NNWA's water intake calculator estimates a daily fluid range from body weight, exercise duration and working conditions, using about 30 to 35 millilitres per kilogram plus additions for activity and heat. It covers all fluid, not water alone.
The eight-glasses rule has no evidential basis and does not survive contact with Indian conditions. A sixty-kilogram office worker in an air-conditioned building in December and a ninety-kilogram labourer working outdoors in May need very different amounts, and a single number for both is useless to both.
This calculator starts from body weight, adds for exercise, and adds again for the conditions you are actually in. It reports a range rather than a figure, because the underlying evidence supports a range and any tool implying more precision than that is inventing it.

The base is roughly 30 to 35 millilitres of total fluid per kilogram of body weight per day, which is the working range used in most clinical nutrition practice for healthy adults. Exercise adds about 400 millilitres per half hour of activity, and the conditions setting adds between nothing and 1.2 litres depending on heat, humidity and whether you are outdoors.
One point that changes how you should read the output: **this is total fluid, not water alone.** Tea, coffee, buttermilk, milk, dal, rasam, sambar, curd, fruit and vegetables all count. Roughly a fifth of most people's fluid intake arrives in food rather than in a glass, which is why targets expressed as glasses of water are consistently misleading.
02The check that beats the calculation
Urine colour. Pale straw through the day means you are adequately hydrated; dark yellow means you are not. It is free, immediate, responsive to today rather than to an average, and more reliable than any formula — including this one.
Thirst is a reasonable secondary signal for most healthy adults, with two exceptions worth knowing. Older adults have a blunted thirst response and can become dehydrated without feeling thirsty, which is a genuine and under-recognised problem. And during hard exercise in heat, thirst lags behind actual losses, which is why athletes are told to drink to a schedule rather than to thirst.
03Why this matters more in India
Heat and humidity across most of the country produce fluid losses through sweat that people routinely fail to replace, and the effect is worst for exactly the people least able to stop and drink — outdoor and manual workers, drivers, kitchen staff, and anyone whose working day makes a water break awkward.
The consequences are not trivial. Concentrated urine is the central mechanism in kidney stone formation, and parts of northern and western India have unusually high stone prevalence largely for climate and fluid-intake reasons rather than dietary ones. This section matters more than the rest of the page. **Anyone with heart failure, kidney disease, liver disease or a condition for which a doctor has restricted fluid must follow that restriction rather than this calculator.** In those conditions drinking to a general target is not merely unhelpful; it can cause real harm.
Excessive water intake in healthy people is also possible, though rare. Drinking very large volumes quickly can dilute blood sodium to dangerous levels, a risk that appears most often in endurance athletes who over-drink during long events. Spreading intake through the day rather than consuming large amounts at once avoids it entirely.
05What a practitioner does with this number
Hydration is one of the few areas where the intervention is behavioural rather than nutritional: almost nobody fails to drink enough because they do not know they should. They fail because water is not within reach at the moment they would have drunk it.
So what a practitioner actually does is find the friction — the job without a break, the bottle left in another room, the office where the cooler is two floors down — and remove it. That, and knowing which clients must not follow a general target, is the part of this that requires training rather than arithmetic. How much water should I drink a day in India?
For most healthy adults, roughly 30 to 35 millilitres of total fluid per kilogram of body weight, plus about 400 millilitres per half hour of exercise, plus more in heat or outdoor work. For a 65 kg adult in warm conditions with moderate exercise that lands somewhere around 2.5 to 3.5 litres of total fluid, including tea, dal and the water in food.
Does tea or coffee count towards water intake?
Yes. The mild diuretic effect of caffeine at ordinary intakes does not outweigh the fluid the drink supplies, so tea and coffee contribute to your total. The caveat is not hydration but timing: tea with meals substantially reduces iron absorption, which matters in a country with very high anaemia rates, so it is worth moving it an hour away from iron-rich meals.
Is eight glasses of water a day correct?
It is a rule of thumb with no real evidential basis, and it ignores body weight, activity and climate — all three of which change the answer substantially. It also counts only water, when roughly a fifth of most people's fluid arrives in food. A weight-based range checked against urine colour is considerably more useful.
