Education & Childcare

The PE teacher who worked out that the ground was not the problem

Yes, within limits worth stating. A PE teacher already prescribes training to growing children and is asked constantly about food. NNWA's Sports Nutrition course supplies fuelling, hydration, adolescent requirements and a referral line, which makes the existing job safer rather than creating a new licence to prescribe anything.

Can a PE teacher become a sports nutritionist?

Yes. NNWA's Sports Nutrition course gives a PE teacher fuelling, hydration and adolescent growth properly taught. It does not make a school ground a clinic, and minors bring rules a coach must not bend.

The only adult in the school who watches children move

The ground opens before six. In the winter months that means mist over the Patna maidan and about thirty children, the school's squad for the district meet, warming up while the rest of the city is still asleep. Then assembly drill, then the ordinary timetable: two periods a week for each section, forty minutes, eighty children, one volleyball court, one long jump pit that needs digging out again, and a cricket net that the Class 12 boys have colonised.

Satish Kumar has taught physical education for eleven years. Nothing in his week is theoretical. He sees which children can hold a plank and which cannot get off the floor. He sees the boy who is fast over twenty metres and finished at sixty. He sees which girls stop turning up to practice after Class 9 and could name the reasons in order. When the fitness assessment comes round and the school has to record endurance, strength and flexibility scores for every child, he is the person entering them, which means he also knows precisely how many of his students cannot run for six minutes without stopping.

He is, in other words, the one member of staff holding a continuous physical record of the children in that building. He is also the one member of staff with no training in what those children eat.

The squad, and the boy who wants a seat

Two groups make the food question urgent rather than merely interesting. The first is the meet squad: children who train before school and again after four, through a Bihar summer that reaches the point where the air itself is an obstacle. The second is smaller and more anxious. Every year a handful of boys decide that sport is the route to a college seat or a services selection, and they train with an intensity nobody has supervised and an idea of diet assembled entirely from other boys.

Those boys come to him with questions he had no reliable way to answer. What should I eat before a trial. My chest is not building, should I take something. I have to make the weight category by Friday, what do I do. Sir, is sattu enough, my father says it is enough.

The three questions that kept arriving

Making the weight by Friday

Anaemia in women aged 15-4957%
Men aged 15-4925%

The senior girls a PE teacher trains sit inside this band. It is the most likely single explanation for a girl whose endurance has fallen away over two terms, and it is routinely read on a school ground as lost interest instead.

Wrestling, judo, boxing and weightlifting all run on categories, and the practice around them in school-level sport is genuinely dangerous. A fifteen-year-old decides he is two kilograms over, so he stops drinking water, trains in a plastic sheet under a tracksuit, skips the evening meal and spits into a bottle through the afternoon. He makes the category, competes dehydrated, and performs worse than he would have done a category higher. Satish knew this was wrong. He did not know enough to replace it with anything, and telling a boy not to do the only method he has heard of is not a plan.

The tiredness that gets called laziness

Every PE teacher has a list of children who used to train and stopped. The staff room explanation is that they lost interest or that the family put a stop to it. Some of that is true. Some of it is a fifteen-year-old girl whose performance has been declining for two terms, who is breathless on the warm-up run she used to lead, and who has been told at home that she is simply weak. Iron deficiency was not a category Satish had, so a child who was becoming anaemic looked to him exactly like a child losing motivation.

The tin bought at the gym near the stadium

Protein powder reaches a school ground through older brothers and through gyms, and it arrives with claims and no supervision. So does creatine, so do the things sold as mass gainers, and occasionally so does something with an ingredient list that would not survive being read aloud. Boys asked him whether to take them. He said no, because no is the safe answer, and he could not say why, which meant the answer lasted until the next boy in the group said yes.

