Calories in Nimbu Pani

One glass of nimbu pani has about 73 kcal, with 0.1 g of protein, 19.1 g of carbohydrate and no fat. Of this energy, about 99% comes from carbohydrate, 0% from fat and 1% from protein.

1 glass of nimbu pani is about 3% of the daily energy requirement of a sedentary adult man and 4% of a sedentary adult woman's (ICMR-NIN, 2020).

These figures are from the Indian Nutrient Databank (INDB), which calculates each dish from a standard recipe using Indian food composition data. They describe that recipe and that serving: a larger portion, or more oil, ghee or sugar, gives more. Source: Vijayakumar A, Dubasi HB, Awasthi A, Jaacks LM. 02The number

What this figure covers

The recipe stirs 30 g of lemon juice and 3 tablespoons of sugar into water with a little salt and pours 2 glasses, so each one gets 15 g of juice and 1.5 tablespoons of sugar. That is a properly sweet shikanji of the kind served to guests or sold at a stall. Many people make nimbu pani at home with a teaspoon of sugar, or with salt and roasted cumin and no sugar at all, and for those glasses 73 kcal is too high. The figure belongs to the sweet version and should be read that way.

Few drinks are simpler to explain. Carbohydrate supplies 99% of the energy, protein 1% and fat nothing. All 19.1 g of carbohydrate is sugar, and the 15 g of lemon juice contributes almost none of it. In other words the calories of a nimbu pani are the calories of the sugar stirred into it, and a glass with half the sugar has close to half the calories. The pinch of salt adds no energy.

03The recipe behind it

What goes into one serving

The recipe INDB analysed makes 2 glasses. These are its main ingredients; spices, salt and water are left out.

IngredientIn the recipeIn 1 glass of nimbu pani

04What moves it

What changes the number

  • 01

How much sugar is stirred in

The glass has 1.5 tablespoons of sugar. A level teaspoon is about 16 kcal, so the count moves with every spoon: 89 kcal with one more teaspoon and 105 kcal with two more. Taking the sugar out removes nearly the whole figure.

  • 02

    Sweet, salted or both

Namkeen nimbu pani made with salt, black salt and cumin has only lemon juice to supply any energy, and that is very little. The sweet and salty version, shikanji, keeps the sugar and adds the salt on top.

  • 03

    Soda, syrup and stall versions

Stalls often make it with sugar syrup poured by eye, and a fresh lime soda ordered sweet has syrup at the bottom of the glass. Neither is measured, and both can carry more sugar than the home recipe behind this figure.

  • 04

    Glass size

The recipe fills 2 ordinary glasses. Half a glass is about 36 kcal. A large tumbler or a bottle carried through the day, made to the same sweetness, is two or three of these servings.

06On the plate

In a meal and in a day

One sweet glass of nimbu pani is about 3% of a sedentary man's daily energy requirement and 4% of a woman's. It contributes sugar and water and nothing else of note: 0.1 g of protein, no fat, almost no fibre. That makes it fine as a drink and useless as a snack. Two glasses are 146 kcal and three are 219 kcal, which is how a summer day of sweet nimbu pani quietly adds up. Had unsweetened with a meal, it adds flavour and practically nothing to the count.

Ways to keep it lighter

  • Make it namkeen: lemon, salt, roasted cumin and water, with no sugar.
  • If it has to be sweet, measure 1 level teaspoon of sugar into the glass and stir well.
  • Squeeze in more lemon and add mint, so the glass tastes of more than sweetness.
  • At a stall, ask for less syrup or for the salted version.
07Worth knowing

Before you rely on the number

Sweet nimbu pani is often thought of as a light drink, and against a milkshake it is. But its 19.1 g of sugar is the entire glass, with no protein or fibre alongside, and three glasses carry 57.3 g. People with diabetes should follow their doctor's or dietitian's advice on sweetened drinks, and those limiting salt for blood pressure should ask the same about the salted version.

Food composition is general information, not a diet plan. Anyone managing a medical condition should plan their diet with a doctor or a registered dietitian.

08Questions

Nimbu Pani: common questions

How many calories are in nimbu pani?

About 73 kcal for a sweet glass made with 15 g of lemon juice and 1.5 tablespoons of sugar, by the Indian Nutrient Databank's recipe. A glass made with salt and no sugar has almost none, because lemon juice and water bring very little energy.

How many calories are in nimbu pani without sugar?

Very few. In the sweet recipe the sugar accounts for practically all 73 kcal: 99% of the energy is carbohydrate and all of that carbohydrate is sugar. Leave the sugar out and only the lemon juice is left, 15 g of it, which adds almost nothing.

Is nimbu pani good for weight loss?

Unsweetened or lightly salted nimbu pani is close to water in calorie terms and is a sensible replacement for sweeter drinks. The sweet glass is 73 kcal of sugar. Nothing in the data gives lemon any special effect on weight; any change comes from the whole day's eating and drinking.

How many calories are in 2 glasses of nimbu pani?

Two sweet glasses come to about 146 kcal and 38.2 g of carbohydrate, and three come to 219 kcal. If each glass has an extra teaspoon of sugar, a single glass is already 89 kcal, so the total rises quickly with sweetness.
