This article shows how to read a protein bar label line by line, what the FSSAI details on the pack tell you, and when a cheaper, everyday Indian snack does the same job. It does not rank brands; the label in your hand matters more than any list.
Are protein bars actually healthy?
Some are, and many are not. A bar earns its place when it gives a meaningful dose of protein, say 10 to 20 g, without arriving with a heavy load of added sugar, refined fat and calories you did not plan for. A bar with 6 g of protein and 20 g of sugar can sit on the same shelf as one with 20 g of protein and 2 g of sugar, and both wrappers will look equally athletic.
How much protein should a good protein bar have?
Most bars sold in India carry between 10 and 20 g of protein each, and 15 g or more is a reasonable bar to clear if protein is the reason you are buying it. Check whether that figure is per bar or per 100 g, because the front of the pack tends to quote whichever sounds bigger. Then set it against the calories. A bar giving 20 g of protein in 220 kcal is doing a different job from one giving 10 g in the same calories. For scale, one boiled egg gives about 6 g.
How many calories are in a protein bar?
Most protein bars fall between about 180 and 250 kcal, and some larger ones go past 300. That is the size of a small meal, not a light snack. The calories come mainly from nuts, added fats, sugar or syrups, and the protein itself at 4 kcal per gram. If you are trying to lose weight, a bar that replaces a samosa helps. A bar eaten alongside the samosa does not.
What about sugar and sugar alcohols like maltitol?
Look at two lines: sugars, with added sugars if they are declared separately, and polyols or sugar alcohols. Many bars cut sugar by using sugar alcohols such as maltitol, sorbitol or erythritol, which sweeten with fewer calories. They are not a free pass. Maltitol in particular is poorly absorbed, so much of it reaches the large intestine and ferments, which is why a bar or two can cause gas, bloating or loose stools. It also raises blood sugar more than most other polyols. Erythritol is usually better tolerated. If a pack warns that polyols may have a laxative effect, take it at its word.
Why do protein bars have so much fibre?
Much of it comes from added chicory root fibre, listed as inulin or fructo-oligosaccharides. It lifts the fibre figure and feeds gut bacteria. The catch is that it ferments quickly. People with a sensitive gut or irritable bowel syndrome often find that a large dose of chicory fibre in one sitting leads to wind and cramps. Fibre from oats, nuts and seeds tends to be gentler. A high fibre number is only good news if it comes from ingredients your gut is used to.
Which protein source in a bar is best?
Whey, milk protein and soy protein isolate are complete proteins, meaning they supply all nine essential amino acids in useful proportions, and they are the most common. Soy crisps, the crunchy puffs in many bars, are extruded soy protein and count towards the total. Collagen is the one to watch. It is cheap, it binds bars well and it pushes the protein number up, but it is an incomplete protein that lacks tryptophan and is low in leucine, the amino acid most linked with muscle building. Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, so the first protein named is the main one.
What fat is used in protein bars?
The fat usually comes from nuts, peanut butter, seeds, cocoa butter or added vegetable oils such as palm oil. Palm oil and hydrogenated fats bring mostly saturated fat, and chocolate coatings add more. A bar with 5 to 6 g of saturated fat has used about a quarter of a sensible daily limit on a 2,000 kcal diet in one wrapper. The ingredient list tells you which fat you are getting; the nutrition panel tells you how much of it is saturated.
What serving size tricks should you watch for?
The most common is a nutrition panel quoted per 100 g beside a bar that weighs 40 or 60 g, which makes the protein look larger than what you actually eat. The reverse also happens: sugar and fat quoted per serving, where one serving turns out to be half a bar that nobody eats in halves. Always convert to the whole bar in your hand. If the front says 20 g protein, check whether the back agrees for a single bar, and at what weight.

Set the protein against the calories
Around 15 g is a fair bar to clear, and most sit between 180 and 250 kcal, which is the size of a small meal rather than a light snack.

Added sugars where they are declared separately, and sugar alcohols such as maltitol, sorbitol or erythritol, which are not a free pass.
Find the first protein named
The ingredient list runs in descending order by weight. Collagen high on that list is a reason to put the bar back on the shelf.
Look at the saturated fat
A bar carrying 5 to 6 g has used about a quarter of a sensible daily limit on a 2,000 kcal diet, before the rest of the day starts.
Check the category and the licence
The pack says whether it is ordinary food or a health supplement, and carries an FSSAI number you can look up on the FoSCoS portal.
What does the FSSAI licence number on the pack tell you?
It tells you the product was made or marketed by a business registered with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, and it lets you trace who is responsible for it. Packaged food must carry the FSSAI logo and a 14-digit licence or registration number. You can check that number on FSSAI's FoSCoS portal, which is worth doing for bars bought online from sellers you do not recognise. A licence is legal permission to operate a food business. It is not a stamp saying the bar is healthy or that its claims have been checked.
Is a protein bar a health supplement or a normal food?
It can be either, and the label will say which. Some bars are sold as ordinary packaged food under FSSAI's general standards. Others are licensed under the regulations for health supplements and nutraceuticals, and those packs must name the category, for example 'Health Supplement', and carry the words 'Not for medicinal use'. The category matters because supplements come with a recommended daily usage and sometimes added vitamins, minerals or botanicals. If a bar is labelled as a supplement, read the usage advice, and do not stack two or three a day on top of a protein powder.
When is a protein bar actually useful?
A bar makes sense when real food is hard to reach. Long train or road journeys, back-to-back meetings that swallow lunch, a hospital shift, or the hour after training when the next meal is still far off are fair uses. Bars keep for months, need no refrigeration and survive the bottom of a bag. The problem is rarely the bar itself. It is the habit of treating a packaged product as the default snack when cheaper food is sitting at home.
What can you eat instead of a protein bar?
On most days an everyday snack does the job for less money. A 30 g handful of roasted chana gives about 6 to 7 g of protein. A 200 g bowl of curd gives about 6 g, and hung curd more. A boiled egg gives about 6 g, a 30 g handful of peanuts about 7 g, and a bowl of roasted makhana is a light, crunchy option with some protein and very little fat. Who should be careful with protein bars?
People with diabetes should treat a bar as a carbohydrate food until the label proves otherwise, because syrups, dates and maltitol all raise blood glucose to some degree. Anyone with chronic kidney disease has a protein limit set by their nephrologist and should ask before adding bars. Children do not need them, since ordinary meals cover a child's protein needs. If a bar is sold as a supplement with added vitamins or herbs and you are pregnant or on regular medicines, ask your doctor before making it a habit.

The short answer
A protein bar is healthy when the label shows 15 g or so of complete protein, modest sugar, a fibre source your gut tolerates, sensible fat and calories you have planned for. Plenty of bars fail that test while looking the part. Use them for travel, long days and post-training gaps, and let curd, chana, eggs, nuts and fruit carry the everyday snacking.
