02The difference

How the two courses really differ

Weight Management & Obesity Care is about coaching a client towards a healthy weight through food, habits and activity. Its starting point is why weight changes at all: calories, activity and metabolism. From there it shows how to set up eating a client can live with, free of the restriction that leads to rebound, and how to coach appetite, cravings and staying the course. It adds movement and strength work, and what to do when progress stalls. It is a beginner course, asks for no particular background, and deliberately stays away from fad diets and quick fixes.

Bariatric & Post-Surgery Nutrition begins where an operation enters the picture. It describes the common procedures and how each changes digestion, the nutrition goals and liver-shrinking phase beforehand, and the staged return from liquids to purees to solid food afterwards. It then deals with the high protein needs and deficiency prevention that follow, and with portions and habits that protect results in the long run. The people it is written for include clinic and hospital staff involved in aftercare and people facing the operation themselves.

The limits differ too. After Weight Management & Obesity Care you coach healthy weight as education and support, and you refer anyone with clinical obesity or a related condition to a doctor or dietitian. Bariatric aftercare is clinical from start to finish: the surgical team and dietitian lead it, every surgical and medical decision is theirs, and the course prepares you to understand that pathway and contribute to it under supervision, never to run a patient's post-operative diet alone.

06In common

Where the two overlap

Both courses care about what happens after the weight comes off. Weight Management & Obesity Care has a topic on plateaus and maintenance; Bariatric & Post-Surgery Nutrition has one on portions and habits that protect long-term results. Both are also clear that some clients need a doctor or dietitian, and teach you to recognise them. That is where the shared ground ends: energy balance, behaviour change and activity belong to one course, surgical procedures, staged diets and supplementation to the other.

07Both

Taking both, and in which order

Taking both makes sense for someone who works with weight across its whole range, and the order is clear. Start with Weight Management & Obesity Care, the beginner course, for energy balance and habit coaching. Add Bariatric & Post-Surgery Nutrition when your clients include people heading for or recovering from an operation, or when you join a team that provides aftercare. If you already work in surgical aftercare, going straight to Bariatric & Post-Surgery Nutrition is reasonable.

08Verdict

The short answer

If your clients want to lose weight through eating, habits and activity, take Weight Management & Obesity Care. If they are having, or have had, weight-loss surgery, take Bariatric & Post-Surgery Nutrition and expect to work under the surgical team and dietitian. A coach with no surgical clients needs only the first.

NNWA courses are private skill courses. They prepare you to educate and support people, not to diagnose, treat or prescribe, and completing one does not confer the Registered Dietitian credential.

10Questions

Bariatric & Post-Surgery Nutrition or Weight Management & Obesity Care: common questions

Does Weight Management & Obesity Care cover weight-loss surgery?

No. Its topics are energy balance, sustainable diets, behaviour change, obesity and health risk, activity, and plateaus and maintenance. It does teach you to recognise when obesity care requires a medical or dietetic referral. The procedures and the diet stages around an operation are the subject of Bariatric & Post-Surgery Nutrition.

Which course is the easier starting point?

Weight Management & Obesity Care. It is a beginner course with no particular background required. Bariatric & Post-Surgery Nutrition is intermediate and deals with a supervised clinical pathway, so it makes more sense once you have the basics of weight and eating behaviour or already work near surgical patients.

Does either course let me work with post-surgery patients on my own?

No. Weight Management & Obesity Care does not cover them at all. Bariatric & Post-Surgery Nutrition explains the nutrition side so that you can contribute responsibly, but it states that aftercare must be led by the surgical team and a dietitian. Your role is to support that pathway, not to replace it.

I coach clients with obesity who may be offered surgery. Which should I take?

Weight Management & Obesity Care serves the coaching you do now. Bariatric & Post-Surgery Nutrition names wellness coaches whose clients are considering surgery among the people it is written for, so it is the natural second course. Whether a client has surgery is a decision for that client and their doctors.
