DNA-based diet tests are sold hard in Indian cities, and courses promising to teach nutrigenomics have followed. The science is genuinely interesting. What it can do for a client today is more limited than the marketing suggests.

Nutrigenomics Course in India: What It Can and Cannot Teach

Nutrigenomics studies how our genes affect our response to food, and how food affects the way genes are expressed. It is a real and active field of research, and it has captured the public imagination: people send saliva samples to companies and receive reports telling them which foods suit their DNA. Many nutritionists now feel pressure to understand these reports, and courses have appeared to meet that demand.

This guide explains what nutrigenomics can honestly offer, what the evidence shows about gene-based diets, and what a good course should teach. It is written by NNWA's clinical faculty. NNWA runs a precision and personalised nutrition course, and the limits below apply to it as much as to anyone's.

What is nutrigenomics?

It is the study of the interaction between genes and nutrition. Some people carry gene variants that change how they process certain nutrients: lactose, caffeine, folate or saturated fat, for example. In a few rare conditions, such as phenylketonuria, a single gene determines a strict lifelong diet. For most people, though, diet responses are shaped by many genes with small effects, along with gut bacteria, sleep, activity, age, weight and lifestyle. That complexity is why turning a DNA test into a reliable diet plan is much harder than it sounds.

Do gene-based diets work better than general advice?

For most people, current trials suggest not. The DIETFITS trial, published in JAMA in 2018, randomised over six hundred adults to a healthy low-fat or healthy low-carbohydrate diet and found no meaningful link between a genetic pattern thought to predict response and how much weight people lost. The European Food4Me study found that personalised dietary advice improved diets more than generic advice, but adding genetic information did not make the advice more effective. Personalisation helps; personalisation by DNA has not yet been shown to add much for the general population.

What does personalised nutrition get right?

The idea that people respond differently to the same food is well supported. Research using continuous glucose monitors, such as the PREDICT studies, has shown large differences between individuals in blood sugar and fat responses to identical meals. That supports tailoring advice to the person, using their history, measurements, preferences, lifestyle and response to changes. Much of this can be done without a genetic test, through careful assessment and follow-up.

What should a nutrigenomics course teach?

The basics of genetics and nutrigenomics, how to interpret personal health data, how individuals vary in their response to food, how to build personalised plans, the role of the gut microbiome, and, crucially, the evidence and its limits. NNWA's Precision and Personalised Nutrition course covers these areas over six weeks at an advanced level, costing 14,999 rupees reduced from 21,999, with EMI from 1,250 rupees a month. It carries NNWA certificates.

How should you handle a client's DNA diet report?

Respectfully and critically. Clients often arrive having paid for a test and trusting its recommendations. Explain what the report can and cannot tell them, point out where its advice matches good general nutrition, which is common, and gently question recommendations that lack evidence or would make their diet unnecessarily restrictive. Avoid dismissing the client's interest; use it to start a conversation about what actually predicts their health, such as weight, activity, blood tests and family history.

When a client arrives holding a DNA report

They have usually paid for it and they trust it. This order keeps their trust without endorsing what the report cannot support.

  1. Read it with them rather than dismissing it

    The curiosity that made them buy the test is the curiosity you want to keep hold of.

  2. Say what it can and cannot tell them

    Be plain about which recommendations rest on decent evidence and which rest on very little.

  3. Point out where it agrees with ordinary good advice

    This happens often, and it lets you endorse most of the document honestly.

  4. Question anything needlessly restrictive

    A recommendation that narrows their diet for no good reason is worth pushing back on, gently and with a reason given.

  5. Move on to what does predict health

    Weight, activity, blood tests and family history, and a plan built from those rather than from the report.

Are direct-to-consumer genetic tests regulated in India?

Regulation of consumer genetic testing in India is still developing, and the quality of tests and reports varies widely. Some reports rest on a small number of gene variants with weak evidence behind their dietary recommendations. A nutritionist should not treat a consumer report as a clinical test, and should never use it to advise on medical conditions. Clinically important genetic questions, such as inherited high cholesterol or genetic disease risk, belong to doctors and genetic counsellors.

Who should take a nutrigenomics course?

Practising nutritionists and dietitians who meet clients with DNA reports, want to understand the science, and want to personalise their work more precisely. It is an advanced specialism and assumes a solid foundation in nutrition. If you are new to the field, start with a foundation qualification such as NNWA's six-month Diploma. A nutrigenomics course without that base can leave you knowing about gene variants but unsure how to plan a balanced meal.

What are the red flags in nutrigenomics courses?

Claims that genetic testing is essential for good nutrition advice. Courses tied to a particular testing company whose tests you are expected to sell. Promises that gene-based diets cure or prevent disease. Little or no discussion of the trial evidence. And certificates that suggest you can interpret clinical genetic results. A course that spends time on what the science does not yet support is far more trustworthy than one that treats the field as settled.

Can nutrigenomics be sold ethically?

It can, if you are honest with clients. Some practitioners offer genetic testing as one part of a personalised service, making clear what it can and cannot tell them, and not charging more for recommendations the test cannot support. Others choose not to use tests at all and personalise through assessment and monitoring. Either approach is defensible. Presenting a test as a scientific key to the perfect diet is not.

Which personal data is genuinely useful?

Standard measurements and tests that a doctor or client already has: weight and waist, blood pressure, fasting glucose and HbA1c, lipid profile, vitamin D and B12 levels, and records of what the client eats and how they feel. Continuous glucose monitoring can be illuminating for some clients, particularly those with prediabetes or diabetes, when interpreted carefully. These tell you far more about a client's current health than most consumer genetic reports.

How does the gut microbiome fit in?

The microbiome is another source of individual variation, and research on it is growing fast. It influences how people digest fibre, how they respond to some foods, and possibly metabolic health. Consumer microbiome tests, however, face similar limits to genetic ones: the science of turning a stool report into specific diet advice is still early. How is precision nutrition different from functional nutrition?

They overlap. Precision nutrition focuses on tailoring advice to individual data, including genetics, biomarkers and responses. Functional nutrition focuses on root causes and whole-body systems. What should you ask before paying?

Which genetic variants does the course cover, and what is the evidence for each dietary recommendation? Does it discuss trials such as DIETFITS and Food4Me? Is it linked to any testing company? Does it teach when to refer to doctors or genetic counsellors? Who teaches it, and what are their qualifications in genetics or clinical nutrition? The answers will quickly reveal whether a course teaches science or sells tests.

What will the field look like in ten years?

Probably more useful than today, as research links more genetic, metabolic and microbiome data to real outcomes. Learning the foundations now positions you to use better tools when they arrive. The practitioners who will do best are those who understand both the promise and the current limits, and who can explain the difference clearly to clients.

The honest summary

Nutrigenomics is a real and promising science, and personalised nutrition is well supported. For most people, current trials do not show that DNA-based diets outperform careful general and personalised advice. A course is worth taking if it teaches the science honestly, helps you handle clients' reports critically, and personalises through data that genuinely predicts health.
