The NNWA journal

Every friend group has a sworn hangover cure, usually involving a greasy paratha. The research is unkind to all of them: a hangover is mostly inflammation and broken sleep, and breakfast can ease it but cannot erase it.

Hangover Food: What to Eat and Drink the Morning After, With Indian Options

The morning after a sangeet, a Diwali card party or a New Year's Eve that went on too long, the questions are practical. What can I eat that will stay down, what should I drink, and will anything make this end sooner. Every household has its own answer, from nimbu pani to a plate of chole bhature. Some of those answers help a little, a few make things worse, and none works the way its champions believe.

This page sets out what a hangover actually is, which Indian foods and drinks suit a stomach that has been through a night of alcohol, what trials show about remedies, and the signs that mean a hospital rather than a breakfast.

What causes a hangover?

A hangover is mainly the body's inflammatory response to alcohol, made worse by poor sleep, an irritated stomach and acetaldehyde, the toxic compound alcohol is first broken down into. Symptoms peak around the time blood alcohol falls back to zero, which is why they arrive in the morning. A 2010 review in Current Drug Abuse Reviews found that hormones, electrolytes, glucose and markers of dehydration did not track how bad people felt, while immune signals did. A 2020 analysis in the Journal of Clinical Medicine re-examined two studies and found hangover severity rose with blood levels of the inflammatory markers IL-6 and C-reactive protein, and with markers of oxidative stress. Alcohol also fragments sleep in the second half of the night.

Is dehydration the real cause of a hangover?

No, dehydration travels alongside a hangover rather than causing it. Alcohol suppresses vasopressin, the hormone that tells the kidneys to hold on to water, so you pass more urine and wake with a dry mouth. A 2024 review by Mackus and colleagues in the journal Alcohol concluded that the two are separate consequences of drinking: dehydration effects were usually mild and short-lived, while the hangover lasted much longer. In survey data, water drunk during or straight after alcohol had only a modest preventive effect, and the amount of water drunk the next morning made no difference to how severe the hangover was. Water still relieves thirst and a headache made worse by it. It simply is not the cure.

What is the best thing to eat the morning after?

The best morning-after food is bland, soft, a little salty and mostly carbohydrate with some protein, eaten in small amounts once the nausea allows. That combination is easy on an irritated stomach, replaces some of the sodium lost overnight and gives steady energy after broken sleep. Alcohol also stops the liver making new glucose for some hours, so a few people feel shaky until they eat, even though low blood sugar does not explain the hangover itself. Start with something plain, a few spoons of khichdi or a dry toast, and wait twenty minutes. If it stays down, build towards a normal breakfast. After vomiting, what to eat after vomiting gives a slower sequence.

The morning-after plan, from waking to dinner

  1. Start with sips, not a meal

Take water in small sips on waking. If you have vomited, switch to ORS made up exactly as the packet directs.

  2. Try something plain

A few spoons of khichdi, a dry toast or half a banana, then wait twenty minutes to see whether it settles.

  3. Build a soft, salty breakfast

Idli with thin sambar, poha with peanuts, curd rice or egg bhurji on toast, in a small portion.

  4. Keep fluids going

Water, coconut water, nimbu pani with a pinch of salt or thin chaas through the day, plus your usual tea or coffee.

  5. Rest, then eat a normal dinner

Sleep if you can, take a short walk, and be back on dal, rice, sabzi and curd by evening.

Indian breakfasts that suit a hangover stomach

Indian kitchens already hold excellent hangover food, because so much of it is steamed, soft and salted. Moong dal khichdi with a spoon of curd is close to ideal, with starch, protein, salt and fluid in one bowl, and a pressure cooker turns out vegetable khichdi in about twenty minutes. Idli with thin sambar offers the same comfort in the south. Poha with peanuts and a squeeze of lemon is quick and light as long as the tempering is not oily. Curd rice soothes many people, although very sour curd can sting an acidic stomach. Egg bhurji on toast suits those who can face protein, and a banana is a fair start for anyone who cannot cook at all.

What should you drink for a hangover?

Plain water first, sipped steadily, then something with a little salt and sugar if you have been sick or feel faint. Oral rehydration solution from a chemist, made up exactly as the packet says, is the most balanced option. At home, nimbu pani with a pinch of salt and a spoon of sugar, or a glass of thin salted buttermilk, does a similar job less precisely; a masala chaas with roasted jeera sits well with most stomachs. Tea or coffee is fine if you normally drink it, since missing your usual cup adds a caffeine-withdrawal headache to everything else. Skip strong black coffee on an empty, burning stomach, and skip energy drinks altogether.

Is coconut water good for a hangover?

Coconut water is a reasonable hangover drink but not a special one. It is mostly water with natural sugar and a useful amount of potassium, around 40 to 60 kcal a glass depending on the nut, and many people find it easier to get down than plain water when they feel queasy. It is low in sodium, though, and sodium is the main salt lost in urine and vomit, so it does not replace ORS after repeated vomiting. Drinking it cool, in small sips, often helps nausea. What coconut water does and does not offer more generally is covered in coconut water benefits. Anyone with kidney disease who has been told to limit potassium should ask their doctor before drinking it freely.

Do greasy foods cure a hangover?

No. A plate of chole bhature, an aloo paratha dripping with butter or a fried egg sandwich feels like the right answer, and it does deliver salt and calories, but fat slows stomach emptying and heavy chilli can inflame a stomach lining that alcohol has already irritated. For some people that means more nausea, reflux and loose motions by midday. The craving itself is real, partly because short sleep raises appetite for dense food. If a paratha is all you can face, have one, cooked with a little oil and eaten with curd rather than pickle and extra butter. The belief that grease cures a hangover survives mostly because eating it feels like doing something.