Where a physical education degree stops

A bachelor's in physical education is a real qualification and it carries the body properly: anatomy, exercise physiology, methods of training, test and measurement, sports psychology, officiating, the rules and skills of the games themselves. Nutrition appears in it as a unit. The unit names the macronutrients, states that carbohydrate is the working fuel, mentions hydration, and finishes.

What it leaves out is everything that turns those facts into an instruction for a specific child in a specific month. It does not cover what a growing adolescent needs before the training load is added on top, or why a girl's iron requirement changes once she begins menstruating, or what happens to growth and to bone when a young athlete trains hard on an intake that is chronically short. It gives no method for turning a requirement into a plate assembled out of what a Patna household actually cooks. And it says nothing about how to handle a parent who has decided that milk with a spoonful of a branded powder is the complete answer.

The second gap is institutional. A PE teacher who talks about food without a source behind him is offering an opinion, and in a school an opinion from the games master ranks below an opinion from anybody else. The hostel warden, the class teacher and the mother all overrule it comfortably.

What a sports nutrition course changed before six in the morning

Fuelling built from food that exists in the house

Adults living with prediabetes in India

School physical education is the only structured activity most Indians ever get. A teacher looking at a Class 9 group is looking at the cohort this figure is drawn from in twenty years, which is the argument for treating the subject as health teaching rather than as games.

The most practical change was the smallest. Before a morning session the squad now eats something rather than nothing, and the something is local, cheap and repeatable: chura with curd, a banana, sattu made properly, gur and roasted chana in winter. After a hard session there is a window in which what a child eats matters more than at any other point in the day, and that window was being wasted entirely because everybody went home to bathe and reached the kitchen ninety minutes later. Rearranging that costs nothing and is the single biggest difference the course made to the squad.

Weight categories without dehydration

Satish now runs the category question in the other direction. The decision is taken weeks out, not on the Wednesday, and it starts with which category the child can reach without cutting fluid at all, because in a growing athlete the honest answer is usually the category he is already in. Where a reduction is genuinely appropriate, it happens slowly and it stops well before the weigh-in. He can explain to a boy what dehydration does to strength, to concentration and to the heat tolerance he will need on the mat, and a boy who is told the mechanism argues less than a boy who is simply forbidden.

Fatigue treated as a question

The largest change is in how he reads a child who is going backwards. Declining endurance, breathlessness on easy work, pallor, a girl whose periods have become irregular since the training load went up: these now trigger a conversation with the family and a recommendation to see a doctor and have it investigated, rather than a note in his head that the child has lost interest. He does not diagnose anything and does not attempt to. He notices earlier, and he says the useful sentence, which is that this needs a blood test rather than more effort.

The supplement answer acquired a reason

He can now explain what a protein requirement for a fifteen-year-old actually is, roughly how much of it an ordinary Bihari diet with dal, sattu, eggs and milk already supplies, and therefore why the tin is solving a problem the boy does not have. He can also say the part that lands hardest: that products in this category are not tested batch by batch for what else is in them, and that a competitor who fails a test at a national event does not get to explain that he did not know.

Adults with abdominal obesity in India

Fitness testing shows a PE teacher what a weight reading hides: children of ordinary weight who cannot run for six minutes. Knowing that this pattern is widespread in Indian adults explains why the test result matters more than the child's appearance.

The season is the constraint. From November through February there are meets almost every fortnight, and around the board examinations the ground empties and the PE teacher is on invigilation duty. The clean stretch is the summer break, and the second clean stretch is the monsoon, when the ground is unusable anyway.

NNWA's Sports Nutrition course is taught live in English and Hindi with every session recorded and lifetime access, so Satish took most of it in the summer and caught up on the rest by recording during meet season. Short course fees are shared before you sign up, with instalment options, and it is worth being accurate about what the certificate is: short courses carry the NNWA certificate, while the Medhavi Skills University award belongs to the flagship programmes. He added Child & Adolescent Nutrition afterwards, which is the one that actually matches a school ground, since most of what he supervises is a growing body first and an athlete second. Fitness Nutrition Specialist came later for the adult work he does in the evenings.

