning food. A bomb calorimeter burns a dried sample in pure oxygen inside a sealed chamber surrounded by water, and the rise in water temperature gives the food's total chemical energy. The body cannot extract all of that, since some is lost in digestion and in urine. In the late nineteenth century the American chemist Wilbur Atwater measured those losses and arrived at the 4, 4 and 9 figures still in use. Today most label values are calculated from a food's carbohydrate, protein and fat content rather than burned in a laboratory.
How does the body use calories?
It spends them in three main ways. Basal metabolism, the energy that keeps the heart beating, the lungs breathing, the brain working and body temperature steady at rest, takes the largest share, commonly 60 to 70 per cent in a fairly inactive adult; the BMR calculator estimates yours. Digesting and processing food uses about 10 per cent, a little more after protein-rich meals. Movement uses the rest and varies the most: formal exercise plus everyday activity such as walking, climbing stairs, cooking and fidgeting. The brain alone accounts for roughly a fifth of resting energy use.
What happens to calories you do not use?
They are stored. The body keeps a modest reserve of carbohydrate as glycogen in the liver and muscles, a few hundred grams in all, and stores most of any further surplus as body fat. Over weeks, taking in more energy than you spend leads to weight gain, and taking in less leads to weight loss, though the body adapts, so the arithmetic is never exact. What is the meaning of calorie in Hindi?
In Hindi a calorie is कैलोरी (kailori), the English word written in Devanagari, and it is described as ऊर्जा की इकाई, a unit of energy. So the common search "calories kya hota hai" has a short answer: कैलोरी भोजन से मिलने वाली ऊर्जा को मापने की इकाई है, which means a calorie is the unit that measures the energy food provides. Tamil also uses the borrowed word, written கலோரி, and most other Indian languages do the same, because the scientific term arrived along with the food labels.
Are calories good or bad?
Neither. Calories are simply energy, and you need a steady supply of them to live, grow, think and move. Too few for too long leads to weight loss, fatigue, lost muscle and, in children, poor growth. Too many for too long leads to weight gain. The source matters as well as the amount: 200 kcal of dal and rice arrives with protein, fibre and minerals, while 200 kcal of a sugary soft drink arrives with little else and barely dents your appetite. Eating well means paying attention to both the number and what comes with it.
What are empty calories?
Empty calories are those that come with little else of nutritional value, mainly from added sugar, refined flour, alcohol and deep-fried snacks. Sugary drinks are the clearest example, because liquid sugar is easy to take in quantity without feeling full. WHO advises keeping free sugars under 10 per cent of total energy, which on a 2,000 kcal day is about 50 g, or roughly 10 to 12 level teaspoons, counting juices and sweets as well as sugar stirred into tea. Such foods are not forbidden; they simply leave less room for the ones that carry nutrients.
What does 2,000 calories look like on an Indian plate?
Very loosely, like an ordinary, fairly generous day. Breakfast of two besan chillas with curd might be 350 to 400 kcal. Two cups of tea with milk and a little sugar add about 150. Lunch of two chapatis, a katori of dal, a sabzi cooked in a teaspoon or two of oil, a small bowl of rice and some curd comes to roughly 650 to 750. A fruit and a handful of roasted chana in the evening add about 200. A dinner like lunch but lighter brings the day to about 2,000. How many calories does an Indian adult need?
It depends on body size, age, sex and activity, and the range is wide. ICMR-NIN's 2020 estimates put a sedentary man of reference body weight at a little over 2,100 kcal a day and a sedentary woman at around 1,650 to 1,700, with physically active workers needing considerably more. Those are population averages, not personal targets. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, growing teenagers and anyone managing a medical condition have different needs and should not cut calories without guidance from their doctor.