Does eating before drinking prevent a hangover?

Eating before drinking does not prevent a hangover, but it softens the night. Food in the stomach slows the rate at which alcohol reaches the small intestine, where most of it is absorbed, so blood alcohol rises more slowly and peaks lower. That usually means less drunkenness, fewer poor decisions and often less vomiting. It does not change how much alcohol the liver eventually has to clear, which it does at roughly one standard drink an hour whatever you eat or drink. A proper meal with protein before a party, as described in eating at a wedding buffet, and water between drinks are sensible habits. Neither makes a heavy session safe.

Do hangover pills, detox drinks or supplements work?

None has convincing evidence behind it. A 2005 systematic review in the BMJ found eight controlled trials of eight different remedies, from artichoke extract to prickly pear, and concluded that no conventional or complementary treatment had been shown to work; moderation or abstinence was the only reliable prevention. A 2022 review in the journal Addiction found 21 placebo-controlled trials with 386 participants. Single studies reported benefits for clove extract, pyritinol, L-cysteine, red ginseng and Korean pear juice, but every efficacy result was rated very low quality and no two trials tested the same thing. The sachets, tablets and liver detox drinks sold for mornings after rest on that thin base.

Are some drinks worse for hangovers than others?

Somewhat, although the amount matters far more than the type. Dark spirits such as whisky, brandy and dark rum contain more congeners, the by-products of fermentation and ageing, than vodka or gin. In a 2010 study in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, young adults given bourbon or vodka to the same blood alcohol level felt worse after bourbon, but their next-day attention and reaction speed were equally impaired after both. A clear spirit may feel kinder while leaving you just as unfit to drive. For scale, a 30 ml peg of Indian whisky at 42.8 per cent holds about 10 g of alcohol, and a 650 ml bottle of strong beer at around 8 per cent carries about 40 g, the same as four pegs.

Can you take a painkiller for a hangover?

Check with a pharmacist or doctor before reaching for the strip, because both common options carry specific risks after drinking. Aspirin and ibuprofen are anti-inflammatory painkillers that can irritate or ulcerate a stomach lining already inflamed by alcohol. Paracetamol is gentler on the stomach but is processed by the liver, and people who drink heavily or regularly are more vulnerable to its liver toxicity, particularly with repeated doses or when they have not been eating. Never combine several cold or pain products that each contain paracetamol. Anyone on regular medicines for blood pressure, diabetes, epilepsy or mood should ask how alcohol interacts with them before the next party, not the morning after.

When a hangover is actually an emergency

Some morning-after states are alcohol poisoning or something worse, and they need a hospital, not food. Take someone to emergency care if they cannot be woken, are confused, have slow or irregular breathing, have a seizure, or keep vomiting and cannot hold down even sips of water. Vomit containing blood or dark material like coffee grounds, severe upper abdominal pain spreading to the back, or yellowing eyes also need urgent assessment. India adds one more warning. Illicit or unlabelled liquor can contain methanol, and blurred or darkened vision, breathlessness or severe abdominal pain some hours after drinking it is an emergency, even if the person seemed well at first.

What repeated hangovers say about your liver

A hangover lasts a morning, but frequent heavy drinking sets up damage that does not announce itself. Fat builds up in liver cells within weeks of regular heavy intake, and over years it can progress to inflammation and scarring with few symptoms along the way. The Global Burden of Disease analysis published in The Lancet in 2018 concluded that the level of drinking that minimised overall health loss was zero, which is a population finding rather than a moral one. If hangovers arrive monthly or weekly, the useful question is the drinking pattern, not the breakfast. The diet side of a fatty liver is covered in the fatty liver diet chart.

How long does a hangover last?

Most hangovers ease within 24 hours and are worst in the morning, once blood alcohol is back to zero. Recovery is slower after a very heavy night, after very little sleep, and in people who are older or already unwell. Food, fluid and rest make the hours more bearable without shortening them much. Symptoms still severe the following day, or returning after every small drink, deserve a check-up. So do shaking, sweating, anxiety and a racing heart on the morning after in someone who drinks daily, because that can be alcohol withdrawal rather than a hangover, and withdrawal can turn dangerous without medical care.

Why the liver deserves a proper course of study

Morning-after advice sounds simple until a client mentions fatty liver on a scan, raised enzymes, a painkiller habit or a family history of alcohol problems. Knowing what to say, and when to send someone back to their doctor, is the judgement NNWA's Liver and Digestive Health Nutrition course teaches at intermediate level, over four to six weeks of live classes with recordings kept for life. The fee is Rs 12,999 against a listed Rs 18,999, with EMI of about Rs 1,083 a month, and it carries an NNWA certificate. The medicine section of this page was reviewed by Sandeep Ojha, a registered pharmacist with an M.Pharm in pharmacology. For personal advice rather than study, practitioners at NNWA's clinic offer everyday diet consultations, without treating liver disease or changing medicines.

The short version

Sip water, then ORS, salted nimbu pani or chaas if you have been sick. Eat small, bland, salty meals such as khichdi with curd, idli with sambar or poha, and leave the parathas and pickle for another day. Rest, because lost sleep is part of the damage. Treat pills and detox drinks as unproven, and get advice before taking painkillers. Go to hospital for confusion, repeated vomiting, blood, severe abdominal pain, or any change in vision after unlabelled liquor. And if the morning after is becoming a routine, the thing to change is the night before.