What a PE teacher must not do

The limits here are sharper than in most professions, because the athletes are minors and because the teacher has authority over them.

He does not put a child on a weight-loss plan. A school ground is not a place to set a body weight target for a fourteen-year-old, and a teacher who does that is taking on something that can go badly wrong in a way he will not see. Where a child's weight genuinely needs attention, it goes through the family and a doctor, with the school supporting whatever they decide.

He does not supply, sell or recommend supplements to students. That is not a cautious position, it is the only defensible one, and it holds even when a parent asks him to.

He does not manage a child who is restricting food, exercising compulsively or showing signs of a disordered relationship with eating. That belongs to a specialist team, the family and a doctor, and the teacher's job is to raise it early and quietly with the head of school rather than to handle it on the ground.

And he keeps a clear line between the school and the private coaching work a nutrition qualification makes possible. Advice offered to a school child in school hours is part of the teaching post; anything beyond that, with a family that has approached him separately, is a different arrangement and should look like one.

I had spent eleven years correcting how a boy runs. Nobody had ever asked me what he had eaten before he ran.

01What the training makes possible

What a physical education teacher can do with this

Capabilities, not earnings. NNWA does not publish income claims, because it cannot verify them.

  • Fuelling around the session

Time what the squad eats before and after early training, using chura, curd, sattu, eggs and fruit rather than anything bought.

  • Weight categories handled safely

Plan a category weeks ahead without fluid cutting, and explain to a young athlete what dehydration costs him on the mat.

  • Declining performance investigated

Recognise the pattern that suggests iron deficiency and send it to the family and a doctor instead of recording it as lost interest.

  • A supplement answer with a mechanism

Explain what an adolescent's protein requirement is, what the household diet already gives, and why contamination risk settles the matter.

  • Evening coaching with a qualification behind it

Support adults and older athletes outside school hours on fuelling and everyday eating, separately from the teaching post.

02Straight answers

Questions a physical education teacher asks first

Can a PE teacher become a sports nutritionist in India?

A PE teacher can qualify in sports nutrition and advise athletes and general clients on fuelling, hydration and everyday eating. Medical nutrition therapy for a diagnosed condition remains with doctors and clinical dietitians, and minors bring extra limits a teacher has to respect.

Which course should a school PE teacher take first?

Sports Nutrition, because it answers the questions that arrive on the ground. Child & Adolescent Nutrition is the natural second, since school athletes are growing bodies before they are competitors, and it covers growth, iron and the adolescent spurt properly.

Should a PE teacher recommend protein supplements to students?

No. Students are minors, products in that category are not verified batch by batch for contamination, and a teacher holds authority over the child. The defensible position is to explain requirements and let food meet them.

How do I handle a student cutting weight for a category?

Plan the category weeks in advance rather than days, rule out fluid restriction entirely, and accept that a growing athlete usually belongs in the category he already occupies. Any reduction should end well before the weigh-in.

Can a PE teacher tell if a student is anaemic?

No, and should not try. What training gives is the ability to notice the pattern early, falling endurance, breathlessness on easy work, pallor, and to tell the family plainly that this needs a blood test rather than more training.

Does a sports nutrition certificate come with the university award?

Short courses carry the NNWA certificate. The Medhavi Skills University Certificate for Skill Competency comes with the flagship diploma programmes, and that distinction is stated rather than blurred when the certificate is described.

When can a teacher fit the study into a school year?

Most teachers use the summer break and the monsoon weeks when the ground is unusable, then keep up through the meet season on recordings. Every session is recorded with lifetime access, so an away fixture costs nothing but the live class.

Is this useful for a PE teacher who does not coach a squad?

Yes. Most of the value sits in ordinary class work: reading fitness test results properly, answering parents at the open day, advising staff, and knowing which tired child needs a doctor rather than encouragement.
