Calories in Mango Milkshake

One glass of mango milkshake has about 202 kcal, with 6.1 g of protein, 25.7 g of carbohydrate and 8.3 g of fat. The figure is from the Indian Nutrient Databank and is for a tall glass blended from 180 ml of milk, 50 g of ripe mango and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Thick shop-style shakes with more pulp are heavier.

Of this energy, about 51% comes from carbohydrate, 37% from fat and 12% from protein.

1 glass of mango milkshake is about 10% of the daily energy requirement of a sedentary adult man and 12% of a sedentary adult woman's (ICMR-NIN, 2020).

These figures are from the Indian Nutrient Databank (INDB), which calculates each dish from a standard recipe using Indian food composition data. They describe that recipe and that serving: a larger portion, or more oil, ghee or sugar, gives more. Source: Vijayakumar A, Dubasi HB, Awasthi A, Jaacks LM. 02The number

What this figure covers

One glass, one recipe: 180 ml of milk, 50 g of mango flesh and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Fifty grams is a few cubes, far less than the cheek of a mango, so this is flavoured sweet milk more than it is blended fruit. The mango shake sold at juice stalls in season is built the other way round: thick with pulp, often made from tinned sweetened pulp, and topped with cream, ice cream or dry fruits. Those versions are not what the 202 kcal describes. It describes a thin home shake in a tall glass.

Carbohydrate supplies 51% of the energy, fat 37% and protein 12%. Almost all of the 25.7 g of carbohydrate is sugar of one kind or another: the tablespoon that is added, the mango's, and the milk's. Fat, at 8.3 g, comes from the milk alone, since mango has almost none. The milk also supplies the 6.1 g of protein. So more than a third of the energy in a mango shake has nothing to do with mango or sugar; it is the fat of the milk it is blended with.

03The recipe behind it

What goes into one serving

The recipe INDB analysed makes 1 glass. These are its main ingredients; spices, salt and water are left out.

04What moves it

What changes the number

  • 01

    Pulp: fresh or tinned

The recipe uses 50 g of fresh mango. Tinned and bottled mango pulp is usually sweetened, so a shake made from it carries added sugar before any is spooned in. A shake thick with fresh pulp has more fruit sugar but can do without the tablespoon of sugar.

  • 02

    Added sugar

A ripe Alphonso or Dasheri hardly needs help, yet the recipe adds 1 tablespoon. Each extra teaspoon is about 16 kcal: 218 kcal with one more and 234 kcal with two. Leaving the sugar out takes the glass below the reference figure.

  • 03

    Milk fat

Fat is 37% of the energy, and all of it is from 180 ml of milk. Full-cream or buffalo milk raises it, toned or skimmed milk lowers it, and the protein stays about the same either way.

  • 04

    Cream and ice cream

Mango shake at a stall is often finished with malai, fresh cream or a scoop of ice cream, and sometimes chopped nuts. These add fat and sugar that the home recipe does not have. Ask what goes in before counting it as 202 kcal.

In a meal and in a day

A glass of this mango shake is about 10% of a sedentary man's daily energy requirement and 12% of a woman's. In mango season it is often an extra, taken after lunch or with an evening snack, and that is how two glasses and 404 kcal slip into a day unnoticed. It does give 6.1 g of protein and the calcium that milk carries, so as a replacement for an evening snack it earns its place. As a dessert after a full meal, a few slices of the mango itself would give the taste for far less.

Ways to keep it lighter

  • Let the mango provide the sweetness and leave the sugar out.
  • Blend with toned milk and ice in place of full-cream milk.
  • Use fresh mango in place of tinned sweetened pulp.
  • Say no to the cream and ice cream topping at juice stalls.
  • Have it in place of the evening snack, not in addition to it.
07Worth knowing

Before you rely on the number

Mango shake is a seasonal habit, and the habit matters more than the single glass: one a day through the mango season is a steady addition of sugar and milk fat. A glass has 25.4 g of sugars and 8.3 g of fat, all of it milk fat. People with diabetes are often unsure about mango; the right amount for them, in a shake or as fruit, is for their doctor or dietitian to set.

Food composition is general information, not a diet plan. Anyone managing a medical condition should plan their diet with a doctor or a registered dietitian.

08Questions

Mango Milkshake: common questions

How many calories are in a glass of mango shake?

About 202 kcal for a tall glass made with 180 ml of milk, 50 g of mango and 1 tablespoon of sugar, by the Indian Nutrient Databank's recipe. A thicker shake with more pulp, sweetened tinned pulp, cream or ice cream will be well above that.

How much protein is in a mango milkshake?

About 6.1 g in one glass, supplied by the milk. Protein accounts for 12% of the energy. Two glasses give 12.2 g along with 404 kcal, so it is a pleasant way to take milk but not an efficient way to get protein.

Is mango milkshake good for weight loss?

It can be worked in, but a 202 kcal glass with added sugar is not a light drink. It fits better as a planned snack than as an extra with meals. Without the sugar and on toned milk it is lighter. Weight is decided by the day's total, not by the shake.

Does a mango shake have more calories than a banana shake?

Slightly fewer in these recipes: 202 kcal for mango against 226 kcal for banana, both blended with milk and sugar. The gap comes from the fruit, since banana is starchier. With the fruit doubled or ice cream added, either shake moves well past these figures.
