Calories in Jal Jeera
One glass of jal jeera has about 42 kcal, with 0.6 g of protein, 9.4 g of carbohydrate and 0.4 g of fat. The figure is from the Indian Nutrient Databank and is for a small juice glass flavoured with 5 g of tamarind, mint, lemon and 5 g of sugar. It is a light drink, though a salty one.
Nutrition in 1 glass of jal jeera
| Nutrient | 1 glass of jal jeera | 2 glasses of jal jeera |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | 42 kcal | 84 kcal |
| Protein | 0.6 g | 1.2 g |
| Carbohydrate (available) | 9.4 g | 18.8 g |
| Total fat | 0.4 g | 0.8 g |
| Dietary fibre | 1.3 g | 2.6 g |
| Sugars | 8 g | 16 g |
Of this energy, about 86% comes from carbohydrate, 8% from fat and 6% from protein.
1 glass of jal jeera is about 2% of the daily energy requirement of a sedentary adult man and 3% of a sedentary adult woman's (ICMR-NIN, 2020).
These figures are from the Indian Nutrient Databank (INDB), which calculates each dish from a standard recipe using Indian food composition data. They describe that recipe and that serving: a larger portion, or more oil, ghee or sugar, gives more. Source: Vijayakumar A, Dubasi HB, Awasthi A, Jaacks LM. Development of an Indian Food Composition Database. Current Developments in Nutrition. 2024;8(7):103790 (Indian Nutrient Databank, INDB).
What this figure covers
The recipe is made by the jug: 30 g of tamarind, 15 g of mint leaves, 15 g of lemon and 30 g of sugar, ground with roasted cumin and salt and stirred into water to make 6 glasses. One glass therefore has 5 g of tamarind and 5 g of sugar, with 2.5 g each of mint and lemon. The serving the databank uses is a juice glass, which is smaller than a tall tumbler. A big glass at a chaat stall, or a jug poured at home, is more than one of these servings, though at 42 kcal each the total stays modest.
Carbohydrate supplies 86% of the energy, fat 8% and protein 6%. Of the 9.4 g of carbohydrate, 8 g is counted as sugar, and it comes from two places: the 5 g of added sugar and the tamarind's own. The tamarind and mint also account for the 1.3 g of fibre, a small amount that is unusual in a drink. What stands out is not a calorie figure at all but the salt and black salt that give jal jeera its taste.
What goes into one serving
The recipe INDB analysed makes 6 glasses. These are its main ingredients; spices, salt and water are left out.
| Ingredient | In the recipe | In 1 glass of jal jeera |
|---|---|---|
| Tamarind | 30 g | 5 g |
| Mint leaves | 15 g | 2.5 g |
| Cumin seeds | 10 g | 1.5 g |
| Lemon | 15 g | 2.5 g |
| Sugar | 30 g | 5 g |
What changes the number
- 01
Sugar to balance the tang
The recipe uses 5 g of sugar a glass, a little over a level teaspoon's 4 g. Sweeter versions exist: one more teaspoon brings the glass to 58 kcal and two more to 74 kcal. Some cooks leave the sugar out and rely on the tamarind.
- 02
Boondi on top
Jal jeera is often served with a spoonful of boondi floating in it. Boondi is fried gram-flour batter, so it adds fat and some starch that the plain drink does not have. It is not part of the 42 kcal.
- 03
Packet masala
Ready-made jal jeera powder varies: some are mostly salt and spice, others contain sugar. The amount spooned into the glass decides both the calories and the sodium, so the packet's label is the guide for those.
- 04
The glass
The figure is for a juice glass. Half of one is about 21 kcal. Two glasses come to 84 kcal and three to 126 kcal, which is still less than many single glasses of sweeter drinks.

In a meal and in a day
A glass is about 2% of a sedentary man's daily energy requirement and 3% of a woman's, so as calories it hardly registers. It is usually taken before or alongside a meal as an appetiser, and it does not add anything a meal needs: 0.6 g of protein and 1.3 g of fibre. Three glasses come to 126 kcal. What it adds in real quantity is salt, so it sits more comfortably next to a simple home meal than next to chaat, pickles and papad, which are salty already.
Ways to keep it lighter
- Leave out the sugar and let the tamarind and lemon do the work.
- Skip the boondi, or keep it to a small pinch for crunch.
- Use less salt and black salt and more mint and roasted cumin.
- Make it fresh at home so the salt and sugar are measured by you and not by a packet.
Before you rely on the number
The caveat with jal jeera is salt, not calories. Even one small glass is well salted, and a large glass or a second helping takes that higher. For most people this is fine now and then. People asked to limit salt because of high blood pressure, or a heart or kidney condition, should check with their doctor or dietitian, and can make it at home with far less salt.
Food composition is general information, not a diet plan. Anyone managing a medical condition should plan their diet with a doctor or a registered dietitian.
Jal Jeera: common questions
How many calories are in a glass of jal jeera?
About 42 kcal for a juice glass, by the Indian Nutrient Databank's recipe, which uses 5 g of tamarind and 5 g of sugar a glass. Nearly all of it is carbohydrate, 9.4 g. Boondi or extra sugar would add to it.
Is jal jeera good for weight loss?
It is a low-calorie drink, 42 kcal a glass, so it is a lighter choice than a sharbat or a soft drink. The data shows no effect on body fat beyond that. What it replaces matters more than the drink itself, and weight depends on the full day's intake.
Does jal jeera have a lot of salt?
Yes, for its size. Salt and black salt are what give the drink its taste, and the recipe's ingredient list leaves them out because they add no energy, so the data puts no figure on it. Two glasses double whatever one holds. Making it at home with less salt and more mint, cumin and lemon keeps the flavour and brings the salt down.
Jal jeera or nimbu pani: which has fewer calories?
Jal jeera, in these recipes: 42 kcal a glass against 73 kcal for a sweet nimbu pani and 96 kcal for aam panna. The reason is sugar. Jal jeera has 5 g of it in a glass and gets most of its taste from tamarind, salt and spice.
